Everything Eyewear

I bought a second pair of Tres Noir sunglasses recently - the 101. American made, high quality and not dumb Luxotica priced. I’m not really a fan of a lot of their styles, but if you find something you like in your size then I’d definitely recommend them:

American Optics were my favorite aviators with a long history of military contracts (De Niro in Taxi Driver) and a good price - I got my last pair for $60. Unfortunately, they did a ‘re-launch’ a few years ago and now priced themselves into a different level. It’s a shame, since they also relaunched their old Saratoga acetate frames (famously worn by JFK):

Notice Oliver Peoples have drastically reduced their prices, which is a good thing:

Those are similar to the prices I use to pay in the late 80s and early 90s.

They don’t seem to be any cheaper here. 🙁

Just ordered the Allyn Scura Legend tortoise shell with the sunglass clip-ons. I've had these before and they're a great frame, big, bold and classic. The last pair I'd scratched the lenses on the beach and then I just ended up using them for when I'm having a shave in the bathroom. Might get green transition lenses instead of using the clip-ons. Haven't decided yet. When it comes to transition lenses, green is the way to go.

Finally arrived today - The Legend's - they got lost in the USPS facilities in California. Good to go with the clip-ons which saves me some dosh on the lenses. But still nearly €500 per lens. As the optician said ''That's each...''

fxh fxh is a fan of clip-on shades. I had some for my Garret Leigh’s but couldn’t stand them - impossible to get on or off without putting a smudge inside, between the two lenses.

Me in 2016 on this forum with clip ons and wet hair combed straight back.

I am in Albury atm . Wore my Shurons with clip ons driving up Hume Highway today. 4 hours. Had to buy a new replacement clip ons 2 years ago as the clip on shades broke at the bridge stress point. No problem Shuron shipped from USA without extortion.

look who's alive

Right royally screwed up: the temple on the Allyn Scura's Legend's on the Medium size has been reduced from 147 to 145. Didn't pick that up, as I am only interested in bridge and lens size and 145 is generally good to go. I didn't think this would effect the width sizing, but it does, as the 147 size was on an angle on the main frame. They've changed the sizing and the model is the same designation.

Edit: waste of time the frames are indeed too small. Don't know I managed not picking that up when I went to get the lenses. And the opticians could have weighed in and said they looked too small.

I'll contact Allyn Scura to see if they have any of the old models stashed somewhere.

U are older than the teen I thought

I signed up for vision insurance this year - figure I’ll splurge on new Rx sunglasses. I’m looking for something kinda Wayfarer-like that isn’t Luxotica or have a brand name written all over it. Finding something with the pantoscopic tilt would be the icing on the cake.

Insurance will pay $200 towards frames, but I haven’t seen anything too exciting yet. If all else fails, I’ll just get lenses put into the Tres Noir frames I wear most days.

I found a local optician who stocks AO. I’m going to drop by sometime and try on the Saratoga (JFK’s sunglasses of choice):

They look like Persol’s.
I think they are usually confused with Wayfarers, since they were both equally popular back then. JFK might’ve owned a pair of Ray Bans, but in most of the pics I’ve seen he’s wearing AOs.

Anyway, I’m still on the fence. They feel robust and look nice - but might be too wide for my face.

They’re nothing special. You can do better.

Dammit. I hate you for being right. I absolutely love the look of these sitting on the bench, so it’s hard to admit that they don’t look good on. Back to the Oliver Peeps and Garret Leight drawing board.

Kicking myself for not taking a pic of these on while I was in the shop. Moscot Lemtosh:

I like these but that not at that price!

Mrs Dropbear wants me to get another pair of aviators:

But I’m digging these Moscots (though I’d size down one):

second ones look ridiculous. first ones better but i dont know if gold is your color.

Pretty sure silver isn’t my colour.

Yeh, I’m down to either the square or teardrop AOs in 55mm. Wife says the teardrops make me look mean, but I don’t really want to buy another pair of frames identical to what I’ve been wearing the past six years.

Moscots are indeed too big.
You look like Ralph Fiennes in the first pic. Hope your hair line lasts longer than his!
Randolphs are better made than AOs so check them out before you commit.

Hair but for the grace of God, I’m trying!

I’ve never had issue with my AOs, but I’ll try to find some REs for comparison. Since they have both made these to spec for military contracts, I wouldn’t expect them to be much different.

Ended up with the teardrop gold AO aviators, with a black lens and gold mirror. Not much different to the previous pair, but enough that at least I feel like it’s something new. The optometrist nailed the prescription though - my right eye has never seen better with glasses.

These Tom Fords look really nice and the width seems right for my face. Great price, but I don’t really need more sunglasses

The kids gave me some TF Snowden’s for F Day. The narrow fit has been out of stock most places for a while now and may be discontinued.
