The socks are royalblue/lightblue herringbone which probably looks fairly solid from a few meters away. I wanted to have a darker shoe and thus went for slighty dark socks. The light blue part of the socks are similar to the shirt. A lighter shoe/soc combo might have looked better but I wanted to ground the outfit with a dark shoe.

From a design standpoint this is a superior deployment of complementary colours, in this case orange and its opposite across the colour wheel blue. Here's why:

  • Colours used sparingly, combined with neutrals.
  • Warm colour against cool.
  • The colours with the most visual weight due to luminosity and saturation are used in the smallest elements.
  • Strong element juxtaposed with pale, desaturated complement.
  • Jacket incorporates hints of warm colour from tie; necktie incorporates neutrals from jacket.
  • Neutrals that are similar in hue made visually distinct by pairing a texture/pattern against a solid (jacket / pants).

At this point it might sound like I have a man-crush on you, but I actually kind of resent you and your perfect goddamn hair.

I design stuff for a living, and even after a couple of decades there are still times when I look at something I'm working on and and think, "I know it works, but WHY does it work?" Designers, like well dressed people, eventually internalize the theory and it turns into instinct that we put in play without consciously thinking about it. It's kind of cool when theory intersects the real world in a way that you can analyze and say, "oh, THAT"S why". And we all learn from it.

So to that end I give you the intersection of tissue, texture & colour.

Yes, I like it very much. Although, truthfully, my favorite avant is probably the B5 RS4. The looks, the tunability of the platform, and the performance of that car just check all the right boxes for me.

Please bring back the all red dash, the analog clock, and the twin turbo six (in an avant, naturally). My deposit is ready.
