Briefcases, bags and luggage

Is Briggs & Riley still the gold standard?
Was it ever? I mean I have a few and I suppose it is quite robust and nice but I find it quite heavy. You have to sacrifice extra kilos to the luggage allowance before you start packing.

I thought it was for the durable/quality vs. cost segment. It was never top of the line for sure, but once Tumi went to shit and Rimowa got bought out, I thought Briggs basically was the only quality maker left that wasn’t exorbitant.

I have a Rimowa polycarb. The price have doubled, since i got it.
Today, I'd get either a Samsonite or perhaps FPM Milano if I was in a spending mood.

Can someone explain Rimowa to me? Who buys it? What is so special about it besides aluminum?

For some people the look of their battered and beaten up aluminum Rimowas is part of the appeal.

This. I have an old Rimowa that was a special edition, all matte black. I wouldn't buy at their current prices though.

It is, or was, certainly well built though.

I'm not sure Briggs all that good anymore, but couldn't say for sure. And them and Tumi have always been ugly in that middle manager traveling dude kind of way. I'd probably get a Patagonia or Tom Bihn if I was buying. Arcteryx was good but I don't know since they were bought out if that is still the case.

I can't give my opinion on the "skin" or on the zippers. But I can do it over those Zamak carabiners that will break sooner rather than later.

Still 100% Red Oxx, they are indestructible and incredibly spacious. But I'd never get something on wheels anyway (for me that is, family uses some cheap Samsonite). Tom Bihn is also nice but I've never bothered because Red Oxx is perfect.

are they still doing the 100% 1-bag lifestyle thing? quality held up after all these years?
They have massively expanded their product range, but they still don't have anything with wheels. My first bag is more than 10 years old, has been heavily used (hundreds of flights, stuffed to the max, etc) and is basically new. No wear and tear whatsoever.

As long as you don't give a shit what it looks like, or care about 10lb buckles that resemble crane tackle

Yes I don't care too much, at least not enough to compromise on specs. I do have a nice looking canvas duffel from earlier times, but I hardly ever use it
