Disagreeable Menswear Post Of The Day

While I have never wanted to be a blogger and am in a career where there is not a single thing I’d rather be doing, there is a part of me which is envious of his set-up.

Crompton is set up for life, so we should all be envious, unless we're making more money, in which case we can be dismissive.

But Crompton should be ashamed to call himself an Englishman. British journalism - and reviewers are a kind of journalist - prides itself on being biased. In the words of The Spectator: Firm but unfair. Since the clothes being reviewed are worn by the reviewer, and we all have different bodies, then by its very nature, a sartorial review is biased. Then we all have different biases in taste and style, and the image we try to project etc. The only bit which can be said to be objective is a review of the workmanship - the actual stitching and materials. That's just about it.

Or, to put it briefly, unbiased reviews my prominent arse.

Are you sure? Did he inherit some money or a stately pad?

It's a busy hustle and he is well at it.

But Crompton should be ashamed to call himself an Englishman.

The Italians like nothing better to get an Englishman on board. It gives a good air of respectability. He's owned. You'll notice his interest in English tailoring wained some time ago.

He's chasing the money. Guess it comes with the territory....always be closing...

But such an arrangement exposes you to be less critical of inferior stuff. You're getting it for free and your role is to give positive and enthusiastic ad copy for your sponsors. Exposing you to accusations of being a mere hack.

but...

yea but...you get free stuff.

But mostly, he gets paid to write and think about clothing.

Given a certain income level, money isn’t necessarily something everyone will envy. Of course, below that level of comfort, it probably is.

I read some research on amazon reviews. Reviewers who indicated they had received the product for free or with a discount were significantly more positive than reviewers who had to pay full price. So, it’s impossible for anyone who gets something for free to be unbiased about that product, no matter what they say. So, a reviewer should either pay full price for a product or return it after the review.

But by whom?

How is Crompton set for life?

His wife? I must say I am intrigued.

Yes, with books and watches and things....But bespoke clothing?

How did people choose their tailor in the days before sartorial reviews?

Full disclosure here: the only reason I read sartorial reviews is to find out the price, which is usually never provided on the tailors' websites. Then I might look at comments on the quality, but let's face it, once you've been in business for twenty or fifty or a hundred years, and are doing well, then quality is pretty much a given.

What the fuck is a 24kt facial? Looks like gold face paint.

It was all the rage in Korea. It doesn’t do anything special for your skin, but it’s more expensive so girls like it for Instagram pics or to give as gifts.

By proximity. You wouldn't travel to Naples if you lived in the Home Counties to visit your tailor in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.

Quality may be a given, but the issue of style and taste come into play.

The concept is the same. The fact that he didn’t pay for it means his “objective” bespoke reviews are biased.

The get out clause: I'm doing it to promote the craft of bespoke tailoring, so if I get something really bad, I would likely not run an article on it, or give them an opportunity to rectify it. And fair enough, but the issue of freebies is that you cannot truly be sure that it is actually paid for ad content. You wouldn't give a blogger or journalist a bespoke suit or jacket for free and not expect a positive review. Some might even insist on a contract with clauses ensuring any negative blog content or such like will result in penalties.

Of course you can easily judge a lot by the results of the photographs. Albeit taken in ideal circumstances with a professional photographer. So what also is creeping in, is that there is modelling going on along with the journalism/blogging.

Why do you think Polack Blue Loafers is trying to emulate him.

The Blue Loafers bloke will find it a lot harder than Crompton. He hasn't the network. Crompton went to Oxford and graduated in PPE, Blue Loafers went to Cracow and is an engineer.

The curse of the dreaded PPE! So bad, it's equivalent to earning a Third without Honours from a grey brick poly.

So Crompton must know these guys:

Like the above duffers!

Ever had any dealings with the Oxbridge crowd? A closed circle, if ever there was one. They all know each other. Crompton is - how shall I put this? - the Illuminati of sartorialism.

Never come across any Cambridge chaps, but Oxford a number of times in work. The only problem I've noted is that some of them struggle when dealing with the blue collar shop floor types, which is understandable. Hence they need someone like me to translate for them!

Crompton is starting to get some flak over his ridiculous claims that such and such Italian tailor is the best in the galaxy, and his extraordinary justification of exorbitant prices. There comes a point when the internet starts to fight back. Good.

where would we find said pushback?

Miroslav Dembech as much as you may want it, falls into the mid-range, but overpriced quality. A canny buy. And I know diplomats who sport Dembech before other tailors. It says you have already been bought.

So away with your pretence and BS.

Favourite of canny-buy tie provider Johnny Cacarutti!
