Hair

Watching the White Lotus, I’m kinda inspired by Walter Goggins to grow my hair out and just accept the thinning, receding and greying with the length.

Since I just had a #2 fade, there’s plenty of time to change my mind

Eight months later and my wife is giving me not-so-subtle hints that it’s time to get a haircut

I tried extending my visits to my barber from 8 to 12 weeks. I might have done 13 because he moved to a new location and I wanted to give him some business on a Saturday where I know he would not get any foot traffic.

Anyway, the sheer amount of hair product I had to use to keep my hair tamed offset any monetary savings. There was a lot of tucking my hair behind my ear. I went through pucks of pomade so I switched to this petroleum product that was ruining my pillow cases and my shirt collars. More money spent laundering. Finally I bought a cheap 600ml squeeze bottle of gel and used 4/5 of that in two weeks.

I don't think it is worth the hassle to leave hair that long. I have a simple side part.

Why is the French crop and cappelli maranza so popular with young men?

The dermatologist convinced me to add a generic Finasteride to my daily minoxidil dose. If this affects my boners I will be so pissed off.

Usually you have to convince the dermatologist to add a prostate drug to your regimen.

It will stop shedding in a week or two. I don’t know how much you shed when you shower but that was the first indicator. Depending on how far along your bald areas are it will start regrowth. If you had weaker hairs it will come back stronger and not wispy. But hair growth cycles can take months so you won’t really know how much you can achieve until one year out.

As for side effects. I don’t know. That depends on the person. I had testicular pain the first 48 hours and then it went away. I do have to say that I am like a woman who gave birth now when it comes to taking a piss. One cup of coffee and I know I am hitting the toilet in an hour. I used to drink 6 pints sitting at the bar without having to go. A former staffer called me a camel.

I did a test of my male and female hormones as a baseline in case it buggered anything up. (Bioavailable Testosterone, DHT, Estradiol (E2), FSH, SHBG, LH, Prolactin, TSH, Aldosterone). I read some men online had bad reactions and then were injecting hormones to achieve a balance again. As for sex drive and libido - well I was already not a porn star before taking it. And I reckon it declined about the same as if I didn’t take it due to age. I didn’t do a baseline of my PSA before so that might be worth it so you know your future low PSA results aren’t true and you need to multiply by a factor.

I’m not a Norwood hair loss person so no self respecting hair transplant guy would transplant into a diffuse loss patient. I was probably in between the third and fourth head on the right. After a few years I know where the bad parts are and I am probably more like the first head on the left. I still use a bit of concealer and my friend’s 8 year old asks why I am styling so aggressively if I have no hair but to most adults I look okay now. I can now look for a transplant but I accepted men shouldn’t look like Rob Lowe or Brad Pitt when they age.

I don’t think your loss is as aggressive as mine and if you are just trying to avoid a Norwood 4 and above look maybe a transplant would be more effective.

One weird thing that happened is my hair came in the front temple where it goes down to sideburns. I didn’t expect that and my balding spot in the back disappeared. I had no hopes for the crown but it was a bonus and it retained the swirl my brother’s son inherited.

Oh. You can drop it but the half life can be pretty long. You need I think 21 days or so to clear out of your system. Don’t donate blood. And probably not a problem for you but don’t let pregnant women handle the pills.

Thanks Fwiffs, I appreciate your detailed and thoughtful response.

Honestly, my commitment to this is pretty low. If it’s just popping a couple of pills that are free on insurance, I’ll give it a shot. But I don’t really care enough to be willing to put up with any side-effects. I’ve had no issues with the minoxidil these past six months, so we’ll see what adding this extra one will do.

My testicle did indeed feel like I’d taken a knee for a few days after starting Fin, but all good now.

Fwiffo Fwiffo have you ever used hair fibre? My barber suggested it, but it sounds way too fussy and too much effort to daily use.

Hair fibre like Toppik or Caboki? I did after I started topical minoxidil and before finasteride.

I had diffuse hair loss so it helped give the illusion my hair was more full. You saw less scalp. I usually put it on after I finish styling. Then I put hairspray to set everything.

As I lost more hair, though, it became harder and harder to cover things up. The best way to use fibre is if you have some hair and the fibre just sits in between the surviving hairs on the scalp or it clings on to some hair. If you don't have hair in that area it's very hard to get a natural effect. Ignore all the photographs of the people who have a bald crown because in order to achieve that effect you need to sprinkle 1/5 of a bottle on it and it won't look 3D because the fibre is only so long.

Since I used finasteride for a few years I find myself using less and less because my hair grew back in. I sometimes forget now and just go out. I have a side part so I can just move my part a little bit to cover it up or not style upwards so aggressively.

For you - why would you use it? It won't fill in receding corners. You said your whole hairline is receding slowly. It will help if someone looked at you and you styled your hair up or they look down on your head from above and you're thinning. You can use it to cover it up. Are you losing hair that way though?

A few things about fibre: It's lightweight. Don't let women brush their hand through your hair. In fact when you use it for a few years you will just instinctively move your head away from people touching it. They'll get the fibre on them. If you hairsprayed it down you can have someone pat you on the head but if they start running fingers through it chances their hands will pick it up. If you are applying too much, you need use a dry towel and brush your forehead. Sometimes it will fall there when applying and you look like a homeless person.

You will also develop natural instincts not to jump into water and swim. You will also have natural instincts to run and hide when there's a rainstorm. With hairspray, some light drizzle is okay but too much will basically run the fibre out of your hair making your sparse areas even more sparse. Worst case people see streaks of fibre coming down your face. If you do get stuck in a rain storm the best thing to do is not touch your hair and just let it dry naturally.

Too much fibre or not using hairspray after fibre to set it also creates issues on pillow cases. You will also wear a cap when you go to the dentist or you get a facial or massage or anywhere where your head might rest on an area. I once had a hygienist who had to change her ...apron?...because she was vigorously massaging my hair and face with her breast when doing hand scaling.

Finally you'll probably need a cloth to wipe down your sink after styling your hair. Chances are things that look like residue from an electric shaver will accumulate. I used Toppik in the beginning but the dark colours turn green after it stays on your hair past 24 hours. It's not a problem for me anymore since I work out every day so I rinse or wash my hair every day and I just reapply everything after. I switched to Caboki because of that.

For sure the TV show people used fibre for him as a concealer. Obviously blow dry to give it more volume and instead of foolishly trying to comb everything straight up try to have a bit of a comb over.

Thanks for that. My barber suggested it mainly for volume. I think I’ll just get the powder he recommended.

Wash it out before you go for a haircut.

You should be shedding less after a week or so (depending if you are in a shed cycle already). But it takes time to see the full effect. I waited at least 3 months to see small regrowth. A year really to see if it is making significant differences. It is tempting to keep taking photographs like the people online in the beginning though.

I also do Nizoral. That is the last of what the online intelligentsia call the big three.

Also as I mentioned before. I am no longer a camel and often need to run to the washroom now like a woman who has had kids.

Does that make your hair really dry?

Not me. It was meant to reduce any signs of inflammation since inflamed follicles aren't healthy follicles.

I don't think it will lead to regrowth alone unless you're losing hair solely from a fungal infection.

My hair is normally pretty dry, so I think I’ll pass on that heavy duty shampoo

Number one: Use it on places where you already have long(ish) hair but it's sparse. It sticks to existing hair. You're trying to have the concealer lightly fall on the remaining hair and a little bit of the scalp. If you wanted the whole scalp coloured, just tattoo your head (scalp micropigmentation)

Number two, start from the back of your hair loss area and shake once or twice. Don't try to add so much as if you have no loss at all. Once you move up to your hair line, stop a few cm before it. Don't bother trying to fill in your hair line or you end up like that guy.

Like I said, it will give the illusion to people over 30cm away that it's fuller so you don't end up like Pierce Bronsan circa 2026.

Your 6 year daughter without a filter will call you out and your 22 year old girlfriend will know.

If it's your crown - don't bother. Even Jeremy Piven gave up and just wore a hair piece that covered the crown. What you put in on a large bald crown area won't look 3D because the fibres don't stand up.

And ignore all the advertisements that come with your concealer because it's not realistic to fill in a NW3 and look like Rob Lowe or a bald crown.
