It's always five o'clock somewhere

Nice wine breathing for anniversary dinner, but I’m starting with some Lunar New Year Buddha beer.

e. in other alcoholic news, I have signed up as a commercial customer with various wholesalers and importers, in order to get some limited rums for a reasonable price (or at least at all).
Received my accounts, looks like that was a good idea. At first glance, some interesting products about 20-30% below retail. Thinking about buying some Caroni, e.g. a few bottles of the Caroni Navy from Velier. Too late for the Hampden I was looking for, seems to be sold out at the importer, only retail left. Maybe I can get a hold of the 2021 edition in a year.

Drank well over half a liter bottle of JW Red on Saturday. It was over 11 hours and mixed with Bundaberg diet ginger beer.

Long time since I’ve drank that much whisky and I wouldn’t recommend it. I was lucky to get away with only a mild hangover and very grey looking face.

Bundaberg ginger beer and Bundaberg rum with lime (aka a dark and stormy) is a classic Queensland cocktail.

I never see Bundaberg here in Canada, I've heard the sodas are quite good but the rum is awful, can you confirm?

Bundy is a good rum. Not in the same league as some of the delights from the islands, but a perfectly acceptable mixer.

It's a bit of an acquired taste, quite unusual and industrial, but not necessarily in a bad way.

I've not seen it for quite a few months, the sodas are available in some of supermarkets now and are good.

Hoping to try this particular style of sherry soon, maybe even tomorrow, one the local shops has a bottle. PX casks are used by some scotch distillers to finish their spirits.
Apparently PX is viscous and sickly sweet and ought to be poured over vanilla ice cream or paired with blue cheese and crackers.

Oloroso sherry is next.

Pedro Ximenez sherry is Extremely sweet. That said, I have just had a nice Chilean Pedro Ximenez wine from Lidl @£3.19. It is nice and fruity and citrus. They use it for Pisco brandy-style spirit in South America.

If you are trying sherry, I recommend Lustau Almacenista offerings. Lustau East India style sherry is sound, as is Matusalem. Unfortunately, Lustau bodega was not open for visitors when I was in Jerez, so I just did Gonzalez Byass instead.

Otherwise decent fino or manzanilla works well.

One bonus is you are not paying top dollar for sherry.

Another bonus is there is no blather about sherry vintage either.

Not a big sherry fan on account of the general over bearing sweetness. Much prefer Madeira in that aperitif fortified wine style.

Got my month's supply of South African wines and rumbullion in. Was going to get Martel's Cordon Bleu, but decided to economize and got a bottle of Vaghi Extra ''Sublime'' armagnac and Chateau du Breuil 20 year old calvados which ended up being a bit more expensive. But I've double the quantity.

Currently reading about the ongoing SNP and Alex Salmond saga in The Spectator and there is a link to an article on his pink champagne drinking before interviews, something to do with toasting his favourite football club.

It just so happens that I am in possession of some top-notch scientific research, that I happened to participate in as expert non-participant witness honestly not partaking, but it has been tested to proof: a bottle of pink champagne is the perfect bed for a dose of MDMA. That would also explain his presenting Russia Today without any self-awareness.

With the pandemic restricting outdoor endeavors, what do you all do when you get drunk?
Endeavour not to get drunk these days. I like alcohol as a food enhancer: aperitif, wine with dinner and then a digestif. Generally will listen to music before and after dinner.

Did get drunk last Saturday though and ended-up watching the Victoria Woods special on BBC 2 in a whisky haze. Doesn't rock my world anymore. Hadn't done that for quite sometime.

Notice when I go back to the UK, people have a lot more stamina than me when it comes to full-on beer sessions and drinking long into the night.

Recently, the weather here is a bit more mild so I had a pipe smoke with my brother and a serving of Appleton 12 and Knob Creek.

Realised I had over done it on the serious robust reds, so I needed a bit of a cushion of more table style wines. Decided to order alcohol online for the first time, as I know the full-range is on line at this wine merchant. Plus free delivery in The Hague area if you spend over €35.

Arrived today, the day after ordering. What a great way to order booze. 12 bottles to your door step. No hassle at all. I'll do that next month too. I don't need the advice/BS of some wine merchant, I can do all my own research. Good enough.

Talking shit, basically? What do you mean, what do you do?

I do drink a bit more alone since before, but that's actually nice because I can drink good stuff you can hardly get otherwise or else only for ridiculous restaurant prices. But otherwise it is identical, just less and only in private instead of public spaces. Things are a bit more quiet maybe, less dancing, yelling and general mayhem because crowds are smaller of course.

For other people, except for a few quiet weeks over the winter due to rain/cold, they seem to just meet outside, drink, play music, dance, barbecue etc. there are many places here where there are hundreds of people sitting/standing around in groups just like they would in bars etc. otherwise.

If it's late and indoors, I tend to go on YouTube searches for old nostalgic movies or music videos. Then I stream the most mundane movie in the background. If it's not too cold or dark out I will go for an hour long or more walk and smoke half a pack. I tend to stop by but not buy anything in grocery stores or pharmacies because those are the only places that are open.

I never used to drink much at home but I'm easily sinking 3 or 4 bottles of wine and a bottle of brown in 4 days. Then I stop till Thursday and I start again.

Everyone's drinking more, as there is a dark suspicion that all of this is just prelude of something more sinister. If we're not careful, the so called Climate Emergency will be used to continue lock downs and ultimately freedoms of association and usher in the Great Reset. Which is a toxic solution to the human condition. We must resist.

Anyway, as part of my losing some inches on the belly, I'm giving up all alcohol except wine with dinner. For a short period I hope. I will be biking as well, a bit earlier than normal in the season. They say dieting is 70% food and 30% exercise. For me, without exercise it doesn't work at all.

You use a lot of mixers. Just drink hard liquor straight.

That said I left autumn having lost most of that initial quarantine weight. Then even walking 50km plus per week in the winter I have been growing again.

I'd rather give up food than alcohol.

My A1C came back a little high this year. I’m slim and I exercise a lot, so the only option is to cut carbs or alcohol intake. Bye carbs!

As it happens, I've woken up and having a Calvados as late night cap. It tastes great the Chateau du Breuil 20 year old XO.

Pretty much gone off hard liquor straight, other than as a digestif. I only drink diet mixers. Avoid beer as much as possible.

All my blood tests have been good of late, with exception of low vitamin D. But a couple of blood pressure tests have been quite high. But after driving which never fails to give stress. Also after strong coffee.

Gotta' get out on the bike. But when it's below 10C and the wind is blowing off the North Sea, it's not that pleasant. Back home, I would just go across the border and on those windless winter days go up to the top Moel Famau. That will keep you fit. Apparently mobbed out during the lock downs.

Started doing weights again last week, if I had the disciple I would do those Les Mills routines. My wife has the subscription and in a lock down, it's a good option.

Is your doctor smoking meth? Those are fantastic numbers.

5.6 is on the high end of normal, isn’t it? I’m not too worried. I don’t eat much sugar at all, though I do have some carbs (muesli for breakfast, sandwich for lunch and a couple of beers in the evening is typical).

If my Dr was smoking meth, I’d be asking for a hit for damn skippy.

no not really. the baseline cutoff is 5.7 but even anything up to about 6.0 is perfectly fine. the baseline cutoff for glucose is 80 with anything up to around 90 being relatively fine as well. these numbers of yours are perfect.

Those numbers are indeed nothing to worry about. As I am sure, you are aware when those tests were taken, makes a big difference. Like Dropbear, I work out regularly, enough, nowhere or as in shape as Dropbear Dropbear , and in the past I found those two numbers and other markers to be way off when I take em.

As a rule now, I take said tests, 12 hours after I go to bed (so roughly after a twelve hour fast) and no workouts before. That standardisation gives a much better data.

I remember working out two hours before a test and my Hba1C WAS ABOUT 6.5 and morning glucose was 85 . The same tests two weeks later and A1c was about 4.2 and morning glucose was 60. Drastic readings from just over two weeks which shouldn't be possible.

Which is why standardisation and in context matters.

Thank you both. I’ll put it down to a morning run and not fasting for a full 12hrs then.

I am going to try harder to stick to two drinks a night. When I hit three, it does affect my sleep a bit.

That Oloroso has taken some getting used to, I am still not quite there. I will be skipping to PX Sherry, $30 for a bottle of sugar syrup, no thanks.
I am thinking about some of the lower tier bourbons or even trying Jamesons.

Sherry is too sugary for modern consumption. I'm surprised anyone can withstand it. Instant hyper-tension and diabetes.

Jamesons is very clean tasting. The IPA Cask Edition with soda water is very good IMCO.

Armagnac is wonderful. I recommend Baron de Signonac.
