Disagreeable Menswear Post Of The Day

The bloody igents all overlook one crucial point: the body is the foundation upon which all sartorialism is built.

So when you're five-foot-nothing you need to make sure your proportions are still those of a six-foot-eleven demigod, or as close as you can make them (the head, alas, cannot be shrunk). You live on three leaves from a privet hedge per week if you must.

This, my dear friends, is the sartorial tragedy that dare not speak its name. Edward VIII managed it, only just (and only because he had a narrow skull). In today's world of tighter-fitting coats and trousers, he would look like a dickhead.

I believe it's time the sartorial world had a frank and open discussion etc.

Hi all,

Newcomer here, sick of those try-hards out there who preaches or follows clown outfits to cover their own self-inflicted erection, so I'm glad to be here.

Now let's get things started with a self-proclaimed master (a Cromp fan by the way) in Hong Kong.

Sure he'd love to hear your comments on how he dresses with 'flare' (though I'm pretty sure he meant flair or flamboyance)

Chinese have no soul. So it's useless to discuss their outfits.

I've said this for years. The iGentry will not be persuaded though. Perhaps because they are all built like a cross between Mr. Kool Aid and a mutant pear.

Dude, wtf. I don't care whether he's fat or thin, tall or short, pretty or ugly, but learn to dress for your body type before you proclaim yourself a master...

I'd say learn whether you are remotely aesthetically pleasing before putting pictures of yourself on the internet as a person who understands good aesthetics.

Otherwise, stick to toilet pics like CesareRomiti

I wouldn't mind if Winston Churchill posted some WAYWRN pics on instagram. He was not thin...

Oh but I never proclaimed myself a master. It's just that I have a worm's eye view whereas most of you do not. I make all the sartorial mistakes so you don't have to. Besides, the lesser creatures are my brethren. When I call myself Untermensch I bloody well mean it.

You're that dude from the pictures? We caught you!

As you get older, you realise that certain stuff you can't get away with. Like not shaving.

Over the years I've come across a few ladies, very few I might add, who were of very average or below average looking, but knew how to dress and present themselves extremely well. So they could move themselves up into being well presented and even desirable through force of style and presence.

For men it's a lot easier, the desirable alpha male type is really not based on physique or good looks. It really is a simple case of dressing well. If you're built like a beer barrel it doesn't really matter, as if you heterosexual, ugliness isn't an issue with the potential partners or your mates.

Male dressing is all about power.

Disagree here, its far easier for a woman to 'dress-up' and look presentable...Much harder for men. For a man to look his best, his clothes have to be well cut, not so with a woman. Women have more 'visual tricks' available to them. A couple on inches of well defined cleavage will usually do the trick LOL.

Hmmm....a different perspective. But women generally find that one brand that makes clothes that fits their figure and stick with them. But yes, there's a lot more size issues as regards curves, bumps and fat distribution with women.

I'm a pretty much straight-up-and-straight-down chap, so lots off RTW stuff for me requires very little tailoring to make it look MTM or even bespoke.

The range of clothes, cosmetics, jewellery, hair-styles available to women give them far more flexibility/options to hide/conceal 'deficiencies'. Men have no such luxury.

For men, cut is everything. Most men, including most iGents don't understand this, and hence look like shit, for some, very expensive shit.

I think it was Flusser who said that a man interested in dressing well should first learn to wear a grey suit well.

Sage advice...

The same as you should not be allowed to take colour photos until you've mastered B&W.

Of course, that was back in the world before digital capturing.

I have once told my ex, my world was just black and white before i've met her.

while she looked amused for a moment....

i've told her "my world is all black after I've met her"

Well, grey is neutral, no distractions, therefore, its easier to see the quality of cut without the distraction of pattern. This is true of most solids obviously, but I think it works best with grey.

Grey's neutrality is also beneficial when learning to accessorize. Grey can take most colours of shirt and tie.

Most men are drawn to darker colours like navy or black though.

That's because most men look good in those colours, independent of their skin tone.

Here's the suit made from Dashing Tweed™ with reflective material in it made up. I don't fancy it in either state:

Don't mind the first one, but I'd have to get may paws on it to realy tell

The second, is, not good. But I admire his FU attitood

I think younger men look better in grey actually. But, darker colours work better at night.

Same suit

That particular cloth has some 3M™ tape woven into it. Without flash it appears sort of light gray. The material can damage the needle point and definitely blunted my shears' edges.
How does it look under a black light? I might consider getting one made for rave parties.

If it glows, it would not only look awesome but also camouflage the other stuff that shows up under a black light.

Not sure about black light, but it seems to store light energy (probably not the right description):

This type of cloth is very thick, though. Might have a heat stroke on rave parties. Unless the drugs kill you first...

Its the very existence of such a large range of clothes, cosmetics, jewellery, hair-styles available to women that also makes them vulnerable to cataclysmic train-wrecks in appearance. Men, at least until recently, have had it easy to look decent enough.

This last bit is what everyone needs.

Theres nothing worse than a Navy suit on a very young looking man. Especially if he has a "baby" face - it makes him look even younger and more inexperienced than others.

He's running out of road...he needs to expand into new markets.
Running out of road?
Say it ain’t so!
Surely there are dozens of undiscovered tailors in Southern Europe where he can go and get some more ill-fitting brown suits made up for five thousand euros then regale us with stories of his adventures - all paid for by his ‘clients’ of course.

I thought a lot of the Dashing Tweed stuff was meant to be worn in London on your bicycle as a warning to lorries, jihadists and unemployed Uber drivers that you are sending out an insect type repellent not to be swotted away?

Some of their cloth I've quite liked, on the webpage that is, but everyone who's commented has said it's pretty ropey quality wise.
