Home Improvement & Repair

this is a good thread

Detest spending any money on home improvements.

Most people look at their new fences, or double glazing and think: that looks good! I just shudder at the wasted money that could have been saved had that said piece of infrastructure been built to last four or five hundred years.

Saved for what?

As a 240v Australian, I’ve always had a healthy fear/ignorance of home electrics.

I have a garage fluorescent light that dies on my. I’ve replaced the tube, checked the circuit breaker and GFC, and confirmed that another light on the same circuit is still working. Is there anything else I can do before calling a sparky?

Get a voltage tester and test the fixture

Fixture should be pretty easy to replace as well can walK you though that if you need it.

I get what your saying and it’s probably a tool I should own and know how to use … but I could also just jump right in there and replace the fixture for the same cost:

yes you could but you were asking about testing so i gave that. recommend getting one anyway for the tool box. basic fixture replacement is easy peazy.

So when I mentioned I was replacing the light fixture, Mrs DB thought it a good opportunity to upgrade. I guess we are getting some ambient mood lighting in the garage now 🤷‍♂️

Or maybe she’s still made I put psychedelic disco lights in the living room ;)

Does any one have experience on salt water pool maintenance? Also how difficult it is to raise bathroom sinks/cabinetry?

Also washer/dryer combo recommendation? SO wants a smart fridge, I want not to spend 4k.....
Hello, I am your man in panama.

Do not, under any circumstance, but a smart fridge. Do not, under any circumstance, buy a Samsung or LG appliance.

For washer dryer the one and only choice is Speed Queen. Ive had mine for three years now and not a single problem. After having a piece of shit LG with 7 repairs on it, it’s been a god send.

Let me know the budget for the fridge.

What's wrong with Samsung or LG??? GE or Whirlpool good?

2500 for Fridge. I want one of them french door ones.

major problems, god awful customer service, impossible to repair. takes weeks and weeks on end to get parts and then they don't have local technicians that can handle the jobs. i'd rather die than go through that again. my samsung fridge just died for a third time.

GE or Whirlpool good?
best of the bunch until you go up into higher end brands like viking, etc.

i just bought this kitchen aid that costco has on sale for $1900

whatever product you buy get the extended warranty. they all fail nowadays.

these are the speed queens i bought

one of the only top load washers with an agitator that isn't a piece of shit. whatever you do, if you do buy a top load, do not buy one without an agitator. it doesnt get the clothes clean by just swishing them up and down and all over.

Interesting... I have never heard of Speed Queen before, seems like excellent choices. I looked up some local dealers, going to check them out.

You’ve known me for close to a decade. You know I don’t give out advice on things I haven’t done my homework on. Trust me on this there is NO better washing machine. I know it seems expensive but with the 5 year warranty and piece of mind it’s worth every penny.

Yeah not doubting you. Got that Tempurpedic.

What your thoughts on Wolf Cook tops? Hella expensive, not sure if it is worth the dough for just every day cooking.

Washer/Dryer/Fridge must, but the previous owner is leaving other stuff. They all seem to be in good working condition, so I don't plan to drop grands on replacing them since dough is needed in other things.

curious because we have a friend who has a wolf cook top and swears it will be the best upgrade to get until I saw how much it costs....

well if you get a cook top you need a separate oven so that also ups the cost. if you don't do a ton of cooking you can probably do without. induction is cool though.

did you get in on that kitchen aid costco french door fridge?

No personal experience I’ve heard they’re good. Are you doing all the kitchen appliances?
Wolf is nice gear. Had a range with 1.5 stoves that we left when we moved to close the deal. Excellent cooktop with all kinds of options.

Sub-Zero for refrigerators. Had one of these that stayed with the Wolf.

Heartland used to make nice ones but they went tits up in 2019. We have 2 side by each bottom freezers and they are 10 years old for sure.

of course they're nice but they're a fucking fortune here. i don't think pauly's into that kind of outlay on the kitchen. frankly, i didn't know you had hit the lotto either.

Ya'll too riches for me...........

Before we move into this crib, I am already seeing a good 10k into upgrades and fixes. The builder planted some oak trees on the sidewalk that need to be taken out and the pool needs work plus wiring the place. Stressed out already. lol

let me give you some advice now - whatever you think the cost will be, go ahead and double it and then understand it will take twice as long to fix as you think it will. also, find a good contractor and hang on to him for dear life. the sheer amount of scumbags and cocksuckers who will rip you off with shitty work and then never fix it in the building trades is astounding. i'm down at least $5k on projects that got fucked up somehow.

also make sure if you have a HOA that they'll allow you to take out the trees. we can't remove these god awful olive trees here that are staining the patio because "they're in the original documents".

salt water, lol
what?

Yeah we have a contractor already we know. The Trades world is a dirty world. Funny you mentioned HOA, HOA is actually encouraging the trees on side walk to be taken out since the new builds don't have those, but we have to keep 3 oak on the front yard and I hate oak trees. Better than pine but still hate them.

It's a salt water pool, I need to have the surface resealed as it has corosed already.

Start that olive oil business and be like the Godfather!

I just like the one range/one fridge close to forever kind of thing. Horses for courses. YMMV.

I KNEW IT!

Anyone has any experience with pool fence installatoin? there are holes already drilled, just need to install. Should be simply enough but not sure if there are issues i need to be watching out.
how is it going on the appliance hunt?
