What's Making You Happy Today?

It is a fine balance between working hard, trying to make a difference and all of those things we do at work and working too hard.

We are all replaceable and no one will remember us when we leave. Sure there will be moments when someone might think fondly of us but life goes on.

Spend all of your time at work and life goes on without you.

Bit late for that mate. Two international assignments later and my social circle reduced by half each time I returned.

I am under no illusion I am irreplaceable at work. I'm in middle management.

Working on something somehow brings me joy and a sense of accomplishment. And I know it can be counted on to be rewarding.

I'm rather glad I'm finished hosting that conference last week. I can go back to my day to day motions now.

I think I have this  motorcycle speedometer issue fixed by shimming a gap with a cut-up sliver of a credit card. Also, the thing didn't show signs of water getting in the fuel tank after three days of rain.

Going for a 4-day-trip to the Netherlands tomorrow, searching for Bamiballen and Nasiballen...

would you be able to visit conchita and give him/her a half slap for being mean to me on the WAYWT about wearing at shirt under my shirt?

Thanks

LOLZ...

Sorry, but was too stuffed from bitterballen and krabkrokettjes, couldn't even move a single finger.

Trader Joe's dry roasted & salted pistachios. One of 4 or 5 things that I buy from that place.

I spent $500 something for dinner last night at an omakase that was half cooked food. I almost thought it was a poor man's kaiseki. Anyway, ceviche was one course. We were fumigated by the robata grill next door too. No I wasn't happy with the food nor the service but blowing away money makes me and the dinner date happy.

The waitress who handles the sake recognized me. This is sad isn't it? Or happy? She said she served me at another Japanese outlet. Again I wonder if it's how much I tip or how I dress. Probably dozens of people like me in this restaurant nestled off Toronto's equivalent of Chicago's mink mile.

Having my second pint standing in a pub for lunch after being rejected by two female lunch dates.

Beer on an empty stomach.

So a few days ago, 2 convicted murderers escaped from an upstate NY state jail. They have been on the run for 6 days(I believe.)

My brother who is a state corrections officer(not the same facility) is a part of a CERT team(advanced first responder team) and they have been activated and they are being sent further upstate tonight to help catch those guys. He just text'd me.

Hope to see him on TV with his knee on the back of one of those guy's head after they are caught!
(If they ever are.)

The air conditioning is broken at work and all the dummies that don't know how to dress for warm weather are falling to pieces. I'm comfortable, for once.

What's warm weather?

I can wear suit and tie stationary indoors up to about 35c.

It's a special day for someone today and I literally got a message whilst walking on the street at lunch and found myself on the opposite side of them on the same block today.

So my sis in law invited me up to their place this Sunday for a Father's Day BBQ. Invite was a few weeks ago. Not crazy about heading up there(a little over 1 hour from midtown Manhattan) on a Sunday and boozing all day unless I am off on Monday.

So my brother and his team are still further upstate looking for the 2 escaped murderers. That right there is my out! No need for a Father's Day BBQ if he isn't home. I have no kids....he has 2.

(My bro has been texting me some crazy pictures of what they are doing/where they are looking/swamps/etc. He was also captured on a CNN picture that he sent me. They are getting paid the normal 8 hours and then 16 hours OT for every day that they work. So he is gonna have a nice paycheck coming up.)

I was in a dark windowless bar for lunch. Three vodkas.

People came in and out but when I arrived there were two men at the corner of the bar drinking. By the time I left, the man had 5 beers and the other one 4 double rye and ginger. I had a suspicion they were in insurance then I found out they were insurance brokers. We're the only industry that still drinks like that and considers it work. The man's grandfather was a broker too and apparently frequented the bar two generations ago.

Moving to a better job and a bigger apartment in a slightly more exciting part of London in a week or two, depending on those pesky background checks.

Fwiffo Fwiffo I couldn't even imagine drinking at lunch time (if I had the time for it). I'd probably get fired on the spot. However, being still drunk from the night before is not an issue, as long as it's from a work related event. Weird how that works.

Congrats on the new place and job Monkey

Thanks Rambo! It sounds a bit odd, but I can't wait to start working again. Sitting around and answering all kinds of odd background check questions is no fun. For example, what specific dates did you work that summer job when you were 16 (month and day) and do you have a reference? Of course I don't, I barely even remember having a summer job. Do you still have the plane tickets for that time you went on a a month long trip 5 years ago? No, e tickets weren't that common back then, and I sure as hell don't have the paper tickets anymore.

I think I got a good deal on the apartment though, as the market is slowing down a bit. The rent is only 200/month more, but the apartment is about twice the size and valued at about 500k more than my current one. It's a bit hipsterish, but if I don't end up liking it I can always find something else in 6 months time.

Sounds like you were getting screwed on rent before. Location smocation.

Not really, the market was crazy last year. Apartments were gone as soon as they were on the market. I must've called about 50 places, and they were all let agreed already, sometimes for more than asking. Property values have declined about 10% this year, as there's less Russian and Asian money coming in.

Cheers Monkeyface Monkeyface . Good luck on the new job and securing the apartment.

I thought drinking during the day was still the English workaday life? You read articles on changing the English workers behaviour and alcoholism levels in the UK.

No, I don't know anyone who does that. Perhaps the pub lunch with a pint or two is more common for blue collar jobs? It sounds lovely, but I don't think it's very common, at least not in the city centre of London.

After work drinking is much more common though. On Thursday's and Friday's after 4:30PM most pubs will be so full that you end up drinking on the sidewalks next to the pub. Not that I'm ever out of the office by that time, but it's a nice tradition. Makes for a lively city. To be honest, I'm usually too exhausted to go out drinking by the time my week is over. I normally stick to Saturdays. Pretty boring, eh?

Boring? You do what works for you.

I like the way you look at it. It's quality over quantity these days. Instead of drinking pints a couple of days a week, I drink a good whisky, rum or gin on Saturdays.

City centre? I'm usually at The Lamb at lunch time. I know at least one former work mate who "needs" 3 pints before he goes back to mindlessly keying in bordereau transactions.

Other favourites for me - Counting House, The Swan.

Sounds like you have a sweet job. Thanks for the recommendations. I still have a week or two off, but I'll make sure to check those out once I start working again. After work that is, as I don't have lunchtime off.

Do you go to the pub by yourself for lunch, or do you usually meet up with friends or coworkers?

I'll buy you a couple of drinks sometime next week for lunchtime if you're up for it. I'm bored during the day as all my friends have jobs, and I don't know anything about insurance. Might come in handy sometime. Or are you not located in London?

I must admit I'm a bit amazed at tales of drinking at lunch time and returning to work.

Not anymore. I pop over once a year to check on them. Last time was end of April. Before? I might message a few people to see if they're up for it but usually I just bump into people in Leadenhall Market. I'll let you know next time I'm in town.‎

Insurance was born in London. Lloyd's. Placing a bet on ships going safely to the new world and back.

I'm amazed as well. I mean, have these gumshoes ever heard of the office bottle?

I have a bottle at work but what's the point of drinking by yourself in your office? I'm not doing three martini lunches every day. ‎

I do most of my serious work in the morning. Afternoons are for more pedestrian things or playing around with a spreadsheet. Sometimes sitting at a bar helps me come up with presentation ideas. I write on my mobile but I've been known to sketch on cocktail napkins.‎

Obviously if I'm delivering a senior management presentation in the afternoon I'm not about to get sloshed beforehand.

I just won a blues gospel holy grail from the largest blues collector in the world for only 25% of my max bid !!

Almost had a heart attack at the end thinking my snipe didn't go through with such 'low' price.

Damnit fx, RJ's not grail status and he sold his soul to the devil anyways. I will say this artist is on the same record label as RJ though.

:ninjatroll:

Video of RJ is a small joke - as is my claim to some I had a CD of Buddy Bolden.

I supposes its an in joke.
