Your top three tie brands

Chorn I really like that HY

What width is it?

3 inches. It's one of my most worn ties.

I'm thinking I might need to replace Panta with Howard Yount for my top 3 list. The quality of Panta is obviously superior, but I own more Howard Yount (6 HY vs 4 Panta) and looking at their selections, there are at least twice as many Howard Younts that I want.

This may be heresy, but I think ties, when compared to other garments, have sharply diminishing returns the more you pay. I have a handful of expensive ties, but they are certainly not twice or thrice as nice than most $50.00 department store ties.

This should go in the Challenging iGents thread.

I'd say the benefits really start diminishing at around the 80 dollar price point. But there is a big difference between a 50 dollar mall brand tie and an 80 dollar Hober. Smaller difference between an 80 dollar Hober and a 150 dollar Drakes (though Drakes does many things that Hober doesn't which is why I'll still pay the difference occasionally).

I guess that's a part of it. It isn't just the quality that changes...the level of difficulty in producing the tie also increases.

What were the Drake's tie prices like before they got bought out and marketed to the new upper class?

It's been years since I bought a tie and I doubt I've ever paid more than $40, so my best brands are boring: Brooks Brothers, Ralph Lauren's various brands, Ben Silver.
I have one that is marked "Made Exclusively for Neimann Marcus by Robert Stewart, Hartford, CT Est 1919" and it's nice but I can't find any info on the maker. Old Lands'End are good, no idea about the new ones.

Jusr wondered; I have a few from the early 2000's that are made in England. Then several made in France and a few in Morocco. The former I had heard was made by Drakes.

I don't have the luxury of having access to a Drakes storefront, but fortunately Unipair carries them here without too much a mark-up.

When I was in Milan last Friday it looked like a shop called Castellani had some Marinella ties in the window. Looked gorgeous.

hmm, don't think I've been there.
there is also a nice Marinella shop in Milan, but about 20 euros more expensive per tie than Naples.

1. Our Mate Pat too (aka E.G. Cappelli Patrizio Cappelli Cravatte Sartoriali Napoli Store P.Iva 07733880632)
2. E. Marinella
3. Battistoni (a very very nice shop in general)

no its the naples rebate because they dont pay their taxes there

No, it is passive protection money so that when you are robbed in Naples by the camorra you have 20 more euros per tie in your wallet. Direct withdrawal. Tie maker does not have to be middle man or deal with any 'friendly neighborhood visitors'.

I don't have huge numbers of ties, so I don't mind splashing out a bit when I do buy one. In recent years I've only bought ties from Drake's, Turnbull & Asser, Fox Bros. (2), Budd (1), and Exquisite Trimmings (own brand black grenadine for a funeral).

I could only really do a top 2, which would be Drake's and T&A. In terms of sharply diminishing returns, I think that's probably true. I'm sure I could tell my Drake's grenadines from my ET grenadine with the labels removed, although the ET one is much better value at half the price.

Drake's really stand out for me - they're overpriced, but in fairness I don't think by much.

I used (in my younger days) to love Pancaldi, although I don't think I could wear many of them now.

I've got several Drake's ties and some are nice, some are a bit flimsy and the silk tends to twist a bit too easily.

My main problem with them nowadays, though, is that almost all of their ties nowadays are ridiculously narrow. I even wrote to them a few years back, asking them why all of the ties on their website were either 7cm or 8cm wide, and why they didn't have any 9cm or 9.5cm wide ties as they used to do, and someone from Drake's wrote back to say that narrower ties were trendy now so that was what they were making! So much for style, rather than fashion...

That is a bit disappointing, but 8cm is just right for me. 7cm would be too narrow for most people without it looking like a fashion statement.

9.5cm sounds pretty wide, unless you lift, or eat, like a boss.

I have two Dolcepunta ties. Nicely made. Thick thirst and make great knots & dimples. Certainly not worth the retail when compared to LKP LKP 's, ConchitaWurst ConchitaWurst 's & FriendCustomer FriendCustomer 's mate Pat. Can be a bit tacky in their designs too.

But a solid tie to consider when on sale.

Two years on I love neats, contrary to my attitude at the start of the thread.

My top three seems about the same: Hober, Panta and I'll say Henry Carter instead of Drakes; Drakes does a bit too much shark jumping these days. Of the three Cappelli's I have, I only absolutely love one. But I know they are excellent ties.

i'd rather wear 9.5 than 8

Some recent thirsts. I have to be honest and admit that these lack years on their shoulders.

Top three are Drake's, bottom one is Exquisite Trimmings. The blue one at the top makes me go over the top, it really is lovely.

What is wrong with Drakes these days, and who owns Drakes now?

I don't know if the owners are still the same, but the last I knew, Drake's was owned by the same company that is behind The Armoury stores in HK and NY City.

I quite like Drake's ties, although I think that they are a bit too expensive, but I haven't bought any for the past six or seven years as they insist on making their ties in 8cm widths. When I sent them an e-mail years ago to ask if they had any wider ties, someone from Drake's responded to me to say that they only make 8cm wide ties as that is the width that is popular right now.
