Shaving, Skin, and Body Care

I don't do a fucking thing. I have 6/10 thickness beard. A few minutes in a hot shower and some soap works a charm. I haven't had a cut in 2 years probably. And I change the razor when the fucker rusts. Gillette can suck my ass with those razor prices.

Sorry, all respect, but there is douchery at foot here.
Look, Gillette is a racket, but that doesn't mean that all people who want a more luxurious shave, or need a little more help to get a proper shave, are all just pissing their money down the fucking drain.

I like a luxurious blow job, bottle of wine, dress shirt and pair of shoes. A luxurious desk chair too. A fucking shave? It's a very simple utilitarian act. If you want luxury, download reruns of Lifestyles of the Rick and Famous. Shaving will never be more than cutting hair from your face. No Olympic event or team sport I am aware of.

Moisture.

I'm open to either.
Well, most moisturizers are going to be on the creamier side. It just depends on whether you like an actual cream/lotion or a liquid based product.

Dr. Harris Arlington has been around forever and is well regarded:

Geo F. Trumper's Coral Skin Food is another classic:

Speick makes both a liquid and a cream that seem to be popular amongst the budget/quality set:

Pre de Provence makes a great cream that's like a L'Occitane knock off for $15:

L'Occitane's Cade balm is extremely popular:

Here is Thruth's Baxter of California:

I have used everything on this list save for the Speick. Currently using the Pre de Provence.

Do you wear fragrance? Why pick a $130 fragrance over a $30 fragrance? Because you like it. Some people like to spend money on this shit. Don't make me get into this dumbass argument we've had 1000 times before.

Truefitt & Hill Ultimate pre-shave oil is great.

I only use oil, too, and it's great. I find that it's better for my skin than foam, that I get a good shave, and that my face feels better afterwards.

I like Baxter of California After Shave Balm. No alcohol. Moisturizes. Doesn't make you smell like a hoor

I use this same after shave. I love the sensation it gives to the skin.

I was shaving first and then taking a bath but I have switched it, so that the heat of the shower can moisturaize my skin. I leave the brush in hot water. Then apply the soap to the brush and make the "lather" or that stuff - I forgot how it's called - to make some nice kinda foam. I love my morning routine.

I think you want the hair follicle to swell up with moisture and heat the same as the brush holds more water when left to soak.
It's important to be up and about for a good fifteen minutes or so before getting out of bed to your fluid settle and your face de-puffs, retracting from the hair a bit.

No. Not unless it was a gift. I don't disagree that some people like to wear it, but also don't give me the line that somehow aftershave is anything other than repackaged cologne.

You could have seamlessly posted this in a chick forum.

I have lots and lots of different shaving stuff, 30 soaps etc
Most of the time I prefer to sleep for 15 mins longer and just shave under the shower

I make my own: 3 parts aloe Vera juice, 2 parts witch hazel, 1 part everclear. A few drops of orange oil and lime oil. Shake well before using.

Often it is, but I'm looking for something without alcohol as an aftershave and virtually all colognes contain alcohol.
have you tried the Proraso balm? I like it, and may try to recreate it. I have a balm recipe that needs to be thinned out a bit to match the consistency.

Proraso's good but it's not exactly moisturizing.

the thick white stuff in the glass bottle? I thought it worked great in winter.
Ah, you meant the sensitive creamy white version. I thought you were talking about the original menthol green version.

Nah, the creamy white version is TEH BOMB. My holy grail of shavealicious comfort face food.

And I think the scent is a lavender / peppermint profile.

I have the white version of the preshave and I really don't find it to be all that special. Might have to give the aftershave the try.

Careful now fellas. We don't want to affront the more sensitive members of our forum......

Back to shaving - I need a new brush to use with soaps. I have an Omega and a Semogue and neither produce that fantastic lathers. Any suggestions?

I know nothing about good brands, but I've heard that shaving brushes made from the badger's neck hair are best. Apparently, the hair on the neck of the badger is soft, long and very flexible and thus lathers very well.

That could just be some rubbish told to me by a shaving geek that I was speaking to a year or two back, though. I really have no way of knowing whether he was correct, or whether he was crazy.

I have an Edwin Jagger badger brush. It works quite nicely. Not as expensive as others but it doesn't shed very much.

I have a Plisson pure high mountain white badger hair brush.
very elite.
thanks yuo

I find Simpsons generally are my favorties. You pay out the nose for the name, but they do a good job. M7 Manchurian has been my go to for years.

You have a model in particular?

Yeah, Simpsons makes great shit but I'm not willing to pay $400 for a shaving brush right now. Any other suggestions? Remember, using this solely for soaps.

I have an EJ razor myself. You have a model that does well with soaps? There are quite a few to choose from.

Best badger > Pure badger. I think best badger leaves the split ends intact and supple as opposed to pure badger which IIRC is trimmed.

You can pick one up on B/S/T on B&B for like a quarter of that.

Generally with soaps, you want backbone to build lather. Usually this means either cheap badger or really expensive badger. The difference being really expensive badger has soft tips which is nice on the face.

I would look at the Simpsons Wee Scot if you really want a deal. They get sweet reviews.

I think I sold all my extra brushes, but let me check when I get home, I may have something I'll donate to you.

Yeah, I know the brush drill, just not which manu's and their respective models. I had been trying boar brushes and got two to work with, but they really just aren't that great. I don't need face scrubbing, just lather production.

Alternatively you can squeeze at the base of the bristles to stiffen then up when scrubbing the soap.

I felt kinda bad when Papa Smurf at B&B bought an expensive brush from Theirs - Issard and discovered it was very floppy. Instead of figuring out the squeeze truck, he tried to sell it off at a loss.

Yep, technique is good, its just that they don't really produce a great lather without TONS of work, and even with that the hard water here in FL keeps it at a minimum. Just looking for something a bit more impressive I suppose.

Hmm. Those are fairly easy lathering. Have you tried wetting them down and letting them sit for a few before use?

Yep. Its really just the boars themselves. They aren't as productive as I would have hoped. Trouble is I don't have a badger here to work with so I need to go out and buy one.

I've been reading some B&B and they're hot for some brushes from WhippedDog: http://www.whippeddog.com/products/find/brushes-knots

A little to intensive for me, but I thought you guys might be interested.
