In China there is not much status, in using a local tailor. Try watching "Red Obsession" for insights, into how western luxury goods are perceived there.

I don't have to watch it to know. I see the Chinese folks covered in brand name but still look crap. If it has the name and is expensive, them people are wearing it. They do not understand that when you buy something, you better look damn good especially if you're paying $500 for a T-shirt or $5,000 for a purse.

I just find YOU disagreeable but this looks nice. I get that it's your hobby but you're just a gov't employee (last time I checked) and not some executive so why do you overdress for work...and do you even get to work on time with all these photo shoots?

Indeed, there are what appears to be good tailors in both Shanghai and Beijing, but as one of my Chinese based colleagues informed me, they would rather pay top, top dollar for brand names imported at huge expense. That's where the status is in Chinese culture. Bling with added zest.

Do they not have good tailors in China? Don't they have like 2 billion people???
Ugh...maybe over priced brand name suits that have skinny lapels and tight all around and are made by Chinese people in Italy is just what they need. How ironic.

I have travelled to both Beijing and Shanghai and what I saw were several tailors that looked pretty good from the outside. I never had time in the day to visit and why would I, when bespoke adventures there are likely to be very costly indeed.

Anyway, it's a cultural bling thing related to new money. You know how it works. Bespoke tailoring is not for everyone anyway, including rich people.

Bespoke tailoring used to be reserved to people who actually cared about the trade and their appearance. Nowdays new money have joined the bandwagon pretending to have taste and manners.

I shudder when I see the price tags on Zegna, Isaia, Kiton, Brioni, and Tom Ford suits. That's when I proceed to Suit Supply and get a nice fitting jacket. Their trousers have been a failure thus far so I just go with Rota.

Isn't rota like $400 for RTW? Overpriced.

Only if you're dumb enough to pay MSRP! I paid $175 for the ones that I have and I only have like 4. I also do Kent Wang and Epaulet. If you still think they're over-priced, then do give me recommendations.

You can get most of these brands on eBay at a fraction of their retail price, if RTW is what you are after and if you have a good sense of your sizes or, better yet, your measurements. And by a fraction, I mean 10% or less. Perhaps more like %25 for "new with tags" items from the recent seasons.

Been there and done that. I've tried the Zegna and Isaia suits and they're just not it for me. The Suit Supply's Havana line fits me superbly and I will stick with Suit Supply for now. I've gotten rid of all my Zegna, Isaia, and RLBL suits and was able to recover some funds. At least the bleeding has stopped now that I won't be buying those brands.
