The First Five Thread: Starting a Wardrobe From Scratch

Between Grade A fabrics, would you go for 007 or 011?

007 is better but still not optimal

also, do you have anything heavier available?

Do not be beguiled by these false sartorial sirens; their winds will carry your hull to the shoals.
Camelhair OC is too rakish and outré for everyday in this day and age - it shows a guy is too into his clothes.

Grey herringbone / Navy is unobtrusive and more optimal.

Also, pure Camelhair is often too fragile (and expensive) a cloth for everyday wear - which is why it is often mixed with wool.

This is exactly what I'm afraid of.

After all of this wonderful advice I have decided to go with an orange casentino with wolf collar as my first overcoat

BTW, your pal Gianni can source top casentino cloth for you for cheap. He made that offer to me once. Don't use him for the wolf fur, it will probably be fur from Sarto's missing cats

If you buy from TACS (they sell to everyone) a meter will cost you €20
What was gianni's offer?

Can't beat the value proposition at this price point.
sure. one size fits all. all male members from small to big benefit from it. best bang for the buck. ps: when its worn out. still a duffle coat for the little sister is in the cards.

Darkside Darkside its been over a year since you started this. how do you think things turned out? would you have done anything differently?

This is still a good thread for beginners, and I have read through it again recently. I am not going to lie: in the past year I have been more and more interested in the SWD side of things ( Pauly Chase Pauly Chase ), and my CM purchases have dropped precipitously. My walking to and from work uniform is some form of OCBD tucked in chinos or some flannels and one of my pairs of boots; then I change into scrubs (which most people wear to work anyway). Yes, it looks good, but it no longer piques my creative interests. I almost never get the opportunity to wear ties and jackets, which is the most fun part of CM for me, so that's off the table. However, my CM wardrobe is easily large enough to accommodate any occasion.

If I could pick a minimal CM wardrobe after my experiences and knowledge now, it would probably include the following:

1 Navy worsted wool suit
1 Navy blazer
1 Brown Blazer
1 pair khaki cotton trousers
1 pair gray flannel trousers
1 light blue OCBD
1 light blue uni stripe OCBD
1 white OCBD
1 white light blue spread collar shirt
1 white spread collar shirt
1 pair brown oxfords/derbies/Chelseas
1 pair black captoe oxfords
1 brown belt
1 black belt
1 white linen square

...And a couple of ties. Sure it may be boring, but for the frequency I have to wear pure CM, it is more than enough and could make a fair amount of combinations.

Good reply Darkside Darkside - I cant abide people who wear scrubs outside theatre. Except for some rare busy people its an affectation and /or lazyness. So good work.

Good answer.

You a doctor as well?

Yes I'm a resident, like Pauly Chase.

It's definitely a combination of both. IMO it is the worst type of affectation. I see people wearing their MD IDs still around their neck or on their hip at the grocery store. I personally feel self-conscious wearing scrubs in public, and I like clothes too much to just let them sit in my closet.

I am also of the opinion that scrubs outside theatre - in general - is bad infection control.

Streetwear is much harder to to start than CM, in my opinion because of the many approaches one can take. I think for those who want to be on the conservative side, EG/Kapital/White Mountaineering are good places to start. Uniqlo is good if you want to budget.
