Household Appliances

also, since you're now working in the field of material science, is there a difference between the cooking applications between glazed and unglazed ceramic? and what difference would impurities in the ceramic make in the application of food and heat?

I don't think glazing in itself is always bad but if it's made in China doubt you could ever trust.

You hit the nail on the head with CRAZY

Copper for the win. More effort to clean but wonderful metal for cooking with.

Never ever ever ever buy copper except for a couple specialty pieces if you must. You will hate yourself when you are trying to clean it. The best thing by far is a copper core stainless item.

Cast is great too, but not for everyone. I use mine a ton.

I know. Cleaning is a bitch. Second the copper core. Also use cast a lot. The Missus loves Le Creuset

Tri-ply stainless with a coating not good?

And diamonds!

If I non-stick to plan, the 10 peace is $400 right now with sale and coupon.

Skip the coating.

If you want really non stick, seasoned cast is as good as it gets. But for daily beaters, stainless is where it's at, learn proper heat for what you are trying to do and you won't have a problem with sticking. Technique is the most important part.

There are some good Prime Day deals on those little cleaning robots today. Anyone have any suggestions on brands or models? iRobot or Roborock?

Do you need vacuuming and mopping or just mopping?

I found this channel to be helpful:

I’ve seen better deals around. The Roborock eBay store often runs great deals on refurbs. Make sure you read reviews about the warranty process. iRobot is notoriously shitty when it comes to customer service.

The landlord bought a new Frigidaire (aka Electro Lux) dishwasher about $1000 CAD. To my surprise when I was looking for the serial number it's made in Italy. I didn't even know Italy makes dishwashers.

After replacing the thermistor and some shield evaporator block the fridge kind of worked but was still 3c or slightly above at the outer edges even at the recommended chill setting. Now after a few months and autumn settling in, it's hitting 0c at the top near the freezer and 1c or 2c at the furthest reaches. Freezer seems stocked with roughly the same amount of food so I know it's not a ventilation thing.

I'm hoping besides the toilet in the second bathroom, and the oven that nothing else blows up in this rental.

Talk to the landlord about gettting it repaired again or fixed?

What are the symptoms? After over a 5 fridges in a decade+ here I’m pretty good with their repairs.

This year I replaced the over the range microwave + vent/hood. He replaced the dishwasher. I paid for the three visits from two handymen + parts for the fridge. He replaced the fridge in 2019. Last year I replaced the toilet in the master bedroom. I guess you could say he technically owes me one if we're keeping tabs.

The original problem was it would turn on with a compressor sound but wouldn't stay on unless you opened the door again to trigger cooling. The freezer was also above 0c. This was with the fridge on maximum setting. The fridge was hitting 10c-14c with frequent door opening at the perimeter and the coldest part at the top next to the vent with the freezer was at best 5c - overnight if you didn't touch it.

The first repair guy (who was the microwave guy) replaced the shield evaporator block with a part he had on hand. The coils looked pretty clean. He said if it still doesn't work he needs to go pick up the thermistor. The freezer started working but the fridge was still 5-10c even if you don't disturb it overnight. He came back and replaced the thermistor underneath the fridge light and said I really shouldn't need to even move the dial to the Recommended setting.

After he left I'm still getting high temperatures. The second guy came and did something I saw on YouTube which is to take apart the back panel in the freezer and he used a blowdryer to melt all the ice that accumulated. He told me to drop the top shelf lower so there's more area for the cold air to flow so the fridge won't think it's already cold and turn off. Now the outer perimeter drops to about 5c and the coldest part at the top is able to get to 3c on the Recommended setting.

I didn't die of food poisoning but since we no longer have 20c weather this past week I saw the fridge is able to hit 0c at the top now which I haven't seen since I stuck a thermometer in there. The second guy told me the only other thing to replace is the compressor. If that was the case he advised me to buy a new fridge.

Unless the realtors and landlords are using old photographs I see a lot of people still running the old mid 2000s GE stuff that came with the condo. The only GE I have left is the oven now.

Not technically. He ACTUALLY owes you because those are his responsibilities.

Also, refrigerators only come with a 1 year warranty for a reason these days.

He owes a working appliance. Doesn't necessarily mean it's new or even good. Plus since coronavirus we haven't had signed lease agreements. He just shows up and I hand him a bunch of post dated cheques. I'm below the market rate for this area and it's technically under rent control unless he does renovations or moves in (unlikely, he has a house) so it's tough to leave.

Anyone bought a washing machine lately? Our old one just crapped out and Mrs DB does a lot of washing.

That’s like twice what I was hoping to pay. Is it really that much better/ more reliable than getting another LG? The one that just died gave us 15 good years.
Listen to me very clearly - this is going to be the single best piece of advice I EVER give you: Do not, on pain of death, buy an LG appliance of ANY kind. Or Samsung for that matter.

While the Speed queen is roughly twice the price, it is:

-Made in America
-Has an old school agitator (very very difficult to find on the market in a top loader)
-Comes with a 5 year warranty
-Has EXCELLENT customer service in the USA
-Can be repaired and can get parts for it.

Now the price is just an estimated MSRP and you can likely save a few bucks on a combo set with the dryer which I would also recommend. Start calling around authorized dealers in your area. I just checked on their website and you're in luck, there are about 25 different retailers there. I had to go down to Miami to get one. When I bought years ago it was roughly half the price and I saved money by buying the combo set and paying cash. I guarantee you can do the same if you spend some time and shop around.

That is probably the #1 thing to look for. Everything else is more or less designed to break down as soon as legally possible.
Not just that. Here in the US the Korean manufacturers (LG & Samsung) generally have no available local stock on parts. This means it can be 3-4 weeks sometimes before you can get parts in to even make the repair. I know this from first hand experience and you can read thousands of reviews on the internet about it.

If the appliance is only half the price, then waiting a few weeks is not too bad, is it? I was thinking more about stuff you actually can't repair, which seems to abound.

a: they're not half the price, they're just as expensive (speed queen aside)
b: what happens if your washing machine motor dies or your fridge compressor or motherboard goes down???
b1: ask me how I know...
