The Movie Preview, Review, & Recommendation Thread pt. II

Watched the Coen Brothers' "Hail, Caesar" via Netflix a couple of weeks back and thoroughly enjoyed it. Well worth a watch.

As an aside, one of the actors was Alden Ehrenreich, who will play the young Han Solo in the upcoming Solo movie. I'd never heard of him before, but he did a good job.
 
Why do I keep thinking the Black Panther movie has something to do with that 1960s group?
 
So was it a sort of romantic, boring prelude to Hellboy? Do we find out where Abe came from?
 
lady bird was boring but i can't exactly relate to a 17 year old girl's plight

three billboards outside ebbing was good. a bit slow. the parts with peter dinklage seemed completely unnecessary and the ending was really a letdown. best of the bunch so far.

My father just watched Dunkirk and had no idea why the film was made.

I think the separate narratives made it disjointed. Also, the Dunkirk was an evacuation - a miraculous one, but not really on the same level as D-day, Stalingrad, El Alamein.

It was a victory of English sangfroid and improvisation in a getting a whole army of a beach head. Compare with the fall of Singapore which was an unmitigated disaster. Dunkirk proved that the Brits did not surrender as easilty as the French.

I enjoyed it. A smart move would be to censor the nudity and sexual content to give a bigger potential audience.

Also enjoyed the Churchill picture apart from the mandatory diversity and the Tube train encounters.

Thought Three Billboards was over rated and the actress was too much of a sweary Mary type for me to care how it all panned out.

My previous cinema was revamped to a ‘Luxe’. This allows lazy bar stewards to watch movies lying down in a reclining seat and to stuff their faces with all sorts of promoted food and drink. However, the entrance price has shot up. Switched to Wimbledon and the trick there is you got 40% off the next film. Rather like a Toby carvery - 33% off your next meal. Not that many pictures I want to see though.

You mean black people didn't take the tube? The cinematography was strange for that. I don't know why Westminster had to look like a freemasons gathering at night.

Between Gary Oldman, John Lithgow, Michael Gambon and Brian Cox - I'm still undecided who did the best portrayal of Churchill in the past two years.
 
Would not have been black people around during the war. They certainly would not be able to quote poetry if they had been.

Troy on BBC also has politically correct, but historically inaccurate, casting of a black actor as Achilles.

Its because it never happen, entirely fictional. As if Churchill, an aristocrat, would take the tube even ignoring the fact that its around the time of the Dunkirk is absurd.

That aside, its a good film, not a great one, and Oldman is great in the role.

Lithgow as Churchill? Strange. I can well imagine him as a good FDR though. He'd have that WASP'y patrician air down pat.

Just watched Black Panther.

For a comic book movie, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I haven't seen all of the Marvel movies, but of the ones I've seen, I've enjoyed "single hero" movies like Ant Man and Black Panther much more than the ensemble Avengers movies. The latter are simply too crowded with both characters and action and generally end up being a hyper-kinetic mess.
 
Talk about token minorities. Star Wars Last Jedi is full of them. How did I know the black guy and Asian lady would get together? When is it a disguise to be part of the empire as a black and Asian officer?

The part where they kill the big bad supreme leader was pretty much a repeat of Vader throwing the emperor out to save his son.

Why do the imperial troops go straight into the front door at the end? Why can't they just outflank the rebels and approach the door from the side?

I thought it was overly long. The comedic gestures were a bit forced. Now that there are at least three subplots (back at the fleet, the black guy and the Asian lady, and of course the main plot) it's taking 3x as long time to resolve all of them. They are recycling a lot of motifs including some of the battle scenes (yet another millennium falcon in tight spaces! yet another bombing run where you dump stuff into an exhaust port!). The telepathic conversations were new but felt more like a device where the writer couldn't figure out a scene where these characters could actually talk so let's just make them feel each other out. I don't know why they rescued Carrie Fisher. That was a very easy way for her to leave the franchise.

In the end, I have no idea why people queued for it. In the back of my mind I was mixing up the Rogue One lady and this one. Disney is diluting the franchise. Hopefully they don't purchase rights to The Godfather and I forget how unique all of the original cast were because of the sheer number of spin offs and knock offs.

Exactly my thinking, too.

Not only did her "super-Leia" pose that she used to fly through space look pretty silly, but it was the perfect time for the character to exit, given that Carrie Fisher clearly wouldn't be appearing the next movie.
 
Brawl in Cell Block 99 was excellent. Really a throwback to the ultra-violent noir movies of the old days.
 
The Foreigner with Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan was also excellent. easily the best two movies i've seen in a long time.

Jackie Chan? Does he fight or do any of his stunts anymore?

I've lost respect for him after he decided to throw his political lot with the communists and become an unpaid mouthpiece and apologist for them.

I believe he does. This was far far better than any film I’d seen him in in the past decade.

If the outtakes in the end credits are of him failing to complete stunts then he was in the action. If it was all him stumbling over English lines or some other self deprecating humour, then it's more like his recent fare.

You're quite wrong there, globally and in this day and age of no borders and identity politics, we need to accept that the whites are the true minorities. Then they can claim some privilege, based on skin colour. That's how screwed-up and toxic the narrative has become. Very sad.

If you dumb down some of the grammar and add an exclamation mark at the end of very sad that could almost be mistaken as a President Trump tweet.
