Golf thread

I didn't think Sergio would be in the news. I haven't been following much since Tiger delayed his return.
 
Sergio's putting was not great. Too many left short.

I would like him to win a major but I don't think he is in good enough form for this masters.

Speith is coming along nicely and Rose seems confident too. Or maybe Adam Scott.

Charley Hoffman looks so different with long hair. He looks much older now. Like a lot of them he could do with losing a few pounds.

Great TV. Good sportsmanship between Garcia and Rose too.

4th surgery for Tiger Woods. His agent says this is the one that permanently fixes things - fusing his spine. What in God's name were the other three surgeries? He took a year off with the third one - he could have done this last time. What a waste of talent from this medical advice.
 
Not sure what was more depressing about seeing The Players Championship - Garcia all the way down there or McIlroy down there with him.
 
The young Korean winner is now off on military service for a few years. Or is that another tournament?
Japanese will not let Koreans play through in
UK. But Koreans let japs play through. Funny old world.

He's never been functional again since he was busted cheating.
 
That's not true. He made a top 10 in 2015 on his comeback. He then headed into the next tournament, which I believe was a major and killed his back again and withdrew.
 
There's no such thing as a full recovery after spinal injuries, there's always nerve damage and after surgery loss of agility which is going to play havoc with your handicap.

I don't follow golf, but what I meant is he never won another major. I always assumed the "its my back" excuse was always bullshit because of the timing.

He played 3 rounds in 2015 after killing his back and only managed 1 round in 2014. He won the Players which is not really a major but quite prestigious in 2013. Not sure you could say the guy was dodging anything when he made 142 consecutive cuts - a consistency which will not be broken by anyone alive today. He won a US Open in 2008 with a broken leg.

I want to add that his DUI, lounging around playing video games in 2014 and womanizing don't make him a monument to moral behaviour but golf is watched by men 90% of the time and most of them don't give a toss about that stuff as long as he performs.

I think it's more to do with what it did to him psychologically. I think the guy treasured his squeaky clean image, and it was destroyed in a night. Has to weigh on you. We can agree his performance was never the same since that night. And the DWI, while not proof, is often an indication he's troubled. Especially when you have the kind of coin to be driven anywhere at anytime, why take a risk?

Really? Point is that Tiger. who was ordained and all but guaranteed to surpass Nicklaus, will likely never do it. McIllroy & Spieth are not even germane to the conversation; maybe in 20 years but not right now.

Look at career major stats:

Nicklaus finished 2nd in majors 19 times with 48 top 3 finishes. Tiger? six 2nds and 24 top 3 finishes. How many times has Tiger won when not leading majors on Sunday? Nicklaus 8 times (Tiger = 0) Plus Tiger is a whinier little bitch than Nicklaus. Plus Tiger is called Tiger. Nuff said.

And why are you dating yourself when you have all of those ladyfriends?

I never said that Tiger Woods was worse than Jack Nicklaus especially vis-à-vis majors. I also know that Nicklaus won a lot of his majors late in his career which Tiger hasn't been able to do but that doesn't mean turning 40 he has no chance anymore.

I think the leading into the final round statistic is skewed. During Tiger's time, there weren't any credible competitors. Nicklaus played long enough he had to play against the next generation (i.e. Greg Norman).

Point is that Nicklaus still being the best golfer ever over a career would be evident to any student of the game

What pray tell did I say or are you just wanting me to say Nicklaus is the best ever?

I could say that Tiger is the best I've ever seen and single handedly saved the game from going into obsolescence in the 21st century. You could also say that Tiger's approach to play ruined the longevity of his career, and why couldn't he just take the easy shot and hit it on the fairway, play to the strengths of his ageing body, and that's why he'll never be productive enough in old age to compete with Nicklaus. All valid points.

...and if you think he moaned a lot, just look at the latest crop of 'stars'.

Nicklaus is the best ever. It's not a debate.

Tiger was never going to catch him, full stop. I told my old man 10 years ago before the train wreck started that Woods would never break the record, this was in the depths of everyone fellating El Tigre, because his swing wasn't sustainable. It was literally killing his body. Lo and behold, first it was the knee, then the back...

It was obvious to anyone watching. He was wasn't a long drive specialist. When he started trying to crank 300 yarders, the torque was unsustainable. These kids these day are gonna flame out for the same reason.

So Le Tigre says that his DUI was not alcohol related. I'm wondering if he's not just another pain killers addict.
 
Depends on which pain killers and how bad his back condition is. If you've got chronic back pain and nerve damage, up to morphine you're not going to get high. Only some relief from the pain. The T.r.a.modol's of this world only make you feel fuzzy, might work when combined with coke. Now, if you've exhausted morphine options and are in the Oxycodone stuff and Prince/Michael Jackson realms and have friendly doctor Robert's, then well, drugs with some resonance are quite possible.

It's all academic anyway, because with all those drugs you are expressly told not to drive. So his reputation for marketing sport's gear is soiled. At best he's cavalier and no longer a disciplined sportsman.

The second time I broke my back, I learned the joys of Demerol.

Whoa nelly that was some good stuff.
 
Oh yeah, Pethidine, never had it, but the name rings a bell....I will add that to my list of break-out in an emergency. Pretty much with pain relief it's finding the right drug, or right combination to give relief.

I went through a two week scrip in four days the first time, my advice is to tread lightly. Doctors are pretty loathe to prescribe it unless you find one of the pill peddlers because of it's potency. It's too much of a feel good for it's own good, not just a painkiller.

The pill form is slightly less hard hitting as the intravenous in the hospital thankfully. When the shot me up, I could feel it cruise up my arm, once it hit the base of the neck, game over. Sat bolt upright with a broken L4, collarbone and nose and begin profusely thanking everyone in earshot. They told me to lay down or they would strap me down... They tried to switch me to a local (Lidocane maybe, can't recall) in the middle of the night, wasn't having any of it.

The pills were pretty potent too though. Had two, drank a beer, and can vividly remember feeling the wave coming. Tried to make it to the car (we were around a bonfire), and got to the door handle, where I was able to open and promptly lost consciousness face down into the back seat. Woke up in the house on borderline shock from the pain as the drugs wore off. Was a bitch to get a couple pills out of the bottle my hands were shaking so bad.
 
Masters and The (British) Open are the majors that feature on terrestrial TV over here.

Keopka did well in The US Open even if some are saying the course was set up too easy. Suited big hitters and not too punishing?
 
It's the same majors here across the pond, but I guess I didn't fancy watching it because people I knew weren't on the leaderboard and I wasn't participating in any pools. It says here that Keopka matched McIlroy's record. In 6 years, Keopka will be....where McIlroy is now?
 
Strange end to The Open championship. Speith so far off the fairway at the 13th that he played from the practice ground but only dropped one shot. So three majors by the age of 23. Kuchar played well but Speith was fired up by escaping so lightly that he raised his game.

Only saw the highlights because BBC have lost live coverage.

For the first time they have the US PGA Live. But only for a year.
 
My father was remarking how it was raining and cold in Scotland. Actually, it's summer there too.
 
Dustin Johnson and Rory didn't even make the cut? Spieth finishes 35th. So much for consistency.
 
On BBC for the one and only time. Pictures courtesy of TNT. Poor coverage. One bloke - Kisner - held the lead for a long time then fell away on the last day. Japanese Matsuyama was looking good for a while too.

Long course and that Bermuda grass made life difficult on the greens and just off.
