We need around 95% vaccination rates in the community for herd immunity. It has fallen to 92% since the pandemic started. That provides the tinder for the fire to rip through big swathes of unvaccinated people. How much we can contain it now is hotly debated.

Yep, but the differences trip up small minds. Measles is largely a one-time deal, whereas covid re-infection is common. So herd immunity is a more viable thing with measles, once you get over 95% vaccination (or past infection) rate. The appeal of the ‘let it rip’ approach can overshadow the dangers of infection (1 in 500 pedi mortality rate in the US in ‘good times’), the safety of the vaccine and the dangers of giving the virus a big pool to play in and strengthen itself.
