I wore Birkenstocks in high school. They were good shoes.

I was taking my shoes off before living in Asia, but living there reinforced the practice. My wife thinks it's really gross not to take off shoes and points out how filthy ground is. I point out that it isn't like we're all getting sick as a result (I like taking shoes off as it keeps floors cleaner...I don't care as much about germs.)

Prior to this new apartment always had hardwood floors and didn't think about it much, past comfort. Once my kid was born I would literally only get dressed minutes before leaving home and immediately changing when getting home as a measure of protection against vomit, shit and all things being a dad brings you in close contact with so I guess the shoe thing started earlier for me as well. Not so much about not bringing the mess in from out, more for keeping the mess within off of me.
 
I am resigned to the fact that the floors will be dirty no matter what. Do you not ever place your briefcase or handbag or luggage on the ground when you're not in the house? It's the same idea.

It's more important to me to keep my bedding pristine. I switch to sandals when I enter the house and take them off before hopping in bed, and put them right back on when I get up.

One thing that does get to me is when people are comfortable sitting on my couch with their sneakers or shoes on the cushion. I have only seen this practice (and fairly commonly) in America.
 
Shoes on bed, sofa, and/or cushions is crazy. Rick James crazy.

Briefcases spend significantly less time touching various parts of the ground than do shoes.
 
Not if you have them take off their shoes.

Some family friends of ours own a very nice townhome in Houston. It is always a stop on those interior design tours. Extraordinarily quirky place (a reflection of their owners, two very bizarre Israeli scholars). They wear their shoes inside all the time; this mystifies my wife since they put so much effort into their home.
 
I live in the Pacific Northwest. I own a pair of Sorel Falcon Ridge slippers, which I would wear all day, Jeff-Lebowski style, if I could. Hell, around here, these probably count as "casual office wear."

Shearling wool inside, tough tread, heavy stitching. I can wear them out to the woodpile in the rain and even in light snow. My feet are in them most of the time that I'm in the house, from about September through June.

And yes, I can't keep plants alive. Sue me.

I also have a set of suede boat shoes that I found at Goodwill; they are ugly as homemade soap but boner-inducingly comfortable.
 
I don't live in a castle to warrant wearing house slippers. Nor am I barbaric enough to wear outside shoes at home.

Shoe off for guests.

Exceptions made for contractors. But they are now generally polite enough to wear those slip on shoe covers before entering. Dusts and pebbles caught on the sole of their work boots might dent and scratch my hardwood floor.

At my parent's place, this type. we call them pantuflas in Spanish.

I wear these Edward Green slippers at home. I can't believe some of the ugly shit you guys wear on your feet at home. You should be embarrassed!

Nope, old herringbone hardwood floors. I do have a big animal rug though.
 
how is the wearing of the sole? I always have the impression that slippers are very delicate and the sole wears very quickly in a hardwood floor or even marble tiles type of surface

It's fine. I've had them for 2 years now. Don't expect them to last forever, but that's ok. I'll get some personally embroidered ones when they wear out. Maybe with coat of arms, but that's a bit tacky, so probably my initials.
 
being an American, and a New Yorker, I prefer a Belgian over a Prince Albert if were to go that route.
 
That is an unfortunate association for what is otherwise a fine house shoe.

Adorable, but I don't think you can split much firewood in those. And if you got eaten by a bear on your way across the yard, the sheriff would look at those slippers and say, "Well, of course he did."

Do you also wear a dressing gown over your shirts and pants? Or change to smoking jacket when smoking or drinking? How's that castle working out for you?

Church folding slippers are perfect for air travel and hotels.

At home, not so much.

I do have a dressing gown and smoking jacket. Dressing gown for in the meanings, smoking jacket for the evenings. Two very comfortable and useful articles of clothing.

We don't have any of those things in the civilized world. We have modern heating and no bears on the entire continent. Lucky us! Besides, you're not supposed to wear the slippers outside, so if you were wearing them in the yard you deserved to be eaten by a bear.
 
I go about the house in these bison mocs. Sometimes I go about in just socks or flip flops. Depends on temp and what part of the house I'm headed to.

Those are nice. No sole on the bottom ensures you won't be tempted to ruin them by wearing them out for much.
