What's Making You Happy Today?

Usually the leaves on the trees turn colour by now but our recent heat has everything still looking like summer

I guess I was too happy to post, but last week I went to a really good conference in Galveston.

And this week isn’t sucking either, so far.

Was that the one where you were networking with a cold? How were the libations?

That’s the one.

The first night, one of the smaller vendors sponsored a pool party with margarita at the Hilton that was a lot of fun.

The second and final night was the big beach party, which was actually a mediocre beach, a bad band, mosquito infestation and an open bar consisting of bottom shelf beer and wine. I didn’t stay long.

Lana Turner was hot as donut grease.

She used to run with Johnny Stompanato, who bit off more than he could chew pointing a gun at James Bond, and was then found by Policia federal on the outskirts of Tijuana with his balls stuffed in his mouth.

Government employees going to sponsor alcohol fueled pool parties? That’s a big no-no. Don’t you have an anti-bribery policy?

Apparently not in my state. We have ethics rules, but I guess no one cares if your not purchasing anything from the vendor?

Welcome to 2017

What's a mosquito infestation? I feel bad for the wait and bar staff now - going home at some ungodly hour with bites like a leper.

Post-hurricane the mosquitoes in Galveston are diabolical at sunset. I think that might have been part of the reason the band sounded so bad.

That also gave our zoonotic experts an excuse to drone on about vector control and types of mosquitos.

I notice the Americans are still into corporate hospitality. Over here the golf days, all-inclusive days at the races and such like are well and truly over. Even a bottle of wine or whisky at Christmas is a waste of time. Unlikely to go to the person intended, more often than not into the draw and someone you don't deal with in the mail room will get it.

From what I’ve seen in healthcare (no one would want to bribe me), it’s a little more subtle than the old bottle of scotch at Xmas. Now the vendors will invite a few dozen people to their exec box at a concert or sporting event, host a networking event on the skeet or golf range followed by a dinner. The people accepting the invitation will claim it’s a chance to network with their peers at other hospitals. Or that, since the whole office went, it clearly wasn’t an attempt to influence the contract managers. Even though at least one major hospital has a $20 max gift policy that is always flouted.

My company's newest policy says contests of chance where you draw for a prize are okay. If I convince some vendor to have a contest with only me participating or a contest where there's a prize for every contestant - that's okay?

Went to see Midnight Oil last night with some old school friends.

Midnight Oil was the first band I saw in concert, with the same school friends back when we were actually at high school together. I think that I've seen them play live five times now, but the last time was almost twenty years ago.

Peter Garrett still has amazing energy, particularly as he is now 64 years old. The band played for just over two hours, with two encore performances. Brilliant.

Never seen the Oils live. They never really grabbed me for some reason. My little brother loved them and much later got to be on Conservation Australia committee which Garrett chaired.

I'm desperate to see The Teskey Brothers but they have got a bit famous and have been sold out or playing when I'm out of town or busy that night.

A great band, they didn't make any impact in the UK until about 1988. That's when I got into them.

When my eldest daughter was a baby, she took a liking to the Beds Are Burning video.

6 bogies, 5 pars, 1 birdie. #&$* yeah.

It was a pony course but did wonders for my ego.

I never liked that whole Aus pub rock scene (OilsBarnseyFarnseyDeisel, etc) with a possible exception for the Divynals.

My only regret is not seeing The Birthday Party or The Saints back in their heyday.

In the 80s-90s I was a total Anglophile, musically. I think I owned the entire Creation Records catalogue.

I saw Ed Kuepper (formerly of The Saints) a couple of times in the late 1990s. He played a few Saints songs, as well as a lot of his own, solo stuff. His solo stuff is different from The Saints, but very good - Electrical Storm, Honey Steel's Gold, It's Lunacy, The Way I Made You Feel and others.

Why buy a new car?

You can get some good deals, my Missus just got offered a good one from Toyota to trade in her current model, but alas, she's determined to hang on until the full electric cars come out in force. Now is the time to get rid I tell her, but she's not listening.

2017 Honda Civic EX-T Sedan. Needed something smaller and fuel efficient to get around town as a 2nd car.

Booorrriiiing. Bet you’re one of those types that drives in the left lane 5 miles under the speed limit.

I believe more donations are required if people want him to drive a luxury car.
