What's Making You Happy Today?

48/50 on Chinese commercial law paper I wrote at the last minute, and submitted (late) without even proofreading.

Thank God for idiots and bell curve marking.

Same label - Vocalian Race Record?

I had it mixed up, just same color, Decca from 1935 which would typically be too modern for my tastes but time moved slower in some of the southern areas luckily. Just checked my Dixon, Godrich & Rye and most of his stuff was unreleased, hate when that happens.

I took my cousin out for a pre-birthday bash. Cheque came to around $380 for omakase plus one sake tasting and I was downing my own bottle of wine - although it was a bit hard for me to finish as I had two old fashioneds at another bar, 4 ryes on a patio, and a glass of wine at lunch. Sent her back home on Uber black car too, so that was another $130 ride.

But which restaurant was this?

Just had my 1960s brunch with my parents and their uni mate - over Beatles' Twist and Shout in a blazer with a pocket square. The pot of Earl Grey courtesy of Harrod's was delightful.

A Million Random Digits with 100,000 Normal Deviates Paperback – October 23, 2001
5 Stars, 1 Reservation
By M. Hall on December 5, 2005
Format: Paperback
After exploring the "Search Inside This Book" feature and snooping through a few of the embedded prose poems, I knew that this was a book I needed on my shelf. (Though I do admit I ordered it (ostensibly) for my girlfriend's birthday--and borrowed it when she was done!) I finished the tome in one enraptured sitting and, despite a limp third act denouement, the book was taut, well paced, and fresh.

I do, however, have one concern. I stumbled upon the book while looking up the ISBN number for Haynes' Owner Workshop Manual for Honda 2-valve Twins (1977 - 1985) -- and I got to thinking... Perhaps running across ISBN# 1 85010 359 3 in Rand's "A Million Random Digits" wasn't a coincidence -- perhaps some of the digits aren't that *random* at all. I don't mean to be an alarmist--and I certainly don't bandy about charges of plagiarism lightly--but if you will, please note this excerpt from the author's tender preface:

738 9377504 03478 47589 43 705 47309 67490 27348 57490 57443509 37405 40978 39794 "31847 57303!" 57049 325740 57403 7509347?

Now, we can't help but notice a completely different "voice" littered throughout the book. For example, in the opening of the penultimate chapter:

704478 489 705 47390 278 574409 3705 978794 9847 57303 57049 32740 574035093 473

Or the crassness in the "bedroom" scene:

473268978 971 23473 3785 [expletive] 3434987 3490809 34709 34908 40700 34087 439874 97835

And after the embarrassment (we'd all rather forget) concerning Wm. T Metzger's otherwise breathtaking "Table of 10,000 square roots: Gives square roots up to 4 digits on the basis of the square roots arranged in consecutive order 1 to 10,000 and the numbers ranging from 1 to 100,000,000" the publishing world can't afford another snafu.

Just blew another $500 on gold medal basketball tickets and dinner with my parents and my father's cousin. I'm happy that I can still do it with them and they're mobile enough to take transit into the city.

This week will be strange as all of the women preoccupied or out of town. I haven't even a single social activity booked for this upcoming week.

I'm flattered. There was a resignation at work in an adjacent department, and it potentially opens up a position that one of my former (and departed) directs was recently certified to take on except she wouldn't consider it unless it would be to work directly for me.

So is this good news in regards to getting you a new and better job?

No, the vacancy is two levels below me in the same firm.

It usually works more like this: I go and get a job and open up a small gold mine, then I enlist my former staff and peers to come work with or for me. I don't know why I always end up being the person who discovers and opens that door, but it has happened twice.

My archnemesis at work has to deal with the departure of yet another of her cronies. She only has one crony left. I like how it's the crony's farewell party (cake and all) and only one person from my department bothered to attend (or maybe he's in the toilet, I can't really tell).

No -wait, he was over there. He actually tried to get me to sign her "best wishes" card. I refused. I said I'd sign a "piss off" or "sod off" card. But no such card was available.

fwifo - thought about applying for a job in the Diplomatic Service?

Yea mate but my options are shrinking. US to Cuba and US to Iran are unavailable. Since I live in a Zionist country (only Canadians know our foreign policy is dictated by domestic vote grabbing) I reckon I can be Canada-Iran or Canada-Russia.

Or I can work for Israel. Netanyahu. "Here's my terms for Palestine: Jerusalem is ours - forever."

You can cross me once. But you do it twice, I will not forgive -- and you are at a disadvantage because I remember.

I'm on my third old fashioned, after 3 double johnnie blacks, 1 manhattan, 3 ryes. Lagavulin 16 next. I still remember.

Fwiff will need heart stints in a few years.

Why? I have lower than normal blood pressure and a 64 rest rate. It crept up and I get excited by little things (like walking up stairs) but I'm fine. I checked in for a "fake" stroke 18 months ago.

Just so long as his hair doesn't fall out I think he'll be ok with it.

Wish mine would end up like Roger Sterling's.

One for the road - that beloved term I learnt from an English underwriter when I was a wee lad in Montreal.

I'm breathing out peat at the moment.

You know what was remarkable? I came back to my flat. Hung up my suit. Even took out the collar stays and prepped the shirt's collar and cuffs for wash. Put all my links, pocket square, lighter, card wallet, money clip, cigarettes where they belong. Put the trees in my shoes and cleared out the pan in the sink. Only thing I missed was the keys being still in my jacket pocket. Muscle memory.

Trees in shoes on coming home from a night on the piss?

Hanging suit up?

Loser.

That's the thing mate. I wasn't even sloshed with that amount. Alcohol is like women, you just keep chasing more and more to find that initial virgin experience.

Third glass of wine for lunch now. Steak frites - but I heeded forum members' concerns, I got rid of the frites and got broccoli.

steak broccoli sounds decidedly less exciting
Having it in a men's only club was also less exciting but I needed to make my minimum spending.

I haven't had a meal there since last year but the hostess, wait staff and bartender all remember me.

It's Caribana weekend. I am decidedly doing the most anti Caribbean/black people activity - going to my parents where 90 percent of the people are white and usually Anglo Saxon and spending some of it in a pub owned by a Scotsman.

My brother just got engaged. We had lunch with the family and the fiancée. Now they're downstairs having tea.

Congrats Fwiffo. Hope she brings him happiness.

Cheers mate.

You tell them you'd be with them now if they were drinking whiskey?

No, I was upstairs in front of my work laptop trying to finish some things. I also find my future sister in law dreadfully boring and tiresome. She moved into the neighbourhood and I literally walked right past her in a store even after she greeted me.

I'm convinced the Diplomatic Service is your future career.

I shall be on my best behaviour next weekend when I meet the lot of them for the first time in a summer fete.

Curious whether the event calls for seersucker or morning dress and top hat.

Ask Tibor

Is that the chap with the fedoras?

I didn't know he was on here.

I'm happy today because I think the pain two or three ribs up on the left side of my chest is muscular and not a dull ache or a sharp pain indicating my lifestyle is catching up to me. Spending an hour hitting balls at the driving range didn't seem to help.

Oh also I've been sober for 48 hours and haven't had a cigarette in 72 hours.
