The Militarization of U.S. Police: Finally Dragged Into the Light by the Horrors of Ferguson

My understanding is that they, being ordered in by the Governor, would be the Missouri National Guard. Not like I expect them to be NPR-listening vegetarians or anything, but they are likely fairly regional. Where is Missouri?

Its a stereotype, I know, but most of that military crowd shares the same mentality as those cops. You don't join the national guard because the knitting class was full.

I was mainly teasing Office Pants. But there are some rather Ozarkian parts of Missouri.

That 200+ mile border with Arkansas is certainly a hot bed of cultural evolution.

Wow, look at this cop. Gun pointed and threatens to kill protestor.

Years ago, I did a late night run with a giant group of scofflaw sportbike riders and stunters. They wound up in some industrial area, doing wheelies and stoppies and stupid stuff. Cops rolled in and read the riot act over the megaphone. They did literally say "if you try to run, I will shoot you" but I think they were just kidding around.

Is Michael Brown's shooting death really about race?
Some in Ferguson have doubts about whether shooting was really racially motivated
ANALYSISAug 20, 2014 8:58 AM ET
Keith Boag, CBC News

Walking along West Florissant Avenue in Ferguson, Mo., last night, watching the slow retreat of that evening’s protest march, I was suddenly blindsided by a racial stereotype that hit me right in my social conscience.

It happened in an instant.

A young white woman in shorts and a T-shirt, who had been walking with a small group on the sidewalk nearby, paused for a moment to take a photo.

She held her cellphone out between two thumbs and two forefingers, the way we do nowadays, and framed the shot.

Whoosh! Like a trout rising to a fly, a black teen appeared out of nowhere, reached over the woman’s shoulder, snatched the phone from her fingers, and raced off into the night.

"Nooooooo!" wailed the poor woman with a sound that began as outrage but quickly spluttered into a whimper as she accepted that the transaction was final.

Less than a minute later, something like it happened again.

The victim this time was a white man in his late twenties or early thirties. But in this case, there was no fleeting escape. Instead, there was a showdown.

"Gimme back my cellphone!" screamed the white man.

A tall, skinny, black man sized up his screaming complainant, then punched him in the face and walked away.

Done.

I felt my own anger rising.

I wanted to thrash the thieves. Not because I deplored the crimes, though I did, but because I’d had enough of people seeming to reinforce ugly stereotypes this week.

I have had race relations and "crime and punishment" issues buzzing around in my head constantly since I arrived in Ferguson. Suddenly, some things I thought were settled in my mind came loose and started to float around again. All because of foolish young men behaving like caricatures.

The question is whether the shooting death of Michael Brown is a portrait of race relations in America.

The protesters who have turned out every night to confront police and the National Guard certainly think so. But I’m not so sure.

A cop like any other cop, but not

One of the outstanding figures in the sad drama of the last 10 days has been Missouri Highway Patrol Capt. Ron Johnson, a black officer who grew up in Ferguson.

Johnson took over control of security for the protests last week and from the start made personal contact his priority. He walked the street every night and listened to the people as they complained about what happened to Michael Brown and how badly they felt they'd been treated as protesters.

When Johnson spoke, he didn’t sound like a cop so much as a preacher. He quoted scripture, felt the other guy’s pain and articulated it beautifully.

He talked about what Ferguson "could be, should be, will be" and when he spoke to the audience at the Michael Brown memorial on Sunday, he touched their hearts. They were on their feet interrupting him with cheers and applause.

Yet on the front lines against the protesters, he is abused and insulted. His pleas for calm, patience and understanding are ignored. His promise to not use tear gas was broken the moment there were shots fired from within the crowd.

It’s as though no one, not even a favourite son such as Johnson, is allowed to break out of his stereotype. He’s just a cop like any other cop except, really, he isn’t.

A long, sad history

Away from the protests, I have found black voices who have serious doubts about whether a racially motivated crime has been committed.

They do believe it’s outrageous that anyone should be shot dead by a police officer for walking down the middle of the street.

They believe justice can only be served if that officer is charged with a criminal offence.

But they also say they can’t know what the motivation was. They haven't any evidence. Was it race, or was it simply fear or something else?

They don't know. Neither do I.

My Twitter feed overflows with comments from people who are nowhere near the scene and have no special knowledge of the facts but who have very strong feelings about whether this was or wasn’t a racially motivated shooting.

I have learned that people most often choose to believe what they want to believe.

We know America has race problems. We know they aren't what they used to be but they are still worse than they should be.

But we don't quite know yet how Michael Brown's death fits into that long and sad history.

If we think the cop shot the young man because the cop was white and the young man was black, that's a belief we have chosen.

I think it's a sad choice but the fact so many seem to have made it is the real indication of race relations in America.

There is a lot of evidence to contradict this statement, not much to support it. But you knew that, because you called it stereotype, yet you espouse it anyway. Go buy some multivitamins.

Also, I recall a team building exercise involving the Myers-Briggs assessment, the security types in the room all fell into the same general personality types, it was interesting because they all did the test independently.

Report: Police Drove Over Michael Brown Memorial, Let Dog Piss on It

Between withheld information, unnecessary use of force, and aggression toward journalists, it should be clear by now that police in Ferguson colossally mishandled the aftermath of Michael Brown's death. A new Mother Jones report, however, paints an even bleaker picture than we've already seen.

After Brown was shot on August 9, mourners including Brown's mother created an impromptu memorial on the spot where his body fell and was left for hours. Then, according to several sources told Mother Jones's Mark Follman, a police officer let his dog piss on it:

The incident was related to me separately by three state and local officials who worked with the community in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. One confirmed that he interviewed an eyewitness, a young woman, and pressed her on what exactly she saw. "She said that the officer just let the dog pee on it," that official told me. "She was very distraught about it." The identity of the officer who handled the dog and the agency he was with remain unclear.

Not long after that, police blocked off the area and proceeded to drive a car over candles and rose petals that had been placed there.

By then, police had prohibited all vehicles from entering Canfield Drive except for their own. Soon the candles and flowers had been smashed, after police drove over them.

"That made people in the crowd mad," [Missouri state Rep. Sharon] Pace said, "and it made me mad." Some residents began walking in front of police vehicles at the end of the block to prevent them from driving in.

St. Louis alderman Antonio French, who was later arrested during a protest and released without charges, documented the scene at the time.

Tommie Pierson, a Missouri state representative, told Follman a state police officer nearly maced him when he stood with a group of peaceful protesters August 19:

There was a strong police presence but the atmosphere remained peaceful, Pace told me, and their goal was to mediate between their constituents and law enforcement. Police officers approached and ordered the crowd to keep moving. A female Missouri Highway Patrol officer confronted Pierson, reaching for her mace.

"Are you getting ready to mace me?" Pierson asked in disbelief. The officer backed off after Pace explained to another cop who they were.

"It's bad when you don't have any respect for anybody," Pierson told me last week. "Even now that's still going on: 'You do what I tell you, or I'll mace you, I'll shoot you, no questions asked.'"

If one has any doubt about whether stories like Pierson's are true, one only need look at the video evidence.

Bullshit. America is probably the least racist country on the planet. There are twelve black people in Canada, and less than that in England. its real easy to be tolerant toward people youve never met.

Actually, there are lots of black people in England, from the UK's former colonies in Africa and the Caribbean. Lots of ethnically Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi people, too.

Yeah, Gawker. fake.

Well, it's actually from the St Louis Public Radio website and it is one of the documents released by St Louis Country Prosecutor Robert McCulloch - the site was linked to by Rambo up above.

You can see the entirety of the diary entry here: http://www.documentcloud.org/documents/1370734-witness-40-journal-entry.html

Don't mind him. He's going to shoot down everything I post. He doesn't do cardio so being angry on the internet is the only way to burn off the calories from all the wine he's drinking.

Stupid ghetto-dwellers, we were with you when you were peaceful and supposedly supporting a martyred innocent.
Now you are destroying your own community in support of a violent criminal. Why do you make us switch sides and support the cops shooting you because of your viciously wrongheaded lunacy?

Yeah you haven't been to the council estates in urban areas where all the dodgy brown, black, white trash people are in England. There were race riots all the same during decolonisation when everyone a little bit posh moved into the mother country.

I still don't know why this is making headlines. It's a village of a 20,000 people. How much rioting can you do? ISIS probably has more reservists than that.

I just walked into a 1960s moment that my parents' suburb always conjures: half a dozen white men in middle age all with overcoats and ties staring silently at the Ferguson riots on television. Oh - everyone in the train station was white except the Asian selling coffee.

Must admit, I don't understand why they don't go and riot in whitey neighborhoods. This kinda says a lot. Hey, we're mad so lets shit where we eat...

Anyway, of course the whitey cop would get off. We're in a police state.

I love how you post this like it's so ludicrous that a punch can kill someone, especially a large man punching downward at the head of a seated man who can't move to absorb the blow all that much.

But it had a snarky tweet attached to it, so sure, sounds legit.

Bullets that land kill more people than punches that land do. Advantage cop.

I might have some more sympathy for the late cigar thief had his supporters not told bald-faced lies about the circumstances surrounding his death. That stuff causes a severe backlash when the truth comes out.

No, it's not. I don't know how many times this has to be explained to you. I challenge you to find a single quantitative measure to provide some evidence for this.
How the fuck can you measure racism quantitatively? Surveys? "Excuse me sir, I'd like to take a moment of your time and ask you if you think Blacks are Niggers and Mexicans are worth nothing more than fruit picking?" Because people would most definitely answer that honestly.

Right. I forgot that Michael Brown was a legally certified lethal weapon and had been on the run from the law for beating people to death.

Just out of curiosity, since I know you're going to continue to prop this ridiculous line of thinking up, when was the last time someone reported dying from a single blow to the face via punch?

It does happen, but the idea that the cop feeling intimidated = right to kill is crazy.
