This colour combo with navy pants and burgundy shoes.

Cardi over tneck??

Yep.

The other day when it was extra cold l had 8 layers on including a heavy tweed coat and an extra thick overcoat that was using over a 22oz fabric (weighs as much as a small child), + a ski underlay, hat, long johns, and heaps of cashmere layers. I was outside a lot that day and needed it. I rarely wear my heavy duty overcoat, but trust me...it's the type of coat you could wear in -30 degree weather and feel warm in. I don't want to feel any cold in winter, it torments me....l can't stand it.

How old are you fxh?

These clothes all look very nice but they are the clothes of a sixty five year old country squire. If you are sixty five or neAr it, carry on. If you're nowhere near sixty five why are you dressing like a well to do grandad?

Fxh was working when AC/DC played in the local park in front of about 20 people in the early 70's.

I know fxh fxh knows his stuff but floral ties are just not my thang and he does indeed dresses like he is about 50 or close.

This is a common (mis) perception. Put on a brown houndstooth or brown plaid jacket and suddenly it is old and country.

So if you wear tweed is it automatically old?

What would young it up?

Or is it to be avoided altogether until 50+?

What tweed if any is not old?

I am interested in the alternatives that do not connote geriatric status.

Good question. At what age does tweed jacket and tattersall shirt, cords and brogues become an aspirational outfit? Especially if you're not a history professor? It looked great on the vets in 'All Creatures Great and Small' but that was set in the 1930s. Foo always looked wrong trying to force his gun clubs and longeings on us in New York City.

Clearly it is a choice to wear traditionally country tissues in urban settings. I get that. May indeed seem peculiar in NYC.

Everything we wear is aspirational in one shape or another otherwise we would dress like the rest of the schlubs out there.

Depending on who you are, it is folly to wear anything other than black shoes with city suits.

The university professor dressing in such a manner is not current practice now and hasn't been for ages so that is no basis to form opinions one way or another.

I believe that fxh fxh is able to wear whatever he wants and is not constrained by any particular rules.

It is winter down under.

Be thankful he is not one of the chumps always trying to pull off grey jackets.

I for one would not look forward to seeing him in a Pitti-esque lavender jacket, shirt unbuttoned to his midriff and no socks.

I'll dress like a senior every time if that was the other option.

Forgive me if I came across as being judgmental on how fxh fxh dresses. Pictures can only tell part of the story so when I saw the floral ties and the tweeds, I assumed that he was an older gentleman. I recall Holdfast dressed a bit similar but he was in his late 30s or early 40s back when he posted. He can dress how he wants and I have no intention of bullying him into wearing a Pitti-approved attire nor can I. We're just going by the picture and my limited knowledge.

I did not take it as being judgemental but rather questioning the overall perception that such types of clothing are nothing but geriatric. Seems to be held by many.

My point is that it should not be considered as such.

If it was, then someone who chooses Solaro is an old fogey because this tissue should only be found on Englishers expanding the empire or exploring the pyramids with Carter.

Someone who chooses a 16 ounce woolen flannel or worsted is an old fogey because such tissue is old school and unnecessary because we all have central heating.

Wearing a high twist country tissue is old fogey because hardly anyone wears or appreciates high twist except me and FriendCustomer

Anyone choosing vintage tissue is a fogey because it is vintage and not thin, sleek super 150s

Add in buying LL tissue. Fox Brothers, Arthur Harrison, Hield Bros., W. Bill, any tweed merchant, et al

All old fogey tissue merchants

Just saying.

It's usually the lighter and washed out colors that make one look old. The brown checks, the tan gunclubs, the not quite grey or green but kinda ugly anyways, etc. Bonus points if it has a yellow over check as well to mimic the pee stains.

Dark tweed is perfectly acceptable for people of all ages.

In some cases maybe but not all. Don't buy your complete argument.

Kind of like high vamp and tassel loafers

I'm a bit younger than fwiffo!

FYI - its a deliberate attempt at that look. I call it The Full Pensioner.
The jacket is a vintage 60s Ivy with swelled edges, no front darts, single hooked vent, 3 roll 3 buttons. etc Its a bit of a rough tweed but not as rough as a Harris. The shirt is again a deliberate Tattersalls brushed cotton BD. Its got a blue and green lines in the check and is sort of ecru in background colour. The trousers are what we Australians call moleskin but probably better described as thick cotton - its nowhere near as thick as British Moleskin - the trousers are probably a green colour. The shoes are vintage Italian double soled brogues with a deep burgundy colour.

Its not high finance or banking or boardroom dress. (although its probably smarter than most boardrooms in Oz and I suspect most places.). Its not mystery cheap, but spectacular, Italian artisan. Its not street wear or Rick Owens. It just is what it is. I only wear it occasionally in winter. I feel comfortable in it. People irl don't seem to have much reaction to it at all except to say it looks smart.

I'm not sure anyone - except you and me and a few here - have any idea of what it might or might not convey. Nor do they care. Other than it (hopefully) signals some care about how one dresses.

I've given you plenty of shit for your pyjamas and sweat pants Paula so I don't mind saying at first blush I thought the top half looked decent. I'm no fan of seersucker odd trousers but IIRC you live in Houston so I suppose we can give you a pass for wearing those in the dog days of summer. The shoes are hideous and the Kim Jong Ill bouffant is scarily close to Sprezzatrash's and isn't doing you any favors.
