Starting a New RTW Men's Tailoring Line

Monday people here are trying to help you.
It's serious. I don't know about others but I have a lot of experience essential consulting to start ups, rescuing fuckups and winding up bankrupts. My questions aren't just something I thought up on the toilet. The answers shouldn't be vague.

Listen to this man (never thought I'd say that).

As someone who runs a business, I can assure you the risks and consequences are a lot greater than you imagine. Without serious planning and brutal honesty it can end very, very badly.

This business might very well be used to launder a bit of money his family has 'borrowed' from the Party. A lot of those schemes are happening in London right now, especially in real estate. If that's the case, it doesn't really matter how well the business performs.

If it isn't, and you're putting your own money in it, then I'd urge you to think a bit more before you start.

so the smart thing to do would be to discuss all of my finances and detail out my business plan to you guys?

No, but probably need to convince people you actually have a plan if you want people to take you somewhat seriously. Everything you have laid out so far is very naive and pie in the sky.

Alternatives:

1) Just do it and give out discounts to DW members once your business is up and running
2) Do not expect people to jizz in their pants when they read about your plans, accept their constructive criticism, implement it into your business plan, become successful and give out discounts to DW members

1. Start your MTM service now.
2. Offer regular discount to DW members and profit sharing to the management gurus, who are also your shills.
3. Accept deposit for pre-orders and early bird specials.
4. After one year tell them that you have difficulties with Sarto delivering the commissions.
5. Ask customers to contact Sarto for further action.
5. Take the money and run.

Unless like many start ups - esp in clothing - ref: Armoury - or iGent business - you have a parental unlimited cash as a foundation.

In that case all you have to do is hire PR company to invent the history and a rags to riches story for you . It used to be " I started with nothing from selling newspapers on the corner" but times and mythology have changed -

There is a cool guy whose class, manners, look, good taste, honesty, fabric expertice and overall kind can help.

He sells ties and his tailor is the best in the world. Also his sandal maker is classy.

100% satisfaction warranted.

Always delivers.

Who is this tacky Sarto? Anyone we know? Pictures please!

WM, seems like your pipe dream has attracted a lot of comments, advice and , criticisms. So please tell me which of the below, or all, is true.
1. Your business school education sucks, because you don't know how to write a business plan.
2. You are a trust fund baby blowing away your family's wealth.
3. You launder your parents' ill begotten money through a menswear set up, one suit at a time.
4. You are naive, or worse.
5. You are not a tailor, or trained as one. So tailoring is not for you.
6. You have never started a business venture, so you shouldn't.

If you can afford the failure, go for it. It'll be a learning experience and a fun one at that. And you might beat the odds; who knows?

I agree with this.

However, in order to stand a better chance of avoiding failure, I do think that you need to come up with a good business plan and really think about how you're going to attract business and get a better idea of what your business model is going to be like. Otherwise, I can just see you spending a lot of time and money to set things up, only for it to come to a sputtering halt because no-one knows about you.

What are the odds of me getting some freebie Napoli menswear should you fail in the business, WM?

Re: Better fit!

This will be your biggest challenge, especially when you have no experience in tailoring.
A friend of mine is a tailor and he was trying to help a guy with a basic pattern. That guy had no clue, didn't know the basics of construction, yet was very picky about the looks/ styling. He went through several tailors in his home country, tried several different MTM companies and still has no business up and running.

Also, from what I know or have seen, catering for the Asian market using Western/ Caucasian patterns/ sizes is most likely to fail, as the figure types are vastly different. By that I mean you'd need someone (a tailor or a clothing company) to create a line of garments to match the physical requirements of your target group. That is likely to be a time (and money) consuming process.

Some MTM suppliers offer 1 or 2 day courses for vendors to give those a rough idea what to do, but it takes time and a lot of experience to figure out what alteration is best. There is also the problem of those alterations having side effects in the sense that changing/ enhancing one aspect can worsen another.
Also, be aware that there will be alterations necessary at some point, even if it's only shortening sleeves or finishing the trouser bottoms. So you'll need a good and reliably alteration tailor.

That said, many MTM companies in Germany just use charming (mostly female) staff to assure that the suits are leaving the shop with as little alterations or complaints as possible. So you might want to put money aside for a hot assistant. Maybe LKP LKP can help out with his contacts regarding Russian escorts (or their bosses).

I think Sarto and WM would make the perfect couple, the former is knowledgeable but destitute, the latter loaded but clueless.

Destitute means poor, which usually results in man prostitution.

A Miura bull is a Spanish fighting bull bred, that would be a fantastic logo for the brand.

This is a Miura bull and some pink socks

Looks like you had a much more intense experience than I had. Was your suit that bad?

In either case, a good promotional video can do wonders. Just give the illusion that your stuff is all handmade by one person:

And always, always use superlatives:
