Coffee Nerds Unite

This machine is dead - like all the others, it’s the scanner that reads the little bar code on the pod that seems to be dead.

I’m drinking cold brew until I find time to replace this piece of junk.
the virtuo machines suck. if you still want nespresso get an original machine. but for the amount of shots you're drinking you should definitely spring for a high end espresso machine if you want that. otherwise, just move to brewed coffee.

I’ll buy some more pods for the og machine while I wait for Nespresso to replace this pos. Pretty sure that’s what they will do again, though at this point I’d rather just get a refund.

Tell them that. Or ask for a different machine

Anything you’d recommend if they offer a different machine?

This is what we have now:

I guess I could also accept refund payment in pods for the little machine.

the delonghi is an original machine. that doesn't work either?

The white one? It’s a fucking terminator that can’t be killed. But loading that like a GPMG to run 9 pods in the morning was a bit much, so I passed that on to Mrs DB.

That’s an OG machine. They generally last a while. But 9 caps is more a restaurant grade machine. Also 9 shots is nuts.

For all you coffee heads (I can't stand the stuff but nevermind):

The Italians also drink a glass of water with their coffee.

I've reduced my coffee intake drastically over the years. Times I could drink 6-10 cups a day, I got that habit back in the 90s.

Now I'll take 2-3 a day, at the height of the lock downs, I had it down to 1. If you drink 2 early in the morning, quite close, you'll get tired early afternoon and you'll need another one to perk you up.

Nespresso discontinued the Alto XL pods so I’m back in the market for a new caffeine source. I’ll be making cold brews until I decide what machine to buy.

Honestly, I’m not even sure what I’m looking for now. Previously, I would have said something fast with easy prep and clean-up that delivers 2-3 mugs of decent coffee to gulp down before I head out in the morning. Also, compact enough to fit into this kitchen nook:

However, I started cutting back my coffee (to two Alto pods in the AM) recently, so maybe this is an opportunity to drink less and better coffee.

No idea on budget, really. Maybe $500ish?

I’m in love with my Breville. I think the Duo retails for less than 500.

why not just use the regular nespresso pods?

short of that I can recommend a grinder and a coffee maker for $500. but it seems stupid since you already have all the nespresso stuff.

When I was using the small Nespresso machine, I was going through 6-8 pods a day, which adds up.

Maybe I can try to use it now and cut down some more.

Just bought a Virtuo, I hadn't read your post before. It's getting delivered tomorrow, Thursday.

We've got the normal Nespresso and the high-end coffee grinding machines, but the only one that's used now is the Nespresso. Generally, not with Nespresso capsules. It's over 6 years old and ready for replacement, you can feel it wearing out.

My coffee intake is slowly creeping up, but still not over doing it. 2 with breakfast, one at 11 and then another between 1 - 3pm, then I'm done for the day.

The Virtuo machine arrived late afternoon. Just had one cup of the Fortado, quite strong and only 8 on the Nespresso scale of intensity.

Missus is not too happy, noting Nespresso is locking us into their new system.

But I like long coffees in the morning, none of this espresso or ristretto malarkey for me.

The Virtuo coffee is good though I’m still pissed they discontinued the big size. The machine is very breakdown prone but they will replace them (I’m on my third replacement in 3 years) without much fuss.

glad she's a communist at heart.

original > virtuo

Just finished two after dinner ones - the Peru and Ethiopian - with Delamain Vesper cognac chasers. I can see why John Entwistle of The Who liked such a combination:

This is a very pro-Ukrainian, anti-Russian and Putin household. This is going to be hot bed of pre-invasion talk tomorrow. It will be pretty intense. Hopefully, I can turn on Jools' Annual Hootenanny at the appropriate time. Had some hope it would be cancelled, but alas, no.

Better made machine, but the little capsules won’t give a true caffeine junky their fix without reloading that sucker like an FN249 machine gun.
You need something pitched at the right level to give you that hit. Which I've got now. I'm buzzing.

If you can still get hold of the Alto Intenso pods over there, stock up as they are now discontinued.

For what you spend in pods, the breville or a comparable machine is probably the way to go (better quality coffe too). Lately I have been using Danesi and Passalaqua for beans

You can still get them here, but they're for making a 414ml drink.

You're probably right, but sometimes it's good to just throw the capsule in and away you go. So far, the Vertuo coffee is proving exceptional. Just tried the Forest Black and that's as good a coffee I've ever had. The rich bean taste just stays in the mouth like an exceptional whisky.

But you can program the machine to make them any size. My standard was an Alto pod in a 300ml mug.

There was an interesting review, earlier in this thread, of the technology behind the Vertuo. Worth watching.

I just ordered some of their pour-over pods. Strong, 600ml brew in a $1.60 pod. Edit:!order didn’t go through. They don’t count these sleeves in the free shipping deal so nixed that.

Wondered who had been on all the antacids and then I notice the last two days the Nespresso machine has been full with empty capsules and the stock was well diminished. Well, the missus has been drinking six of the 230ml varieties between 9am and 3pm the last 2 days. I can manage about 3 in my reformed moderate coffee drinking ways, but six is over doing it. That's a ticket to irritable bowel, the shakes and paranoia.

I’m back on the pods. It’s not the best coffee, but it’s fast and convenient and the deals for home delivery are good.

That Nespresso Vertuo is costing me dear, especially as the eldest has got into the Barrista caramel malarkey.

As I buy through the Nespresso website, it's easy to see how much I'm spending, the last couple of months - coffee bill = €200+. Approx 10 capsules a day. My contribition to that is between 1-3 max. Generally, 1 or 2.

My Baratza Sette grinder decided to die after nearly 2 years of loyal service to the family.
Please understand that this is nothing short of a national tragedy - this family runs on morning coffee. This is the kind of butterfly-effect initial action which could lead to a World War.

Luckily, the “nearly 2 years” was not a factor to be ignored - the little machine sent to us by a more advanced alien species has full 2-year warranty, so we are patiently waiting for the replacement to arrive from Germany of all places.

Now if the thing can make it through post-Brexit customs in a sensible timeframe, we will go back to behaving like normal caffeinated humans in no time.

Dear God, man. Tell me you have an EU stop-gap bail-out rescue plan I’m place to keep an emergency source of caffeine flowing while traditional production lines are interrupted!

My go-to when the Nespresso (frequently) breaks down is to make cold brew.
