It's really funny how we believe in the Blank Slate not because it bears any semblance to reality or has any logic behind it, but because it helps preserve a civil society. With apologies to Jared Diamond, the child-like notion that humans, in contrast to every other species of animal, don't evolve cognitively and behaviorally in response to their environment is asinine.

Ten generations ago, aborigines were living in a hunter-gatherer society without the wheel, agriculture, or writing, and marked by near-constant interclan warfare. And their population selected for traits successful in that environment for the previous ~200,000 generations. A surprising amount of change can happen in ten generations, but not that much change.

As an aside, the whole race thing really interests and amuses me. We always seem to be really self-conscious about Euro-superiority. And unwilling to address the fact that many non-Euros seem ill-adapted to Western Culture. It would be as if I invented a board game and then was surprised and ashamed that I beat every person who just started playing.

And "Euro-superiority" itself is a little comical. The only areas that Euros would seem to be cognitively superior in is innovation/risk tolerance (and only since the stagnation of the Islamic and Chinese worlds). It would be like declaring coyotes the most successful member of Order Carnivora because they have adapted to urban life. Biologically speaking, most species deemed successful are the most populous. In terms of population, Euros are nowhere near the most populous, the Han Chinese are. And our numbers are shrinking. And another measure of success, biologically, would be genetic diversity. Which subsaharan Africans win hands-down.

When you see the extreme behavior on display in this thread, it does provide some valuable social insight. In part, it's why I started it.

There is a big discrepancy between how the different races and socioeconomic classes fight. The one thing that is most obvious to me is that the poorer you are, the more vicious you fight. The other telling factor is similar to what you also pointed out in the other post, the way the people around the fight behave is also very different the poorer you are. It's disconcerting to see that guy being told to get up simply because the onlookers wanted to see him "asleep" as they put it. Any compassionate person would have intervened or held the guy on the ground.

There is a video on this thread of an incredible fight over a pair of shoes. The guy could have easily died from some of those punches. When society teaches you that you have nothing to lose, you behave that way.

Biologically speaking, there are probably some minor differences between different geographic localizations of humans. It would have become much more pronounced with more generations but we've mixed pretty successfully and it will only increase into homogenization. What won't change is being a product of your environment.

It's like the whole "black people talk too much in movies" trope. Of course they do. They do the same thing in church for that matter. To many black folks, the idea of just sitting there in silence and listening as a speaker drones on is absurd.

The notion of a group of people sitting passively and just listening to a central authority figure is uniquely Asian and Western. Asian because of an incredible complex bureaucracy in place for millennia that encouraged collectivism and obedience to a central authority. Five hundred years ago Westerners sat in Catholic Churches and passively listened to a central figure with allegedly divine authority. During the same timeframe, most African tribes, especially those in West Africa, had participative religions where divine authority was available to all and circle dances were common. More interactive gatherings were the norm.

I think when it's all said and done, it's going to be scary to find out how many behaviors have a genetic origin. My brother and I, who look almost exactly the same but were raised in separate households, always creep each other's wives out with how similar are gestures, word phrasing, and behaviors are.

Anyway, back to watching poor people beating each other up. Which totes shows we're better than they are.

Any beginning geneticist can tell you which continent a majority of a person's ancestors came from (which generally corresponds to race). Hell, most dentists can, just based on the shape of the teeth. There is no "probably" about it. Saying "race is a social construct" is like saying "the Y chromosome is a social construct".

And it's crazy how fast the differences develop. Lactose tolerance in Northern Euros is, by most estimates, only around 3,000 years old. Same with Tibetans' various genetic adaptations to the high altitude. The prevalence of the gene that causes sickle cell anemia (and malarial resistance) is already decreasing among black Americans, because it's no longer enough of a positive survival characteristic to outweigh its negative manifestations.

I wonder if the guy who had his fingers smashed died afterwards. He was bleeding from blunt head trauma and his spine took a couple of bad brick hits.
