Music Of The Moment

Fuck Buttons, King Creosote & Jon Hopkins, and some Django Django whilst ironing my shirts. I'd post the links, but I haven't access to You, Tube(!) here in the jolly old PRC.

The Helio Sequence has a new album in May. Saw them live last year, they're quite good. Just a 2 man act, guitar and drums. The drummer especially.

I am not ashamed to say I wore my hair like this in the 90's.

Freddy Koella plays a mean guitar and did it wilt Willy for about a dozen years.

The hair - which one the first MUSUG or the second ?

Mine was like the first in the 70s - only not as short!

Truly shows what a great artist Willy was. I was so sad when he died - he was someone I wanted to see live before I shuffle off.

He can easily stand alongside Van, at Vans peak, for soul/R&B improvisation and delivering an accessible pop sensibility package even at times. But referencing cajun, New Orleans, Jazz, blues and back to European roots, and always respectful of the audience.

Van for all his whingeing had a much better run than Willy at almost any stage. The calibre of musicians that Willy was always able to attract to his bands is testament to his enormous talent and the respect he was held in by those who matter. Willy consumed much substances but unlike say George Jones, he always seems to deliver onstage and wrote wonderful songs.

The difference is that Willy was still giving it his all, keeping it fresh and real right up until he died whereas Van has gone through periods of phoning it all in - deadpan. . But when they both get into the zone live and stretch it out with the band its a truly transcendental experience - even for a listener years later.

Not to mention that Willy has more sartorial style sass and street cred in his little finger than any forum poster.

Smoking, looking cool and delivering the goods onstage - you don't see that anymore.

Just look at this. From 1985.

In daylight and a shitty festival even. He delivers. Look at the clothes. Can I remind you its 1985!

Thats how you wear a hat.

Watch when he undoes the jacket at around 2.16. Then eventually takes it off.

And just wait till he dances at the end.

Now that is what you call cool. What do any of the current crop know.

Look at the high rise trousers, the no break narrow trousers. A tie onstage - worn well - not ironically. And a proper shirt with room to move not a skin tight monstrosity.

Can I remind you this was 1985.

This cat knew what he was doing.

And all this while looking like a man not a boy. A man who means business.

Vale Willy - and a huge thanks from me - you were are magnificent.

Ha The Hunters Throw Your Arms Around Me is like an Australian anthem. Anyone can get drunk and sing it. I didn't know it had made it outside our shores.

not sure how much exposure it got in North America but i remember it as a single only release which we could only get on import then it was on Human Frailty a couple of years later.

After hearing the Roy Orbison in the new Tom Hardy movie I had to listen to my favorite Roy song

Saw these guys live last Thursday down at the opening night for the Brooklyn Bridge dance party. Good stuff:

One of my favorite "underground" artists. She is a very talented writer/guitar player. Love her "East Side Story" album from years ago(that's how I was put on to her.)
