The knitwear thread

That's what I was talking about: you need something lighter for when the temperature is 10-15C.
Yup. A lighter weight cashmere or merino. I dislike cotton jumpers. I think the only one I have around is a RRL crewneck. Haven't worn it in eons.

thanks. I was interested because 4-ply cashmere is new to me and it is warm. It was -1 C this morning and I wore it over a 200 gsm merino for chores and it was toasty. For me, this is a mid layer that compete with light down and synthetic insulation. Not as warm as the Dachstein by a big stretch. Two and 3-ply are outfit components and not mid layers.

I use 4 ply cashmere in the warmer Spring months when the nights get cold. Works really well.

On cold 10 C days a 6 ply cashmere skivvy with 6 ply cashmere cardigan with a merino thermal underlay is not enough.

Some nice little gems available on ebay right now.

Turnbull & Asser 6 ply cashmere

$700.00 and probably worth the money. Been looking for such a thick skivvy for ages, and l know they are rare as hens teeth and won't come cheap.

A rare multi ply Hermes made-in-Scotland 8-12 ply cashmere crewneck.

Almost 2 pounds in weight and probably worth the $1,300 they are asking for it, but would much prefer something in the 3 pound range for me to be tempted.

My 10 ply cashmere Malo cableknit gets lots of wear. Great jumper with no pilling. I think it might be heavier than the Hermes above.

I live in EU. I would like to purchase a Dachstein quality sweater . Do you suggest me any retailers . Heratex seems to be good option because locates in EU otherwise Sweaterchalet locates in USA but I would have custom taxes so any other options for EU?

hi first post here. i just acquired this polo cashmere by ballantyne. i read all the posts and first time i see a label "sport heritage edition" it's a 60,70 or 80 or after 2012 ?

In general the mention of 'heritage' and the multi-language label (the Russian especially) places an item from the 90s or later.

it is also the colour the label that identifies the age of the jumper. black label is 90s if i remember correctly.

60 is blue and 70/80 is red.

the blue dragon is 70 i think but there is no mention of heritage usually and not sure multi-language label is use in this period. So i'm confused. that's why i post here because there is a lot of ballantyne specialist like The Shooman The Shooman

Red dragon = 1960s
Blue dragon = 1970s
No dragon = 1980s
Blue Dragon heritage edition = 2007

The yellow Hermes one is down to USD 931. #whatadeal

Been some great vintage items for sale recently.

Mc George cashmere cardigan - 3 pounds weight
Vintage with no pilling, and possibly a 12 ply. Beats the heck out of any modern 12 ply garment. Probably should have bought it and had it blocked a size up so it fit me. Was asking 500 USD and eventually sold for 350. Kind of regret now buying it now. Purchase of a lifetime.

Proper clothes. Made to last a lifetime.

Scott & Charters wool shawl cardigan - fat boy

What a fairdinkum little rippa. In my size too. Should have bought it/. Sold for roughly 350 USD. Declined to buy it, but would have paid it for cashmere. Still, these rarely come by, so probably worth it for the style.

A rare Ballantyne turtleneck from the 1980's. Rare as hens teeth. All my 1980's turtlenecks have been outstanding, none have ever pilled. Wish it fit me. Bulletproof stuff. Proper clothing.

The Shooman The Shooman , I'm not familiar with this Alan Paine label and a little skeptical. Is this the good stuff? Thank you!

Just make sure it says Made in England on the label somewhere. If it doesn't, avoid. Quality is good, but not as good as the best of Made in Scotland. If you really like it, buy it, but only if Made in England.

Beware of Alan Paine England (Made in Africa), that is a trick they have used. AVOID these below!

Sadly the lovely lady Angela from online knitwear seller Diangka has passed away. She sold lots of multi ply William Lockie. I was wearing one of my favourites she sold me yesterday, a 6 ply 8 gauge Lockie that has not pilled at all over the last 3 years. She will be missed.

Thank you for the tip. I've generally been happy with the Made in England and will pass on this one.

Stumbled across this manufacturer recently: https://www.rymhart-troyer.de/ Unfortunately no English website. It seems they do everything the way it should be done. 1.5-2.5kg of wool, exactly whipped seams, windproof riri zippers, etc.

^^ gotta start somewhere

An extremely rare Ballantyne cashmere golf intarsia. If it fit me l would have bought it in a heart beat. Have not seen one in years.

Hello everyone,
I have not posted for quite a while... it has been a very busy few months.
I have bought this sweater. It will not fit me but I could not resist...
I had never seen a golf sweater with several 'windows' like this one
I am also fond of items that have the 'dual label' of the maker and the retailer. When the retailer is Swiss... even better!

I will try and catch up and post some of the sweaters I have bought in the past months

i think if you wear that you have to go full on golf dork and get the rest of the outfit

His site;

Kirby is a bad shill. 1:55 "Knitwear was expensive to knit"... I'm fairly sure people could buy wool and patterns for a cheap price and knit together a lambswool sweater without paying all that much.
Department stores have been around since about the mid 19th century, and I suspect they sold basic knitwear. They certainly did from the 20s and 30s onwards.
Then he goes on to say that knitwear gains a patina...
Kirby looks tired, he needs to go to bed

My Johnston of Elgin from the fall is piling like crazy, the year old Lockie.. nothing at all. Go figure.

Hi All,
my first time posting. Any thoughts on Glen Abbey cashmere or the company in general? They're from Ireland and appear vintage, but have not seen them in the discussions.

Dear connoisseurs,

Arthur Beale roll necks seems to be robust, dense and very warm. They sell them for Arctic explorers according to their site.
Your opinions please?

Thanks
