When the Japanese Prime Minister said all options were being considered, what pray tell were the options for a country whose army is called the self defence force? I reckon their economy needs the $200M too.
 
The Japanese do not pay terrorists plus there is a lot of thought being expressed that the hostages deserve their fate because they did not have to be there. Especially the dumbfuck, failed businessman, warlover, suddenly a security contractor and now headless goombah. The journalist, dumbfuck number 2 went to try and get headless dumbfuck 1 released. How's that working for ya? At least ISIS no longer wants money. They want some terror bitch who failed to detonate during a husband and wife suicide bombing at a wedding.

Depending on which list you look at, Japan has either the 5th, 7th or 8th largest defence budget in the world. Historically, Japan has spent only 1% of GDP on defence, but when your economy is the second (now third) largest in the world, 1% adds up to quite a large amount. Japan builds its own planes, under license from companies like McDonnell Douglas (as Mitsubishi makes a version of the F-15, for example) and Japan also builds its own ships and submarines.
 
I never doubted their economic prowess. I know they have substantial funds (that ought to be directed at their economy which has languished since the 1980s) but they can't project any of their military power.

I'm not saying a middling nation like my own is any better but I recall that was the official statement from their government that all options were being considered: I'm not entirely sure they have cozy relations with any Middle East nation that could influence ISIS.

Saying we can do nothing deflates morale but if I were their public relations I'd just recycle the we don't bow to terror and we're against terrorist speech.

Really, I have more in common with even "radical" Islam than the "global plantation of the one world government under the elite" crowd. The alcohol thing and the opposition to western garb and haircuts give me pause, but I'm cool with most of the rest.

Well, to be fair, they could easily have been Druze, Maronite Christian, Greek Orthodox, Catholic or even Jewish or Baha'i, as Lebanon was (and still is) a diverse country.

The dudes I'm referencing were strait up Arab. They were friends with people who called themselves "Persians", who I later came to learn are just regular ol' Iranians.
 
Lebanese people who are Druze, Maronite Christian, Greek Orthodox, Catholic or Baha'i still look "Arab". You can't tell what religion a person is by their appearance, unless they have earlocks, or they're wearing a burka or religious robes. There are also Iranians who aren't Muslim, although admittedly there aren't that many of them, particularly since 1979.

However, even if they were Muslim, that's not surprising as there are plenty of religious hypocrites of all stripes. I've known Christians who have committed heinous crimes, and I've got some Jewish friends who eat pork.

Well, they had Arab names. I take your point, and didn't know some of this, but these dudes were Muslim.
 
Most Persians are Muslim only in name. Like any society, there are people who are devout and people who aren't. Their government is devout and conservative, but most of the people aren't. If the revolution did not happen, more part time Muslims in Iran would be other faiths (Zoroaster, Christian, Jewish) or atheist.

Anyway, I'm reminded by my classical studies when the middle Roman Empire flip flopped between paganism and Christianity. People didn't experience conversions of their soul every time the national faith changed. Most people just observe whatever faith is the predominant one because it's the easiest way to get a job, accumulate wealth and not be ostracized.

That said, Lebanon is a cess pool of very different religions but that's what makes it so exotic.
