Adventures in Bespoke Tailoring

But how many orders have you given them over the past years? I'm sure you qualify as a TopTopElite™ customer...

However many it takes to have them meet out of hours apparently.

I think that generally they may not do it for the first order, but once you are established things can be arranged. Is that your view?

My tailor will meet me on a Saturday or an evening if I need them to.

They're willing to do 6pm now, so that should work for me once in a while. I'll only have to leave an hour or two early from work.

General question: does a tailor always need to do fittings? Let's say I get fitted for a couple suits and jackets (4-5) between now and possible moving. Would I just be able to order from a distance from then on and they ship the finish product? I've seen one or two on SF do that.

See, you are good to go then, just had to ask.

If a tailor doesn't do fittings he wouldn't be my tailor.

I think you can get away with one fitting - provided, of course, that your shape does not change drastically. If it does change, then two may be necessary. But I would not suggest "no fitting" bespoke. Too many variables. With respect to my jacket from Chris, we only needed one fitting. Further, if minor adjustments need to be made, we can always address them at a later date.

we stayed there for quite some time. talking about lengths of cloth needed for a suit. mainly because there wasnt very much of the sportex by modern standards (3m+ for an average guy). he told us that in the old days when there were tons of young boys working at the sartorias they cut suits for an average guy from 2.3 meters. telling that it would take an apprentice a full (italian) working day for this job because you needed every cm of cloth.

this keeps hope alive. and means sandyman probably wasnt bullshitting us about his old english tailor

Interesting. It's probably a function of hourly wage vs cost of extra meter of cloth.

I had a very elegant cab driver this morning. Bespoke suit in brown pin stripe with shirt shoulder, lapped seams, one button cuff and a nice regimental tie.
