All About Watches

... in your pants. everyone, who is into watches knows that. fwiw, despite what some people say about your rb rolex. I like it ...

ps: not going to drop my less expensive watches for the sake of the fucktard monkeyface, just stuff your bloody ignorance in your face, you stupid moron. better buy a pretentious car and call it a day ..., oops.

psps: viav, no need to tell me about my algortihm. street fight works differently, I tell ya ...

A Rolex is built to take punishment. That is certainly the case with their movements, but to a certain extent, a similar standard of ruggedness and reliability applies to their cases and bracelets as well, due to the high-grade steel that they use. (Which is often not case with ultra-luxury sports watches such as the Nautilus, Aquanaut, Royal Oak, and Overseas, I am given to understand, from what I see on other people's wrists and photos. Perhaps doghouse doghouse can enlighten us with his personal experience?)

That being said, if you end up getting some of the earlier (even vintage) models with the tritium lume on the dial and the hands - where the luminous material has long begun to degrade and flake off - some of that may just fall off as a result a similar fall or even with daily wear and tear. It is not the end of the world, as it can be set right by professionals. Nevertheless, it is something to keep in mind before you venture off to "radial dial," "maxi dial," etc. Rolexes from Seikos and Tissots.

I was at a Van der Valk on Saturday, which is an excellent quality Dutch hotel chain, whose motif is super large rooms. And I can recommend them unless you need 5 star quality, the exact location of the hotel is a necessary concern to your visit and your budget is of no real concern.

They have a glossy magazine and as I had some time, I managed to go through two of them and there they were the gratuitous placing of Rolex Submariners as advertising copy to promote the hotel chain as a aspirational brand.

And that is the ultimate concern with Rolex. The Oyster case is a design classic, the pedigree is immaculate, quality superlative and yet....

The whiff of new money is almost embarrassing.

My own view is, is that you should let others worry about the negative connotations...

One element of style, maybe the most important one, is not giving a fuck what others think.

The Oyster is indeed a design classic and should be on the considered list for this fact alone. The Omega Speedmaster is another, it's been on the moon! The watch of choice for Neil, Buzz and the boys...nuff said.

The Rolex cases have high nickel content, which happens to cause an allergic reaction in some people. Tritium will age no matter what make. Gold is a soft metal and is prone to wear and is easily dented compared to stainless steel.

The worse watch I ever had was the Omega Speedmaster Redux a great idea rendered useless by the overly sensitive piggy-back movement which meant that cycling over Dutch cobblestone roads instantly resulted in a trip under warranty to get it repaired. 3 times in a year and then I sold it. I thought it was just a bad watch that had slipped through the quality control, but no the model itself was intrinsically bad.

Rolex use 904L for their Stainless Steel cases. A common grade of Stainless.

From Chronocentric

What grade of steel is used in modern OMEGA watches?
OMEGA uses stainless steel 1.4435 or 316L. Rolex uses stainless steel 1.4439 or 904L which is slightly different from 1.4435. Steel 904L and 316L have the same grade of hardness.

The grade of nickel discharge with 904L is slightly higher, causing an increased chance of allergic reaction when worn by people sensitive to nickel.

While technically, 904L has a slightly higher resistance to corrosion, this is only noticable under extreme conditions that a wristwatch should never face. Where this is mainly of concern is in industrial applications using steel in equipment for handling chlorides, sulfur dioxide gas or other toxic materials.

The differences for use in wristwatches is quite nominal. Almost no watch manufacturers except Rolex consider it worth using the 904L steel, especially given that the price for 904L is approximately three times that of 316L.

Interesting article, but the Werkstoff no. for 316L is 1.4404 and not 1.4435. That's a modified grade.

When looking at materials, in this case, Stainless I would stick with using the BSSA website (or other national equivalents) not jewelry/watch websites. That's an engineer talking ;)

As for why Rolex have specified this particular grade (904L), you would need to look at the design specification, however, you cannot discount marketing. Remember, men are nerds, and like the sound of something made out of a soupa-doupa high tech material, even if in this case, it isn't.

viaattovannucci, You sir are a jealous arrogant idiot. He is turning 40 and could easily pass for 25, not to mention he is married to a drop dead gorgeous wife. PRO TIP come to SD and say things like "gold bezel ring and crown" around me and the people I know; on my mothers life I could make one phone call and send you back to puberty with your balls cut off and stuffed in your face, later to be found in a ditch on the outskirts of Tijuana by Polica Federal. No joke, have respect for everybody and yourself or deal with the consequences of your actions. That is grown man talk so handle your business accordingly.

Never gets old.

Over an extended period, like several generations, the 904 grade might prove more resistance to pitting from sweat when compared to 316. The chief benefit in industry is that it is resilient to corrosion, stress cracking and chloride attack which is over spec'd for a watch. In oil and gas it's generally been replaced by super duplex material grades which are cheaper with higher strength and corrosion resistance.

316 is pretty much as good as needed, but when it comes to a luxury high-end watch, good enough is not going to justify the extra dosh is it? Like the Rolex DeepSea Sea Dweller that 12800ft/3900m rating is never going to be used, but to those who like it, that extra rating justifies the several thousands extra on a bog standard Submariner.

If Rolex was worth a shit they would use 17-4

Seiko charges £175 just to look at the watch. That's about what I paid for the watch in the first place. Might as well buy a new one. Such a ripoff. Tissot charged £12 to take a look, that's more like it.

I have just come across this Gérald Genta interview from veryimportantwatches.com. The highlight is, of course, where he concurs with my frenemy W walker on the Reverso.

I was only able to find it as a .pdf, so I hope these converted .jpgs work. (edit: The .pdf is now uploaded. The link is at the end of the post.)

No mention of the Bueler Assmaster. Shame.

"...though I don’t like wearing watches, I do really like creating them!... Personally, my interest is more intrigued by a pair of high-quality shoes, because they offer comfort, or by an elegant piece of clothing, because elegance forms part of my personality."

The Shooman that you?

Interesting watch action on my hols: on the plane a lady was wearing a Longines Conquest, the vintage variety, I assume it was her fathers from the late 50's. There was, and I double checked, two different German chaps sporting gold and blue ceramic Submariners. On the promenade next to the beach there were some African chaps trying to sell fake Omega's of the extremely poor variety with wonky dials and awful quartz movements. In Grenada I saw the new Tudor Heritage Black Bay 41mm, it's too large and the 36mm is much better in keeping with the Explorer vibe for today.

I kept it simple with the Seiko Marinemaster 300m. Under the radar of potential unwanted scrutiny.

2 tone 36mm. The mega sex
and a two tone at that

On this important note. . .

LOTS of two-tone AP ROs for sale on Chrono24 from - should this surprise? - GERMANY!

A couple of choice specimen that reflect Prince Michael's preference, also, wie gesagt, echte Herrenuhren:

It certainly peaked for everyone going out to have a good time. After the 80's it was all the home as total entertainment unit. You stopped seeing girls done up like Sade and some dude doing the Jackson moonwalk on the dance floor. I miss those days.

What about the new cocktail Presage range from Seiko:

http://forums.watchuseek.com/f21/2017-seiko-cocktail-time-srpb41-srpb43-srpb44-srpb46-4164802.html

Nice, but drop them once and they're done. Super fragile.

That will be where they are making the savings then. Don't wear them for anything other than a pre-dinner cocktail and then put away. I will keep my pennies for the Tudor Black Bay 36mm.

I much prefer the looks of the Presage though, quite different things to compare.
