Just watched the episode of ‘Ashes to Ashes’ where they go to a nightclub and Mr. Strange is performing this song. Boy George is supposed to be on the door.

At that time the legacy of The Stones and even The Beatles was in question. The New Wave/New Romantics with their electronica had brushed all that jangly and Merseybeat rock guitar aside.

There's an interview with David Sylvian were he says Japan were in the same studio as Paul McCartney recording an album and they blanked McCartney as they considered his music dreadfully old hat at the time. That would have been sometime 79-81.
