Agreeable Menswear Post Of The Day

Maybe they will bring back Bulldog Drummond. I read ‘The Black Gang’ not too long ago:-

“Throughout the Drummond stories, much of the language used by McNeile's characters relating to ethnic minorities or Jews is considered by the academic Joan DelFattore to be "intensely conservative by modern standards";[2] Green observes that while the characters of other contemporary writers, such as Agatha Christie, "exhibit the inevitable xenophobia and anti-semitism of the period, McNeile's go far beyond the 'polite' norms".[32] J.D. Bourn considers his language to be "rather distasteful",[119] while the academic Michael Denning observed that "Drummond is a bundle of chauvinisms, hating Jews, Germans, and most other foreigners".[120] The academic Ion Trewin comments that for the readers of the 1920s and '30s, McNeile was seen at the time as "simply an upstanding Tory who spoke for many of his countrymen".

So it might not play well with an international audience. UKIP voters might like it though.

IIRC, James Bond wears suits only on a few occasions in his films. Mostly when meeting M and/ or at social events. Most of the time he wears more casual/ stealth/ combat related garments, diving/ swimming gear or nothing at all.
The suit part is only a big thing because it's kind of disappearing in our days.

Exactly. And it's not something you'd wish to emulate in terms of cut. The latest Bond suits scream RTW when they're bespoke. That's just wrong.

Also, real-world villains dress like shite. Making them look good int heir costumes only serves to glorify evil.

What about Brosnan's boxy-cut Brionis?

That was the 1990s and the early 2000s, the days before social media when no one knew anything about sartorialism. We were so easily impressed back then. Or we just didn't care about suits and things.

It was also the silhouette back in the days. And the franchise was less about car and clothing brands in the early days (with the exception of Aston-Martin, maybe). I don't think Brioni got as much out of it as Tom Ford did marketing wise.

That’s because if anybody said that about Oliver Reed a punch up would ensue.

Good old Ollie, they don't make them like that anymore.

Just reading a Peter O'Toole's biography and I'm up to the ill-fated, although highly box office successful production of the Scottish play at the Old Vic in 1980. There's a quite a few old news reports and interviews on YouTube during the run. He's a year older than me in 1980 and he's completely gaunt and ravaged with the booze and fags. He looks early sixties, not in his late forties. His clothes are a couple of sizes too big for him and he's certainly on something, he was off booze at the time, but whether it's cocaine or large amounts of prescription drugs it's hard to tell.

You couldn't make 'em like that even if you wanted to. There's a long interview with Richard E. Grant somewhere, where he goes into some detail about this. With today's enormously high movie budgets and actors' salaries, missing a shoot, or turning up late or hungover would be disastrous. And even if you managed to do the acting bits, you can't fool HD cameras when you've just spent a night on the lash.

Of course today's actors do all of the Ollie Reed stuff in between movies, but it's not a daily, regular thing, like it was with Ollie and Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole, and the rest of their generation. And if anything it tends to be cocaine these days. Much cleaner, and makes you look like a demigod because of the fat loss (supermodels live on the stuff). Or designer drugs.

Wonderful world, the film industry.

Aye cos getting absolutely pissed out of your skull on a nightly basis and kicking off with all and sundry is definitely something to be admired and sadly lacking in the youth of today eh? Get up there!

Sorry - the reverence held by some for loud obnoxious alcoholics has always baffled the shit out of me. As for those mentioned, can’t help thinking what their careers might have been like if they’d know how to handle the bottle. David Hemings was a teen idol type in Blow Up. Did you see the state of him in Gladiator (I think that was his last film?) bloated fat mess with ridiculous eyebrows.

The HD cameras are particularly brutal, of course the technology is there to smooth over with some Technicolor sheen.

We only know these drunks from their artistic endeavours and salacious antics. It fulfils an archetypal story telling need without getting burnt.

Shane MacGowan served a similar function in the 1980s: the promise of freedom if only you'd come along and get pissed with him and his pirate crew of rumbullion sodden Irish reel playing punks.

It's a lot better than having junkie heroes.

It’s no different. While reserving a certain amount of admiration for tortured talented artists who happened to be a mess I have no admiration for that side of their lives. (McGowan is pathetic and not even Irish!)

I accept that there may be a common link between the tortured soul that’s capable of creating great art but also feeds off the need for excess, but I can’t help wondering if they may have been equally as creative clean and sober, and if so then we’ve been denied untold amounts of product.

I reserve equal contempt for people I’ve observed in my own life and ‘rock stars’ / celebs acting like sloppy arseholes in public. Just cos you’ve sold a few records doesn’t absolve you. There’s a piece of film of Keith Richards throwing a TV off a hotel balcony which I’m sure loads of people observe and think “yeah, go on Keef - rock and roll!” - it’s wasteful and pathetic, especially coming from the ‘Salt of the Earth’ working class hero of modest origins.

you must think highly of Keith Moon

You're so damned literal. American, are you? Or are you Continental?

Fantastic drummer but pissed it away. More than likely had serious mental problems, probably undiagnosed.

I notice that even when Townshend (no stranger to excess and mental issues himself) ‘salutes’ his memory in interviews and on stage he still manages to get some digs in, calling him a ‘wanker’ or whatever even after all these years.

By some accounts Moon was not a pleasant character.

Probably one of those Robin Williams bipolar types who always seems to be ‘on’ which is funny for a minute but a huge pain to deal with long term.

Some quote about Moon I remember reading was that if there was a party going on and he disappeared you had to be on your guard cos you know he was planning some stupid stunt like crashing in through the window or throwing custard pies around or whatever. The novelty of dealing with people like that wears off fast.

^
It was rather more than him being a egotistical joker who didn't know when to stop, rumour has it that when a child, he had spent time in a mental hospital for attacking his mother.

I've read this several times.

I don't there was anyone with a Degree in Suit Science in those days.

It’s no different.

It's completely different, the antics of the hellraisers when they would go out to their local in Camden Town and wake up next day in Cap Ferrat makes for an entertaining read. Art Pepper shooting-up and getting his missus to go and the game to pay for junk is not the same thing as all.
