Household Appliances

Major appliances are a crap shoot at best these days. When we added on a suite for my mother-in-law, we bought Maytag (Whirlpool). The appliances outlived her. No blips in almost 5 years, which sadly is top performance these days.

Would not waste my piss on Electrolux. Fridge & range were both garbage.

From the high-end side, I would buy SubZero & Wolf again in a heartbeat, but I don't think you are looking at this level of appliances.
don't i know it. maytag seems to be a crapshoot as well. at least down here, the styling is EXACTLY the same as whirlpool and i don't know how to figure out what the differences are. reliability reports are all over the fucking place as well.
Holy shit! 10k for a refrigerator what the fuck
yeah, no.
Yeah, I think I have an Amana or something. It's a bifurcated market, so if you are not buying top end, just go as cheap as you want.

I can't remember the cutesy Canadian-made brand that relatives have but it seems to be holding up. The spendier brands (not just models) tend to at least have some durability, if not reliability, and a parts supply and customer service department that doesn't vanish.
amana is the cheap whirlpool dogshit. no thanks.
that's one of the problems with whirlpool. there seems to be little to no differentiation in quality between the lines.

I have had good luck with LG for washer and dryer. But if that isn't an option, I've gone with Liebherr for my fridge as they are one of the only built in manufacturers. I've been happy with it but they can be tough to find someone to work on them if something goes awry. Feature wise they are in the Sub-Zero range, but a little easier on the wallet. I think Viking bought a fridge manufacturer to?
we have a front loader lg washer and dryer. they are the biggest pieces of shit on earth. each has been repaired 4 times or more and i've gotten lg to buy back both of them. after MUCH time on the phone. we're going to sell them and get Speed Queen units.

Aw crap, our LG front-loaders aren't terrible, but we bought them from a scratch-and-dent guy maybe 6 years ago and they work as advertised. But it took a few tries to get good ones.our fridge is some professional-style stainless jobbie - it's worked okay. Broke one of the drawers in our move 9 years ago but it still works fine. Frigidaire, that's the brand. Doesn't suck, fortunately.

Plan Q - look for used restaurant equipment, perhaps a local place has taken in a trade? Could be extra to deal with it and get it set up but if you don't want the hassles, that might not be a terrible idea

With the consolidation of the appliance manufacturers and all these brands coming out of the same factory I don't think you can do any better than getting the best price with the best warrenty with the best service and crossing your fingers.

Reviews are variable because there is no consistency across a line or lines. Quality control sucks.

If the repair techs haven't mentioned it, standing with the door open while devouring the contents of a refrigerator somewhat exceeds normal usage. Adjusting technique may lead to increased longevity.

Another problem - all the warranties are only 1 year. You basically have to buy an extended warranty now just to cover your bases.

Probably worth it. How much are they down there?

Not sure how Sears is in the USA for customer service. They sell all the same brands and rebranded
Kenmore. But they do have great warrenty and post warrenty service too. At least here.

Bummer, mine have been pretty solid. My Dad has a set too. No idea about their fridges though.

So, I'm unfortunately back at this. Need a refrigerator and range after our Samsung shit has proven to be shit. We're not buying anything LG or Samsung or Frigidaire. Whirlpool and GE reviews seem to be mostly fake, and the ones that aren't report LOTS of issues, so I honestly don't know where to turn. Any Americans got opinions on what brands are worthwhile? doghouse doghouse MFDoom MFDoom Thruth Thruth COG Peak Jan Libourel Jan Libourel I need to source some user reviews on these things.

For refrigerators, my wife is a fan of Sub-Zero. Ours gave pretty good service for 23 years. It was still functional, but my wife decided to get a new one. This was only a couple of years ago, so naturally it's still doing fine--entirely satisfactory.
When she was remodeling her kitchen about five years (I say "she" and "her" because I was only a marginal player in the whole business!), her son located her a second-hand Viking range at a good price. She was very proud of it, but the thing has given us quite a few problems, which probably accounts for the "good" price.

New toy. Too early to say if it is worth the money, but definitely cool.

I bought my mom a Samsung washer during memorial day weekend, and so far she has been pretty happy with its performance. No vibration technology has been great.

I would say Subzero refrigerators are good if you are willing to spend the dough. I saw some model homes recently in the richer part of Kansas and most of them had this brand on display.

I've never particularly understood the point. Most thermostats are programmable already and many have wifi and an app. My Honeywell allows me to adjust the temp from my phone. Unless you're running an Air BnB, why do you need so much control all the time everywhere you go?

The self-learning feature is the big selling point, with promises to cut bills by 10-15%. You don't need to program it, it learns when you get home and when you leave as well as typical weather patterns.

So far I'll say that it is a cool gadget, but I won't say it's worthwhile until I test how good it is at learning and adapting.

Update: the self learning feature uses a combination of motion detection and iPhone location to figure out when you are home and in which rooms to then look for patterns.

Still too early to say if this degree of precision is really better then a programmable thermostat. But it is working. Also haven't seen enough power bills to say if it is worth the expense.

Grand Potentate Grand Potentate what a good brand/model that is both energy efficient and able to 'push' a lot of air for ceiling fans?
ceiling fans, on the low end, are a bit of a mixed bag. Hunter is the major player and they manufacture for both Home Depot and Lowes. You're looking for a few different features - CFM, lighting, noise, and controls. I've installed probably 100 fans and would say they're a completely mixed bag and reliability rates are ALL over the place, so I'd focus more on features and looks rather than brand name. If you give me a few models I can help you narrow it down.

I don't even know where to start lol. I saw a couple by hunters. They are going to be installed in rooms.

do you need lights in them? remote controls? color? design?

stick with 52" size to make it easier.
I don't care about remote, yes to light. and color i don't care either

Recommend a mid-price set of pots and pans that are durable, safe and easily cleaned? Weight not an issue.

the big set is currently $50 off.

Tramotina are good and solid too. Cephalon is a bit better I think.

Too bad they don't sell Paderno in America (the Canadian cookware company). Good solid shit.

Zwilling-Henkel on sale or at Costco is decent.

I avoid non stick - they are hard to clean and you cant use metal tools. Plus they are NOT REALLY NON STICK.

They are do a nice non-stick that is non-poisonous for LelandJ LelandJ

Ironically most of the new teflon-free "ceramic" non-stick pans have arsenic and lead in the coatings! No off-gassing but serious leaching!!

There only three safe options, stainless, cast iron, and unglazed pure ceramic which is crazy expensive.

You hit the nail on the head with CRAZY

Copper for the win. More effort to clean but wonderful metal for cooking with.

unglazed pure ceramic
also, since you're now working in the field of material science, is there a difference between the cooking applications between glazed and unglazed ceramic? and what difference would impurities in the ceramic make in the application of food and heat?

Unglazed, right, surface impurities to collect food and debris so bacteria can grow. But we don't want glazed because of da lead

I haven't washed my John Deere coffee mug for 2 years. No word of a lie.

So I left it for the last 6 weeks and there had been a couple of mm's of coffee in it. When i looked at it today there were a couple of floating mould islands. Washed it. Refilled it. Drank it.

Thank God it is not aluminum. But I won't sleep tonight because it is glazed.

thruth - do you have International Roast and Pablo Instant coffee over there?

There is all kind of instant dreck here. When I was hanging out in the jungle in Bolivia, my friends would serve Maxwell house instant with Coffeemate. Stir both set of powders together into a mug and add hot water. They thought it was heaven. Fucking hillbilly's. Jajajja. Mejor sabor!

Tiene Maxwell House a Canada, Gerry? Si, Don Memo, Pero siempre los pobres DRINK THAT SHIT!

Ja no, no me gusta el sabor de mierde. Pero, as si es en el parque Isiboro y Secure.

Clearly cafe con leche was too much to ask for
