I specifically avoided use of any reference to ‘rules’ in my post but whatever you want to call them, certain rules/conventions/standards/cliches ... whatever, have evolved for a reason. Certain colors just don’t look good side by side, for example - Mossy green and scarlet. Lavender and scarlet. Mossy green and black.

You said ''belong'' which is as good as rules. But let's not get lost in semantics, we all know what we mean.

It's a about context. There is a time to dress conservatively and blend. Other times call for more peacock rigs with clashing ties and daring shirts. Culture too: the rules of ties for instance, are different in the UK than in the USA. What is clashes and may be eccentric in one place, may be perceived as not far from the mainstream in another.

im somewhat bashful posting in this thread because im well below most of your leagues. a lot of it's because im still a beginner, wasted a lot of money on cheap shit i dont wear and student loans, and live/work in the midwest united states, meaning simply not being a fat fuck* wearing a faded golf polo with a corporate sponsor means i stand out.

*as you'll see below tho, im well aware i have 15 lbs** to lose...on an rx that promotes weight gain, it'll come off eventually
**pounds...that's right

i lurked for a long ass time, and you guys have taught me so much about this stuff, i legit appreciate it. so this isn't showing off a great fit or any really nice pieces...more looking for feedback and advice.

shirt is cream, socks are navy. ive posted this suitsupply suit a few times. this is from a fundraiser last night that the trio i play bass in was hired to play. i was going to have an instrument strap holding a 12 lb. (USA! USA! USA!) bass up for 3+ hours and didnt want to give the jackets i wear frequently that kind of abuse. i bought it as a beater suit because the nice suit my grandfather got me for a birthday gift (local MTM made in house...dark gray, VBC) had wine spilt on it at a wedding and i spent the $300 the manager gave me on an ounce of weed and some other stuff, like an idiot.

imo, the biggest issue is the sleeves more than my belly. i needed it for a wedding and didn't have time to return it. suitsupply's online measurements sucked...im a bigger dude and i knew i was a 46L. fucking knew it. their thing said id be fine with a 46R. had my tailor take the armholes up as much as possible and lengthen the sleeves as much as she could...funny thing is, it was actually a good thing last night since the cuffs never messed with my hands.

actually kinda like wearing the suit. fabric's ok. feels nice to wear. i think it looks ok, like 6.5/10? obviously would look better if i were the 15 lbs. lighter like it's tailored for, and the sleeves weren't fucked.

question is...i wear suits probably 20x year. do i spend $1k+ on a nice MTM or get another beater suitsupply in 46L? and wait to get something bespoke when my income jumps up? i think my grandpa's suit can't be redeemed...but the tailor still has the same $700 MTM program. maybe that'd be a good stopgap?

looking to spend $600-1k. plain fabrics...navy (this gray beater suit is fine for the US)...any recommendations would be appreciated. sleeves are kind of an issue since i have pretty long arms. be as critical as you like, im looking to improve. last note...i like my igent oxblood tassel loafers and they're so damn comfy.

What you are wearing looks fine. Could just get another one of those in blue and wait until you have some cash to get something really nice if that’s what you want.

tl;dr

was this a clever ghost post or should you register at sf and engage with the academics there?

Not sure what the space race has in all of this....

But the answer should come from this: is your 20 times a year you're wearing a suit meaningful in terms of status, searching for a partner, or is it just another gig? As you know, up on stage, from a distant, under stage lights, actually lots of flaws are hidden and you can get away with average stuff.

As has already been said, if you're on a budget, thrift and then get alterations locally. Go a size up then you have something to play with.

As a student, buy classic stuff, play it safe and thrift like a professional. But probably not online as the failure rate might be too high risk as regards budget.

those 20ish times...half work, a quarter for weddings/funerals, a quarter for going into the hood to take pictures in front of graffiti.

I'm desperately looking for red houndstooth shirting both in flannel and in linen or cotton linen mix. My favorite pattern ever.

I didn't know about the vestiaire du renard site. They had a tweed jacket in my size. Of course it's not there anymore.
