Why I Defaulted on My Student Loans

They're only positive things with an educated consumer. If the entire population were highly educated consumers, they would have known better than to take no doc mortgages they could never repay, they believed home values would go up until the end of time and they were just getting on the ladder. If we had a population of educated consumers, the banks could try to pull whatever bullshit they wanted, and people wouldn't buy it.

This is how personal responsibility breaks down, and how laws are generally created to guard against the stupidest (when their not bought and paid for by corporations, obviously) and the rest of us eat shit as a result.

The dichotomy in America is that there are lots of college degrees but people still seem incredibly stupid.

Agreed. Freedom without education is a recipe for disaster.

You are confusing judgement and education.

No. In your case I'd say freedom while massively overestimating one's knowledge base.

Merica has the best collegiate system in the world in terms of non-pedagogical output. Due to a large part to the fact that many foreign academics wish to work at them.

I myself aspire to be a foreign academic working at an American university, but alas, I was born on a farm in Idaho, and thus will content myself to offering consulting services to MLM scammers

Clearly too many people go to college/university. Tertiary education used to be for the elite, and so it should be again. I hope the idiots that can't pay all default on their student loans so the banks refuse to lend the money at all in the future and these entitled people of middling ability are simply denied the opportunity to waste precious educational resources that should be focused on the best and brightest.

As it is we have too many liberal arts graduates; we need more tradespeople, farmers and workers of the proletariat to provide food, cheap, semi-skilled labour, and army conscripts for the coming war with the insects.

A university education is overrated unless strategic decisions are made to pursue a major where there are job prospects. Polytechnics and trade schools are underrated as alternative educational institutions for the dumb to become plumbers and meat cutters. However, Universities are now trying to figure out how to become more polytechnic like so that their graduates actually can find meaningful employment.

Add up all the holiday time plus time when someone is not in class despite taking a "full load" and you will see so much wasted time.

Why shouldn't university students go to school year round and 8 hours a day? Let's see what else is like that? Oh yeah, fucking work!

Intro biology is a repeat of grade 12. What a waste.

Liberal arts universities? They give us the DieWorkWears of this world.

If I had kids of high school leaving age you can bet there would be a serious discussion about going to trade school instead of university.

While I did all right with a university education, I could have apprenticed at the railroad at 17 like most of my family and would be retired now and in a second career.

I could have enlightened myself on my own time.

All university seats should be competitively awarded but universities are all about bums in seats paying tuition irrespective of if the student is brain dead or not.

Don't ask the population because they demand cheap education for all

Every high school graduate should have to work before pursuing post-secondary education so that they can appreciate the value of education and make sound choices.

Universities are full of "smart" kids who have been coddled throughout K-12 and are fabulous memorizers, verbal diarrhea regurgitators and multiple choice scammers. They have little original thought and no life skills

Fuck me it is depressing

Damn straight. We need kids stomping bugs instead of studying psychology!

Quite a bit actually, both on the technology front and the foreigners. Either way, my whole point is that you have a couple of excellent colleges, and lots and lots of awful ones. It's better for the population as a whole if all colleges are good.

A "couple"? According to Shanghai ranking (I picked a non-US site so you couldn't cry jingoism) Academic Ranking of World Universities - 2013 | Top 500 universities | Shanghai Ranking - 2013 | World University Ranking - 2013 , the US has 8 of the top 10, 17 of the top 20, and 37 of the top 50. And twenty of those 37 are public universities.

Those rankings do not really rank the quality of the education or what is being taught. A gender studies major is not really going to help people make better choices. Moreover, basic life skills such as personal finance are not being taught in either high school or college. Anyways, I went to one of your top 5 colleges, and I wasn't impressed with the quality of the teaching. Good research does not equal good teaching. The more acclaimed the professor, the less he cares about teaching. I'd much rather go to a non-research focused university for my education.

Fixed that for you.

Am looking to take out loans to study to be video game designer. How do I default and not pay?

Not sure if serious, but do you need to study for that? Isn't mostly self taught? Like guys who start off making a very small part of a mod in their early teens, then subsequently make larger mods and then show their work to a studio and get hired? Might be good to study a bit of CS/programming on the side so you have something to fall back on if the whole video game thing doesn't work out.

Also, do you mean doing the artwork when you say designer, or actually programming the stuff? I don't think there are many artwork jobs, and there isn't much money in it either.

A lotof my fellow students as an undergraduate spent at least 40 hours a week either in class or studying/doing homework. Even more did this in graduate school.

I suspect liberal arts students...or rather, students at liberal arts universities...spend a lot more time working than their counterparts at more research oriented universities.

+1,000,000 to trade schools

On student loans:
Students, on average, get screwed. But the logic behind not allowing bankruptcy to affect student loan debt is interesting. The majority of borrowers have no credit history, no information by which a bank can decide whether or not to offer a loan. And banks have to offer loans at deflated interest rates (I think), so no sub-prime student loans.

Or you just cap the loans at a maximum of let's say 25k in total, causing tuition fees to drop instantly. Or performance based loans, get certain grades and finish college in a certain amount of time and you will not have to repay your entire loan. Or you just subsidise the colleges directly, removing the burden from students entirely, but have high selection selection standards, meaning not just anyone can go to college. Or you cap tuition fees growth rates at inflation and the tuition fees for public colleges to let's say 5k/year, and you ban for profit universities altogether. Or a combination of all of those, or maybe something not in this list.

There are so many options that are better than the current US system.

Anyone idealistic today? You want rampant grade fraud, exchanges of grades for pussy, payola, ass sex, and all other forms of corruption in a system? Offer students a ready means to game it, and in the process attract all kinds of shitty characters to teaching that will readily take advantage of it. And then, on top of it, these corrupted students enter the work world ready and willing to trade all of the above for more important things, like keeping pedophile teachers in class or bribing congressman.

A number of states already have incentive based loans. And colleges are already heavily subsidized. A cap on loans may drive down tuition, but it will also create another barrier for the poor to chase the questionable American Dream of upward mobility.

Agreed that too many kids go to college. The best way to address this is to provide viable alternatives to college...something many Eutopean countries do well. But to either restrict the number of universities available (many which are private) or to mandate higher selection standards (and holy shit is that a bad idea...not higher standards but mandating them) is not the way to go there.

Provide a substitute and demand will drop.

Places like University of Phoenix need to go.

Universities offer scholarships based on grades, which is basically the same thing as not having to repay part of your loans. Don't see any problems there.

I do not have a lot of sympathy for students who piss away thousands of dollar for a degree in worthlessness. More young people need to go into business themselves. Shit, I learned more from my boss in 1 week of assisting than I did in a semester of schooling. Thankfully my student loan was only 6000. I have a friend who has well over 100K in debt.

I know Millenials get the inherent flack for this, but I'd attribute it more to the advent of mass technology and communication. Everyone has access to see how the elite live; Facebook posts, Instagram, etc. constantly reminds people how others are spending their leisure time. Fascination with wealth dictates to havenots how their lives "should" look.

And let's be honest - it's not even SF and the like idealizing a lifestyle beyond the reach of the majority of people. Look at even your sitcoms like Modern Family where everyone is living the suburban dream with big houses, fancy cars and shoes, and only one breadwinner per family.

The fact that everyone can see these examples now, along with the proliferation of "aspirational lifestyle" media has spoiled Americans for work. And after all, who can blame them? When the oblivious whores on whichever-city's-real-housewives are pissing and moaning about their favorite manicurist being busy during their appointment, you start to normalize such bitchy behavior and you create a generation of invalids that think that's how the other half lives.

I feel better that I rarely, rarely watch tv and hardly ever watch sitcoms beyond the simpsons.

Clearly theres a lot of idiots taking out loans and defaulting - but then theres a lot of idiots anywhere you care to look. So thats not much of a statement.

What gets me though is that in an era when interest rates are around somewhere between zero and 3% that debt collectors/banks can add fees and high interest rates to the principal somewhere in the stratosphere of credit card rates.???

Which raises the question of credit card rates - when interest rates are zero to 3% etc etc... they are 22%+

Credit cards don't have any collateral. However, when you think about it, even junk bonds don't really pay much over 10%. So that means an average person is about twice as risky as a company with a bad credit rating. Market prices have been affected by QE, so perhaps the real yield for most bonds should be 200-500bps higher if you don't take central bank buying into account.

Besides, banks are extremely cautious at the moment. I make plenty of money, but can't get any credit card because I don't have a credit history. I can't even open a savings account.

Is that true re credit card? - I'm not accusing you of fibbing at all - just find it hard to believe

I used to get CC offers all the time and offers to extend limit to 30K etc. I did extend one of mine to 12K ( the others are @ 6k) in good times because they mainly offer it when you don't need it and when you need it they don't offer it. Same with open instant line of credit on my house @ mortgage rates - I maintain it for $80 a year - just in case I need to flee to Brazil or thruth's frozen swampy wasteland barn quickly one night.

I'm pretty sure anyone can get a CC here. Even unemployed.

Germany has mastered this system. The problem is that in American, people without degrees are looked down upon.

The worse effect is that the aspiration triggers over-consumption beyond their means, turning into CC debt, and more topical, student loans spent on lifestyle and not education.

Unfortunately, if you trim off even 2% of this needless consumption, you send the economy into recession. Trim 4 or 5%? Impossible to fathom. We've created a beast we can't tame.

I got a scholarship because I'm a spic. Actually, I don't even know if it was because of that, but probably. Got a 10K Scholarship when I applied to Electrical Engineering to UCF. My GPA was 3.84. Interesting enough I got accepted into all universities except University of Florida because I had a C on Biology when my major was Electrical Engineering. I have heard of people who got accepted in UF with a GPA of 2.3, makes no freaking sense.

True. The UK is very strict when you don't have a credit history. No history is worse than a bad history. I make low 6 figures, just for myself, no family or mortgage to maintain.

For 95% of the banks I cannot get a CC, savings account or even a current account. I now have just a current account at one bank with all my money in it, which I got through my employer.

It's terrible. I could transfer my sterling into euros and start investing in euros, get a euro denominated CC, but I don't want to take that FX risk. I might be able to get a credit card for people with bad credit, with 40% APR, but I don't want to risk being denied for it and having too many applications on my report this year.

Monkey that's amazing story. I must talk to my brother who lives in Scotland.
Here anyone can open any type of account.

Have you tried the Australian banks who are now in UK?

Two sad things in that one sentence. One, it sucks that, with a 3.84 GPA and an obvious good amount of intelligence, you still aren't sure that you're worthy of a scholarship because you might have gotten it as a minority. Which is a really unfortunate side effect of affirmative action.

Two - it's absurd mind that Hispanics are automatically considered a minority. A castizo whose family has for generations reaped the benefits of his ethnicity in a place like Mexico or Cuba can come to America and automatically qualify for benefits designed to remedy the exact "evils" the castizo benefited from in his own country. Even a guy like me, fair skinned, blue eyed, can technically claim I'm a Hispanic because my grandfather was from Chile and my Swedish grandmother lived there for some time as well.
