The knitwear thread

They are actually reasonably priced. I will pick up one at the end of the month when autumn kicks in..

I just received this mint 1950's Sulka cashmere cardigan. A great dense knit cardigan. No pilling after ~70 yrs.

Start wearing 2-3 days per week for next 5 years and see if its pilling or/and if the fibre gets stretch over time...Wearing it is the test of quality
But nice to see there are still garments that old still in great shape, no holes or anything else i presume ...so it was kept in safe place for sure

Nice one, and that reminds me, there is a nice Sulka l have been eyeing off too. But truthfully, l have other priorities at the moment, l have a bunch of shirts l need to have made before anything else. The warm weather is coming and those shirts are needed.

Sure, I'll do just that. ¡What a great idea! I will report back to you in 5 years.
Any other wardrobe recommendations, I am open for suggestions...

dont take it personally...but you never know how used garments are treated....again, wearing and test of time reveal the quality of the garment
This is what i do for the last 16 years..im into natural fabrics. I wanted just to mention that great garment you had it looks like that either by great quality over the years by using it and taking care of it...or keeping very safe. You can report me back even after you wear it 20 times and after washing it several times. Great quality remains almost intact...others comes loose, or pills, or makes little holes.I really didnt wanted to offend you in any way just telling my experience over the years.Maybe im used to say these things now, because i have friends and people that ask me about...and i always tell them, test it, wear it and after that you can buy some more based on your experience

Ballantyne v's William Lockie report - 3 or 4 years of good use

Bought new old stock 3 ply cashmere turtlenecks:
2 Ballantyne
1 Lockie
The skivvies from both looked identical. Both sold at same place.

William Lockie looks a touch tired, more pilling and a little wrinkled.
Ballantyne looks as fresh as ever, no pilling and no wrinkles at all.

To me this clearly demonstrates the difference between the two. The very top cashmere jumpers are 20% better than the respected Lockie make.

Even the Lockie l have on today....heavily worn all winter. No pilling, but looks a touch tired where-as all my Ballantynes are as fresh as the day they were made. So why the difference?

Strange to hear that 3 ply cashmere fabric wrinkles
I think you can feel the Ballantynes more dense and more weight to it? Or do you feel both have different weights?
If the WL is not brand new that could explain what you see

I have just ordered a Falcon rollneck from Stanley Biggs. Made in England with British wool...

I just got a nice partial refund. I had paid in full but had two promo codes I could have used. I realised 10 minutes after buying that I hadn't used either. Well Stanley Biggs have applied both...

It is not very pronounced, but very slight, even the Hermes scotland cashmere have it. Can't be seen when worn.

They are of similar thickness and weight.

Glad you mentioned the Eric Bompard. Saw a really nice 6 ply recently that was tempting to buy. Glad l didn't.

If you love it and fits you well...go ahead and buy it but not at their retail price...because recycled cashmere are dyed and over dyed, washed and over washed multiple times and you can see under microscope how all of those process affects the yarn/fibre compare with "virgin cashmere"
The issue i have with them is that they dont label as such, and they are sold as "cashmere" price. I hope France will adopt italians laws when it comes to garments

i saw you have xl and xxl sized from them...which one fits you better? or you go xxl for a more relaxed fit and with xl for a more trimmer fit ?
You are more a fan of John Smedley than Alan Paine ?

I haven't tried these on, but from experience XXL allows me to layer over shirts. If I wear an XL it's probably quite snug and only over a tee. I do prefer John Smedley, but I only have a few John Smedley's that are similar to Alain Paine, which is below...

Yes the V neck and rib were direct, the rib was a replacement for a model that I ordered but apparently was not in stock...

The Merino crew neck was from Moorings knitwear.
