Grear weather to drive

3 ryes, 3 glasses of wine and 4 old fashioneds later and I'm in pretty good shape at 11am to hit the driving range. Granted I got home at 1am and decided it was a good idea to fire up some kebabs I had marinating in the refrigerator.

I will have to drive to the driving range. Maybe another hour or two will do it.

Usually my father drives me but he's on the ship steaming towards you mate. Just passed Hawaii.
 
Hockey Season is almost starting up and the good Canadian in me is excited. I used to hate Zombie Nation because the Maple Laffs used it, but now Boston does and any good Canadian knows what Boston did to Toronto a couple seasons ago.
 
The clean flavor of iodine in a well made Pinotage. That is a South African wine varietal. A blend of Pinor Noir and a local grape whose name escapes me. It has a flavor of.....well, iodine.

Ah. I'd never heard of that wine, nor tasted iodine. Is that a thing where you come from, drinking iodine?
 
It is a retained talent from a former profession, to be able to both note and speak about the flavors that some wines produce. I happen to be drinking this wine tonight and it had that flavor and it reminded me of both my education on the topic and my former profession.

Actually, "The Trad" posted on instagram today about a wine varietal called Lagrein that I haven't thought of in a couple of years and makes for a hearty drinking red.

fascinating. i completely lack the advanced tasting skills. i'll drink any old thing so long as its tasty and alcoholic.
 
I can talk wine all night too. Used to work at a Bastianich joint with several hundred Italian wines on the list and I was assistant to the sommelier. Sometimes people will look at me strange for swirling my wine glass at a restaurant, or even worse for using my hands to eat a peasant dish.

Clue: I worked with a Polish, two Russians, one Greek, one Indian, one Italian, and one Long Islander.
 
I had a work acquintance who was a devout Seventh Day Adventist follower. I do not have any idea what that means. He was a terrific resource of wine knowledge, refused to work a night shift on Fridays and introduced me to good coffee. He also worked for one of the Bastianich run restaurants.
I have not seen or thought of him in about 10 years.

I thought SDA couldn't partake of alcohol, tea, coffee or cigarettes.

I thought that was the Mormons. Of course, it could apply to both groups.

I think that it's only Mormons that get to wear the special undergarments, though.

I used to wonder about this. Initially I thought it was a convenient time to avoid Friday night shifts, though he'd happily gobble up Sunday lunches in exchange, when most of us were suffering from terrific hangovers.
 
Fair enough. Do you remember the moment in your life when you hear something for the first time that made you stop and think? For me it was "Hunger Strike" I remember hearing that, at 15 or 16 and it spoke to me. It was different. I knew it was important. That's corny now of course.

Caffeine is off the "don't do" list now. They are supposed to take a vow against alcohol and tobacco at baptism
 
Saw Pearl Jam in '91 at Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill just after they released 10. Small venue. Amazing show. Saw them in 2011 with my son when they came through town with Mudhoney. Still amazing. Vedder fucked up the lyrics of "Running Back to Saskatoon" throughout. rest of the band played it well. He pulled a kid out of the audience to sing it and he did pretty well.
 
After nearly a week of not seeing anyone remotely related to my family or extended family, it was nice to have a Saturday night dinner with whomever was around (my parents are still on their cruise). My uncle still continued our tradition of the men shuffling up after the women have left the dinner table and breaking out the brandy. In our yesteryear, that number would have included my grandfather and possibly cigars.
 
I left work a quarter past 12 to push up a 1 meeting over pints at lunch. Then I had Egyptian food (hummus, babaghanoush, etc) and then a bottle of wine and armagnac. Then I moved to a home bar - glass of wine and now whisky.
