The Movie Preview, Review, & Recommendation Thread pt. II

Watched it last Wed when it hit Netflix. My review:

What do you get when you cross Goodfellas(5/5) with Hoffa(4/5) and Casino(3.5/5)? The most anticipated movie of the year....or one of them.

I caught this on Netflix today. Honestly....I saw this movie before. DeNiro plays his standard character. Pesci was a toned down Pesci. Pacino was solid as Hoffa.

NOT a classic. Nowhere on the level of Goodfellas. I might say that I preferred Hoffa over this.

I will rewatch.....maybe over the long weekend to see if I change my mind. I was never a huge fan on Casino.....but I lump The Irishman in with that.

3.5-ish/5....subject to change once I watch it again.

Related: I met JImmy Hoffa Jr years ago when he was running for the pres of the Teamsters. I was working for a steel company Queens, NY and he came by the facility to campaign. I was not a Teamster...jr management....but the drivers/workers all were. Cool dude!

*****************

I haven’t watched it again. Honestly, it didn’t move me to and isn’t one of those movies that I will watch a part of whenever it is on(Shawshank, Scarface, A Few Good Men, etc.)

Now that I look/think back, it was ok. I might say 3/5 today.

I watched it over several nights, that's how much it captured my undivided attention.

You can't make old guys look young, the movement ain't there. A fail.

And where was Robbie Robertson's soundtrack?

‘The Irishman’ was the first thing I watched on the free month with Netflix. I did not check the duration before I started - but I watched it in one go. It was good, but exactly what you would expect from de Niro, Pacino and Pesci. Certainly better than ‘Meet the Fokkers’.

Netflix so far has a decent range. No ads and skip intro facility also impressed. This is good because I am giving up paying the TV licence fee from the New Year.

I took the kids to the new Star Wars film last night. I thought it was a lot of fun. Pretty much followed the formula of the original film with a younger cast, while tying up all the lose plot ends of the last 8 films using the original cast in supporting roles. 8.5/10

I was reading and rereading your sentence. They all have the ability to skip the introductory credits to promote binge watching but you're right, Amazon Prime has annoying adverts for their own shows. Two skips.

Did Harrison Ford return? He was really the only reason why I watched this newer trilogy.

Yes, everyone makes an appearance. Even Carrie Fischer comes back from the grave with a digital ghost.

the new star wars was absolute dogshit. you really have to give it to jj abrams. the man has completely killed off the two most beloved movie franchises of the 20th century.

what didn’t you like about it?

i have no particular connection to these movies in general so it just seemed like a gigantic mess. the whole palpatine/sith portion of the movie was just awful. all those ships, more ships than any army has ever had, come rising up out of the ground? and they're all manned with a crew? then he shoots lightning and it only miraculously hits enemy ships and none of his? jj's just a god awful movie maker.

The other one being Star Trek?

I thought Fringe was pretty good.

yes

fringe was enjoyable but it, like all his other series, went on too long and came to an unsatisfying conclusion.

I thought the first Star Trek wasn't bad. Also the one with Khan. He does have a thing about rehashing the original storylines ever so slightly but not quite enough to avoid being accused of a verbatim remake.

Wow! Netflix nailed this......

What happens when a random/grotesque internet video goes viral? The clock starts ticking on the worldwide chase for the suspect.

The cops.......wait......it’s not the cops chasing, but a team of random internet sleuths! They link up via Facebook and try to identify the suspect as the videos escalate.

This is brilliant! If it was not a true story, I might be laughing at the Hollywood like timeline/script.

It’s an easy watch in that it is 3 eps. What I also like is that it gets right to the point. No unnecessary background fluff.

Netflix is knocking it out the park with these real life legal series!

4.75/5

And won 2......
Since they bet heavily on The Irishman and you didn't rate it....

I still can't find 3 1/2 hours of my life to watch it. For me a film like that would require 4 viewings at a minimum.

The Pharmacist. Very good. Mr. Schneider seems a decent, god-fearing man on a mission.

Different type of drug addiction to UK - pill mills and OxyContin.

In The Heart of The Sea about the sinking of the Essex whaling ship in 1820. A Ron Howard outing from 2015 on Netflix. I thought it was pretty good including the special effects with the realistic whale.

its the odds on favorite to win best picture at this point.

No.

That Korean film won. Anyone going to watch that?

On the radio they said Billie Elilish didn't know who Eminem is.

I saw Parasite a couple of weeks ago. It's both good and weird. A well deserved win.

I'm watching Knives Out. How does Daniel Craig have a southern accent? It's almost incredulous that James Bond speaks in such a manner.

‘The Stranger’ written by Harlan Coben whose name is so American he could be a country and western singer. The book is set in America but the film has relocated it in the UK. This is the reverse of what usually happens.

Good plot.

PLEASE tell me you are not talking about the Netflix series?

I finished it last night(after starting it twice.) Too many plots/subplots. Too confusing.

This is another series, in my opinion, trying to go the Broadchurch route and just muddling it up.

I can watch S1 of Broadchurch over and over. No chance that I would watch The Stranger again.

Yes Netflix series. Various plots are to keep people guessing.

Various plots are supposed to come together in the end like a bow. This one didn't. Too confusing.

Horrible ending. I really still have no clue what happened and won't bother going back to watch it again.

I recently watched this with my son on Netflix (Australia):

Godfather-The-960x1440.jpg

Needless to say, it was excellent. I hadn't seen it for over 20 years and had forgotten parts of it, so it was great to re-watch it.

So many good scenes. The way that Brando inhabited the character of Don Vito Corleone was outstanding, and a young Al Pacino as Michael Corleone was also great. So many good supporting actors - James Caan, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Abe Vigoda - and so many great scenes. The soundtrack and musical accompaniment also worked very well with the movie.

For the recent reissue they remastered the film stock and so those dark shadowy patchy areas are not so dark. Some like it, others not.

We Brits have Shakespeare, Dickens and The Man For All Seasons, and the Americans have John Ford Westerns, the 20th century novel and the Godfather. Great moral tales one and all!

I believe it is still the top rated film in IMDB. I heard of the film when I was a teenager and rented it. It's one of those films I will watch about once a year. The characters are so fascinating especially when Michael says to his father he is with him in the hospital. Or they are sitting in the backyard talking about how Barzini was going to ambush Michael. When I see Tom Hagen I don't think Robert Duvall, I think Tom Hagen. Later in my uni days one of my lady friends bought me the disc set because she knew how in love I was with the film.

On looking at it again, Tom Hagen and Vito Corleone have more hair than at the tail end of the film. Tom Hagen is bald at the crown and uses a comb over in the front when Tessio pleads for his life. In the garden scene, Vito Corleone's crown is a noticeably thin.

I searched on the Internet and apparently there is an elapsed time of ten years from the wedding scene to the baptism so they also aged the characters accordingly. That also explains how Tom Hagen suddenly has his hair back at the end of The Godfather Part 2 in the flashback. I just thought Robert Duvall was invited back in for a re-shoot.

Finally finished The Irishman. Took me six sessions.

To be honest the right hand side is how I remember Pacino in Heat or something.

No visual effect can reverse the fact that De Niro has a hunch now.

For whatever reason I decided to watch this tonight...

Then the Israeli guy said it's too late to find patient zero all you can do is hide...

To Live and Die in L.A. How have I never seen this film before? As if Lethal Weapon were directed by an artist.

I enjoyed it, too. I thought that the Bruce Lee fight scene was a bit silly but I enjoyed the film and both Pitt and Di Caprio turned in really good performances.

watched Die Hard with a Vengeance tonight. such a good movie. the action movies these days really do suck.

Like "Bad boys for life"! Or "6 Underground"! Or "Bloodshot" with Vin Diesel (who had the weirdest voice in it). While the actual action scenes are good, it's the plot and characters that are the letdown.
