The SF/AAAC/FNB trainwreck thread

what do you think of the upgrade?

There are more advertisements.

To be honest I was going to check the classifieds - then I realised I don't have money so I'm not going to browse the site now. It's okay, I won't cheat on this forum.

Now that it's working its fine. Very unprofessional transition though for such a big site.
I think the fact it is such a big site was the problem. I'm still not convinced that platform is optimized for anything bigger than DW and our 6 active members/4 active threads.

I agree with FriendCustomer FriendCustomer - that transition was as messy as a USA presidential election. And all that from "young" "tech savvy" "cooldudes"

Every post on every watched tread pulls an alert atm. Logged in and had 150+ alerts. ffs.

All of a sudden I started getting emails for every single post, even though that option wasn't ticked. Had to log in and "unwatch" every single thread.

Does anyone know how Murlsquirrel can afford all the shit he's buying when he's a federal gov't employee? He has said that he overdresses to work. I got no problem with him spending his own money but curious as to how he keeps this lifestyle afloat.

The only federal employee I know earns north of 150,000 a year as a civilian contractor thing on a base. He had been a midlevel officer (major, I think) in the Air Force prior.

i think major would be considered far above mid-level.

I always think of it as right in the middle: Lt, Cap, Maj, Col, Gen

Looking at it in a different way, however, Lts and Caps probably account for 90% of all the officers, which makes majors inner circle elite 10%z
doghouse doghouse ?

Anyway, people can definitely make good money working for the government if the job is in conjunction with the military.

I always marvel at the subject matter in these threads when I pop in.

Yeah, I would characterize Major as mid-level. You get orders from the same amount of levels above you as levels below that you get to order about yourself. as you say, there's not as many proportionally, but I'm not sure that's the best way to think about it.

Working as a government contractor is the biggest scam out. We are literally paying people twice what they made in the government to do the same job. You never hear the budget hawks talk about that though.

It seems to be the world over....get on the government/military approved supplier list and Bob's your uncle! Lots of money to be made in the UK (particularly) and here slightly less. Better profits than working for private sector clients, I wonder why that might be?

I couldn't care any less what he is. The question arose out of seeing his purchases along with the assumption that he was just a federal employee. Given that I am in DC, I know a lot of fed. employees and they can't afford that kind of lifestyle and thus I was baffled.

There are many SFites who spend beyond their means on menswear

Exactly - we had this discussion here some time ago. For some people, spending as much as they earn (or even more) is an entirely foreign concept. For others, it's something that they do all the time, as they're prepared to spend all that they have, or even go into debt, to get what they want (or what they perceive that they need).

I don't know whether murlsquirl falls into that category or not, but I'm sure that some people on SF do, similar to people on car fora, or other consumption-oriented fora.

What do you think the motivation is to wear a signet ring though? I don't believe the family line bullshit for a second.

Maybe the whole I don't work with my hands angle so I'm superior to you?

^It could be, although personally I don't think so.

Rather, I think that it's to create a point of difference, create a conversation piece.

I also suspect that, for some people, the intention is also to create a bit of faux-heritage, to perhaps to pretend to be someone or something that they're not - a bit of aristocratic play-acting, in a sense.

He is a wannabe:

"Merely from an old family of my mother's line dating, ligitametly, from 13th century. My fathers line, which I am head of the family in the anachronistic sense, is not so grand nor landed.
Would I wear a signet ring, no. But by tradition within the majority of families, the head passes it on to the next generation.
Regards"

Then someone who knows the game says:

NewMine is reverse deep seal engraved. This means it produces a proper seal in the right direction when pressed. That's the way its 'supposed' to be done. Honestly its the same as my grandfathers (and great great great etc.) and my mother's, it was given to me when I turned 25. However as its 2017 you can do whatever you want, no ones going to notice. I wear it because it's a family thing and it makes you feel like you're part of something. Not for everyone though. Also, it sound tacky to put the generational number on the ring and I've never seen it. It's already pretty big statement, it doesn't need anything else.

Nowadays a signet ring is used to signify your noble heritage towards others. It's kind of used as a douchy member's club thing, and most who wear it invariably act like they're better than the "commoners". There's quite a few of those types in the finance world unfortunately. My former boss was one. I think he got laid off shortly after I left, along with all the other ring wearing upper management. It's funny how they still stick together these days.

Herladry differs per country, but often a coat of arms was for one particularly person only. Just because your great-great-great-grandfather was granted one doesn't always mean you are "allowed" to wear it. Family coat of arms are relatively rare.

I understand wanting to keep the tradition alive, but it's a pretty shitty tradition anyways.

Olo. Still piling on Allen Bee
