The Movie Preview, Review, & Recommendation Thread pt. II

Watched Apex. Charlize Theron is now reduced to making simplistic straight to streaming movies? It talks about her losing her husband (?) to a climbing accident so she's doing a kayaking in the wild trip. Bumps into some rough men - one of which is Taron Egerton playing an Aussie living in the bush. Then he reveals he's one of those sadistic born again tribesmen out to hunt other humans and eat them.

The final part where they have to climb a cliff and Theron carries Egerton (whose leg is broken by her) up is a bit incredulous. I would have just finished him off and get on with it. But anything for dramatic effect.

People we meet on vacation. Stripped down to its core it is Emily Bader and Tom Blyth being "platonic" vacation buddies. Through flashbacks where they take a trip every year we see their lives evolve. Sometimes she has a boyfriend. Sometimes he has a girlfriend. By 2/3 into movie you just want to throw something and go hey you two should hook up. Stop with the on again off again stuff.

Lucien Laviscount shows up as one of Bader's flames as the hot rich photographer nomad in Tuscany. Bloke is going to be forever typecast in Netflix in that boyfriend but not quite husband material role since he started in Emily in Paris.

My wife loved this one. I wanted to throw things at the TV

Went out to BIG screen to see The Sheep Detectives. V Good movie- Not really for small kids. A bit heavy at times. Huge Jack Man does a good line in workwear - chambray workshirts etc.

Office Romance.

J. Lo making formulaic rom coms. In Marry Me she was a diva playing... I guess herself. This time she's a business diva and Brett Goldstein is the guy below the main legal counsel to somehow finds himself in her presence during a crisis, falls for her, and then predictably there's a trust thing that drives them both apart.

It's so formulaic it ends with them rekindling in front of a shareholder or press conference. Notting Hill style.

J. Lo is 56? She's looking better than some of the early 20s girls who were going to the baseball stadium down the street from me.

I forgot to add Brett Goldstein is going to get typecasted if he doesn’t break out of his Ted Lasso character. I thought he was about to go all posh in this movie but then he confesses in the movie it is all an act and he can’t go oi you cunt in an office.

Ladies First reminds me a lot of The Family Man. Basically both men wake up and have their worlds turned upside down. Sacha Baron Cohen is in a condescending prick transported to a world with a female Jesus, female Pope and men do all the domestic work whilst women eat steaks and slam down alcohol shooters. Is all the humour from a 50 something Cohen dated? Men these days do all sorts of cosmetic stuff including wax and fillers to look younger. They just don't advertise it. There will be the day when hair extensions are the norm with men.

The problem is in The Family Man Nicolas Cage doubles down on the CEO life and then turns down the dream job that gets him back into Wall Street in his alt-world to be with his family. He learns his lesson. There is no contrition with Cohen who just doubles down on being a condescending male prick and unabashedly sleeps his way to the top (no shame for a man), drinks his boss' boss under the table (again no shame for a man), and wins the CEO job because the top woman had to take her kid in for a dental emergency and he's a childless/spouseless single man.

I come back to The Family Man once a year. But I won't be watching Ladies First ever again.
