The Movie Preview, Review, & Recommendation Thread pt. II

Finally got round to watch Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards, his outclassed himself this time by rewriting the end of WWII.

Violent pornography signifying very little. You can mess with history, but having Hitler and his entire entourage killed in a Paris cinema in 1944 is pushing the envelope of suspended belief somewhat. Still, quite fancied the German actress.

I was troubled by Tarantino's treatment of the subject matter in both Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained.

His cameo in The Muppets Movie was troublesome too: a kids film with a violent movie director playing himself.

His films strike me as stylish autism, there's no empathy or humanity. He's a twisted one alright.

By contrast persuaded the family to watch The First Great Train Robbery with Sean Connery and Donald Sutherland, a classic heist film and has aged very well indeed.

The female version of Ocean's Eleven is Ocean's Eight? Isn't anyone going to complain about gender inequality?

That said I just read Christopher Plummer substituted in after production and won a Golden Globe nomination? One wonders if Kevin Spacey would get a nod if he wasn't busy burning his own house down.

Actually it is just like the old joke about the male brain and the female brain.

Went to watch Star Wars - The Last Jedi the other night!

Actually enjoyed it. With this one they seem to be following the modern Bond approach of taking elements out of the old films, playing around with the chronology and taking the piss a little out of 'iconic' scenes.

All in all, an enjoyable romp. But at 2.5hrs (not including trailers and adverts) the old bladder was groaning under the influence of a large serving of coke.

Didn't recognise Laura Dern with her new eyebrows though.

watched the new netflix movie Bright. its pretty terrible. i can't believe they spent almost $100 million on this piece of shit.

How much of it went to Will Smith's salary?

How long is that film? Felt like 3 hours and I skipped half of it because it was so boring. At least the fight scenes with the Elves were acceptable. Didn't quite get the massage of the film, though!

Suffered through it last night.

$90 million? It was like an episode of Buffy the Vampire slayer.

How long did it take to guess that Will Smith would be a bright?

When was this war between the Dark Lord, the Orcs and the Elves? 2000 years ago but how does that resonate with LA looking like today except for a few fairies, Orcs and Elves living large in Berverly Hills?

Oh, yes, and Centaur cops as throwaway characters.

Could the "rascist" graffiti be any worse?

Magic wands blow non-brights to smithereens if they touch them but nonetheless everyone wants to get their hands on it?

But, props for a colostomy bag being central to a character's soliliquay.

All that was missing was the Dark Lord arising and the giant Stay Puff marshmallow man.

Sequels are already ordered.

Rambo's still in the queue waiting for a showing.
That’s why I didn’t want to share any spoilers! Though I’m almost certain that he won’t like it at all.

In fact, the only people around me who like it are the “to hell with the plot and/or acting as long as the movie and casting choices vindicate my political convictions.”

Harrison Ford's not in it. His wry sarcasm was the best part of the previous movie.

Opinion Error. Jar Jar sets a low bar.
Not at all. Actually I take everything that I've said about Jar Jar Binks as a character and Hayden Christensen as an actor back. . .

In all honesty, it is better to have a dumb character or two providing comic relief (which I think is some sort of arbitrary Hollywood requirement) than having an entire movie like "The Last Jedi" that has a constant and utterly adolescent need to puncture the gravity and solemnity of the story at every turn.

The cheap Odeon in Putney has now rebranded as a “luxe” and put prices up. One less place to go. Shame as the audiences were idiot-free.

Cinemas are suffering with a loss of customers these days.

Nothing I want to see anyway.

Blade Runner 2049 is another one of those films that are way too long.
While the visuals are stunning and the acting is good, the "action" is spread over too many minutes.
Could have easily been an hour shorter without missing anything important.

Watched Young Winston for the first time in awhile last night. Still holds up rather well.

I've always considered Simon Ward a bit of an enigma, he had a great run of films in the early 70s then he did some awful ones just for the money. He looked great in Zulu Dawn as Lt. William Vereker and then he seemed to vanish from decent films and nearly died after getting beaten up in 1987. Then when he returned to television he was this very old looking chap with none of his youthful elan and his star quality seems to have gone.

I always think there's more to his story, perhaps behind his getting beaten up and his descent into rubbish films.

There is clearly a lack of coherence in the Netflix original productions policy when compared with HBO for example. Too much, too fast and finally too mediocre.

I watched Bright too. It took awhile for it to get started but essentially it was one long protracted chase scene with laughably immature social commentary. Separating it into three viewing sessions made it more tolerable.

They've had quite a few good ones and I've muched preferred their series to anything from the PC virtue signalling BBC these days.

The BBC managed to turn a series about midwives in 1950s London into social commentary on apartheid in South Africa and not to mention all the Asian immigrants who could teach the dirty filthy cockneys a thing or two about cleanliness. And then the bizarre story line in Doctor Who - no not the Doctor is now a woman one - but the one with the lesbian lizard humanoid. That was very strange.

The two bartenders last night said the Star Wars movie had great special effects but a story that doesn't resonate. My aunt said the action sequences replaced any character development especially between master and pupil.

European productions - especially coming from national broadcasting companies - are paralyzed by the politically correct (and it's way worse in France than in the UK). The US industry is so huge and diversified (particularly the actorship pool) that there is much more freedom and space for innovation. The only recent UK production I found pleasant is the Cumberbatch Sherlock.

As it happens the last decent French series I watched was A Very Secret Service, which was really funny. In fact that was the last series I watched and laughed at. The rest is a wilderness, but I do feel that 2018 is the beginning of a return to sanity, beginning with the elections in Italy and the promise of another exit from the EU - which will give wind to the Brits - and the mass deportation of the invasion force in Italy. I don't think anyone who's living in Italy, or visited regularly over the last few decades and seen the deterioration at street in level in the last few years can deny this is the only way to save Italy from becoming just another soiled failed North African state. Of this I have hope.

We can sort the television content out later.

There are some good TV shows. Engrenage (named Spiral in England) is one of them. The first two seasons of Le Bureau des Légendes on DGSE (French secret services) are also well made and interesting with a true fictional identity (the realist mirror of A Very Secret Service which was indeed funny and refreshing, you should look at the two OSS117 with Jean Dujardin which are great pieces of humor). The french TV mainstream production is just an ethnomasochist and meaningless shit.

May the Frexit win one day! Despite our historical defiance relationship, I must admit British are a superior people. Contrary to the French, you didn't lost your freedom, sovereignty and independance instinct. That's the most important for a nation. Economy is cyclical, identity is structural. I think our friend WildBlue will share your will to see the fall of the Uro bureaucratic empire.

They are absolutely brilliant, both of them (I watched the "German" version. Oliver Kalkofe did a great job with Dujardin's voice).
I would, however, doubt that a certain member on this forum might enjoy the non-PC parts.

I watched The Doors documentary with Johnny Depp doing the narration last night. Quite a few clips which look greatly improved in Hi-Res, but ultimately I've seen them all before except a few snippets of The Soft Parade with Jim in the studio.

Worth watching, but you certainly won't come away thinking anything other that this was
one raggedy-ass band live and actually Jim didn't look that bad even close to the end.

funny - I began to watch that 3 weeks ago - only watched 15 mins or so. Might get back to it

I just finished watching Blade Runner 2049. I didn't think it was too slow. I still don't know how he made the connection who the daughter was based on the fake memories. A lot of the scenes were empty and rather dead except for the food court and brothel scene. I'm not sure if that was the point - to convey the planet was dying. Anyway, it was fun to see consumerism taken to the excess and a dystopia that makes a reality of our worst of environmental fears. Apparently people still drink Johnnie Black in the future so I'm set.

I had serious issues with the AI girlfriend. Standing in queue at Best Buy last week to return something for my father I heard two chaps behind me discussing getting into Amazon Echo or Google Home and how they need two and to sync it with their mobile. One of them literally said, "It'd be great if I didn't have to think. Google Home would tell me what movie I needed to watch, where I need to drive to, and how to get there. What food I want in the fridge. I'd need two of them so I can always ask Google upstairs and downstairs." The other chap was more worried how to call the assistant, Google, or some other affectionate name - he thought Siri sounded better. I have issues against this type of world vis-à-vis privacy but I have even more issues when human beings stop questioning the computer or robot and become slaves to them. I think that's a greater slavery risk than us abusing the robots. Case in point - people who swear by their GPS map and say, "But Google Maps says we should go this way..."

I still don't know how he made the connection who the daughter was based on the fake memories.

She kinda told him her back story when he visited her. So when he found out it wasn't him he probably figured out who she was.
I remember that in the first film they sad Rachel was made especially for Harrison Ford's character. It is a long stretch, however, that she was capable of giving birth to a child. And why has the technology vanished?
The really stupid thing was the holo-girlfriend getting wet when she was in the rain. Why bother?

It's already happening. That's the power of Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple. They do "recommend" the products, places, movie studios etc. that pay for such services.

I watched the South Korean movie "The Villainess"! Opening scene is bloody insane. Sadly (and since it's a SK Drama) it sort of turns into more of a soap opera. The action gets slightly worse, probably due to the woman that plays the girl after her surgery not being that good at wielding tanto knives. Overall very good.
