Agreeable Menswear Post Of The Day

mmm, threads from over ten years ago. You have to go that far back to find compliants about service? Maybe they were getting to grips with gearing up for demand? I've chosen and had 5 pairs made on 4 different occasions over the last 3 years. Never had an issue. As far as I'm aware the store that has stocked them over the last three years has never had an issue in getting their order on time.

Sorry if I seem like I want to have Ambrosi's babies but I can't fault the product or service. And I am a customer.
Like you (or someone else) said here (or somewhere else) the service level depends A LOT on the customer. Maybe he managed to get rid of all the annoying igents and hence, no more complaints.

He may have said to me once that he appreciates me properly looking at cloths and deciding which one to have made into a pair of pants over some rich bod flicking through books and having ten pairs made because he can. Or he may not have.

Mr. A is very down to earth. I feel like the slagging off he got years ago is un-needed on my experience and even more so to be kept dragging back up. Again, I say this as a customer and repeat customer a few times.

He just doesn't strike me as the type to do anyone an injustice.

And lets me honest, Foo is a bit, odd as fuck. Oval head or not.

mmm, why you gotta assume so much? simply an interesting read of another Foo shit show and other whiny cunts this time involving Ambrosi. You focus on the least important thing and miss the oval headed dwarf saga. Are you sharing your account with Pimpernel now?

Maybe call me gobshite again to feel better? You know you can if you want to.

I think there are two things to consider when looking at complaints about small tailoring businesses.

One is that the tailor will find it hard to find outworkers with skills beyond the home seamstress level and to match manufacturing capacity with orders. And secondly that he is frequently dealing with hobbyists who see clothing as a game. Not an easy business to be in.

I'm merely pointing out that there is no drama whatsoever in ordering trousers from this tailor. Not with delivery time, nor product. That is, at least for me, the most important thing. While I'll admit that might not be very entertaining for a forum to read I feel it fair to point it out. It is a bit of nuance to the conversation.

I have no ideal what you mean with your Pimpernel comment.

Feel better about what?

No, I won't call you a gobshite. Why would I?

Here is a thread about frustration in getting delivery of Ambrosi pants and him not being communicative at all.
Of course it's extremely annoying and frustrating not to get what you paid for, neither any response to your enquires. And this happened many times apparently.

It seems he has improved his service, fortunately, but after all those issues in the past I would be a little cautious in ordering his products.

Yes, of course FG. Thats why I pointed out my own dealings with him. Only 3 pairs of my trousers from him were ordered at his two trunk shows I attended. The other two pairs were ordered, via the stockists in town, as a single transaction, on seperate occasions. None of my trousers were late. I'd read those SF threads a long time before I'd seen the trousers, I too had doubts about delivery times being honoured with my first order. The store assured me there wouldn't be any and they have proved to be right.

I feel I wouldn't be being loyal to Mr. Ambrosi, whom I find totally agreeable, if I didn't "box his corner" a little in his absense.

There are certainly a lot of stories in various internet fora about Ambrosi's terrible service, very long wait periods, the wrong details in the trousers and so on.

It seems that if you order his trousers through a trunk show held by an intermediary, such as The Armoury, you will get your trousers quickly and with no problems at all. However, if you order from the man himself, you are taking a chance on pain and disappointment.

Here's another anecdote (this one from only six years ago now) from an Australian menswear blogger:

His trousers took a year to arrive, instead of a couple of months, and were too tight on him as well.

But, despite that, he still considers Ambrosi to be "a friend" - even though he only spoke with him twice and feared that he would never actually receive his expensive trousers!

A delay and a mistake may always happen and as much as annoying it's forgivable, what is not acceptable is the absense of communication.

I hate to say this, because I don’t like generalizations, but I think in general when you deal with Napolitan tailors (and I patron half a dozen of them), you have to keep in mind that the modus operandi and interaction model is a bit different than the anglosaxon world we might be used to.

Details not written on paper and confirmed (multiple times) might be forgotten, timelines might be a little bit more “flexible” than we would like, and maybe you need to spend more time doing “oversight” of your commission than you would with an SR tailor.

in exchange, you typically get outstanding quality, true benchmade craftmanship (in most case by artisans in mom and pop ateliers), a commitment to do right by you no matter how long it takes, excellent value for money, and being treated as a lifelong friend. These are things I really enjoy out of my relationship with those that I work with in Napoli, and for that I’m ok with things being a bit late (within reason).

Save for one exception, whom I won’t name, I never felt mistreated, shortchanged, lied, neglected or otherwise wronged by any Napolitan tailor. I have never dealt with Ambrosi directly, but I know of him by various clients of his, as well as other tailors/trousermakers who speak highly of him. I would take their opinion, under the above “rules”, over any ovalhead or anonymous iGent on a random style blog or forum.

As much as one can dislike the so called iGents (aren't we too?), there were so many (massive) issues with Ambrosi, that I can't imagine it's all made up.
I agree about high craftsmanship and human warmth you find in Neapolitan workshops, but seriousness and punctuality are also important values, that apparently went lost in those cases.

As a conclusion it seems this would appear about right.

He really seems to have a lucky hand for this garment.

Nice details:

Very interesting in the last picture, the buttoned cuff. Maybe to allow the remotion of eventual dirt?
They do look good, but unless he does a trunk show in Amsterdam or The Hague, I couldn't take the risk of sending in my own measurements. Some measurement would be bound to be hopelessly under recorded.

Wouldn't you be able to check that being a Moderator?

It should be clear from the style of writing, no account sharing is going on. Why would it?
Oh, you think I think you two are actually sharing? No it was about missing the central point of messages. Thanks for helping out.

That subtext wasn't clear to me. I just read it at face value, the nuances are not always apparent to me on a posting on a forum topic.

If, "are you sharing your account with Pimpernel now?" has some other meaning than, er, are you sharing your account with Pimpernel now? That subtext wasn't clear to me. I just read it at face value, the nuances are not always apparent to me on a posting on a forum topic.

Pimpy & Saucey:

I think Thruthy is referring to an 'alleged' propensity both of you have for sometimes missing the point raised in a post hence his quip about you being the same person.

All very well, but semi-stream of consciousness stuff always risks being misinterpreted or construed. I read quick and reply fast, and if it pricks my interest I will respond immediately. I don't give time to way up the nuances or double entendre. I take the meaning is direct and at face value. Just saying. And yes, I will employ a bit of Jack Kerouac stream of consciousness stuff when the mood takes me.

I'm making no judgments, I'm explaining the post as I understood it...

Sorry, I thought he was Belarussian bus conductor.
Is that serious or snark? I can't tell because I read fast and reply even faster and I don't get double entendres even if there are none to be had.

Grand Potentate Grand Potentate is there a forum translation add-on? Our old banned euros had no comprehension issues. I miss them.

This reads like a Joe Orton story.

I wasn't making any judgements either, just stating some facts as I see them. I didn't get it. So what, move on.

I have no cultural reference to that meme. So I don't get the Captain Obvious. Sorry.

I'm on a slightly different pirate ship to the banned Europeans, so I wouldn't get their groovy understanding of it. I understand you miss such enlightened chaps. I get it.

By all means, ban me, invite them back or just invite them back and enjoy the inappropriate pornography when they get worked up and excited and the chaos they bring when they target individuals for a bit of cyber bullying because they're horrible feral pack animals.

As I said, I'm not part of your crew, I'm a guest and I will stay just as long as you want me to go, or you ban me.

Captain Obvious is from a US TV commercial. Not something I’d automatically expect anyone from Europe to get.

FFS, you have been around here long enough and Rambo accuses you of missing the point daily. Isn’t it obvious.... sorry, should not have used that word again.

Well, I am sure he knows who Captain Senseless is so we will go with that

I'm impressed that you know who Joe Orton is...
He's pretty much a forgotten playwright now, including the whole kitchen sink drama. So yes, impressive, unless in Australia it was part of the school syllabus?

Sorry, I just got the impression he thought I was a cunt.

The Smiths introduced a whole generation to kitchen sink realism in the 1980s.

My eldest is getting in The Smiths, despises Morrissey the single artist for all the reasons you guys do, but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't go for any kitchen sink stuff in B&W. To them it has be colour and very modern.

No one thinks of you as a cunt. You are not belligerent.

Love Orton...

Harry Andrews and Peter McEnery always make me laugh in the film version of Entertaining Mr. Sloane...So camp.

Orton would have been a major talent if he hadn't had his head caved in...

seriousness is subjective, and punctuality is important to you.

We are so quick to amplify opinions to which we have no first hand experience, which are inmaterial to us (if we will never order from him, then what we think of him is irrelevant), and yet have the power to affect this gentleman’s livelihood. What for?
