All About Watches

Is it just me or does this look... terrible? Like, I thought it was a Citizen Ecodrive terrible.

I quite like the AP Royal Oak - the classic, original style by Genta, not the utter abominations that have been churned out by AP over the decades as the watch became larger and larger and more and more unattractive and gimmicky.

However, I'm most certainly not willing to spend $20 000 or more to get a 15202 model.

They have to churn out the chunky ones to compete with the whimsy and bad taste of footballers, pimps, minstrel gangsta rappers and new money in general.

In saying that, I saw one of those Seiko 7 series Astron's the SAS037 and 038 to be exact: what an overly large, strangely beautiful and garrish dome of a thing. I can see how people can be seduced by such a watch. I've only seen people in airports with Astron's on. Mainly Americans.

I would like to get one of the Astron series just to see if they could seduce you long term, or whether they would feel like a toy watch after a couple of wears.

You're in luck!

There's nothing good in that photo.

Interestingly, I just did a search for "Astromaster" watch and discovered that the model worn in the photo above was called a "Buler Astromaster" and was apparently made in the mid-1970s, a few years after the AP Royal Oak was first introduced.

Apparently, "homage" watches were a thing back in the 1970s, too!

5 minutes of Googling also leads me to conclude there is some debate about which watch had the design first, so maybe the Royal Oak is a homage watch to the Assmaster!

It should also be noted that the Assmaster's innards are apparently verri shitty, inaccurate movements made on the cheap and designed to be thrown away when they wore out in short measure.

So all in all, the perfect watch for the wearer above ymmv.

What watch would you sport if you where on the bones of your arse, a poor student, or just extremely tight fisted?

I would get the Swatch Twice Again:

https://www.swatch.com/en/watches/suob705-twice-again/

And if I had slightly more budget, this Citizen:

Around that price range, and if a Swatch it must be, my suggestion would be Sistem51:

Otherwise, a Timex Weekender should do just fine:

38mm size is ideal for the Speedmaster, that's what the Speedmaster Redux got right, along with the price. Where they went wrong was rubbing everyone's nose in it who had bought one with the message delivered in advertorials "It's not a moon watch though, definitely not a moon watch, naah it's not a moon watch at all" as though everyone who bought a Speedmaster moon watch had a watch that had been taken to the moon and back. The other thing they got wrong with the Redux was the awful piggy-back calibration that was shockingly proned to having to be taken back under guarantee to be fixed. Mine went back three times in the first year.

The watch chap I use to do my deals with use to have one of the originals back in his shop, with the orange flourescent markers, he's gone now, he must have came into some money as he suddenly only wanted to sell 3 watches a week which was not enough for prime real estate like that. The Monaco was everywhere a decade ago and after Walter White left his in a phone box and the ongoing decline of Tag, could you be seen sporting one?

I'd rock the Monaco. It's a timeless design. Most all of the other Tags are shit.

The Tag Aquaracer is still one of the most basic good value mechanical watches out.

They make a ton of over priced fashion stuff though.

ETA of about six weeks. There will a new fappening at such time.
Sweet.

Picked up my GS today. Very happy - it's a pearler of a watch. Downside is I'm not at all sure I can justify two new steel sport/dress watches in short measure, so might have to nix my O/S plans.

That said I'll still have a look what's around when I'm in Brazil in case there could be a deal I can't refuse.

Can't wait for the commemorative "1,265th Commemorative Moonwatch Speedmaster Since 2000 - Did We Mention The Moon??" special edition Speedmaster, with a $1,265 premium over the original Moonwatch.

Couldn't be more worthless than the one they recently released in honour of a hashtag.

I don't think you'll get much of a deal there on luxury watches.

I'm still debating the Seiko Cocktail time with the sunburst blue dial. I like the texture of this and that subtle blue. But it's a big chunky thing in the flesh, I would have made the size smaller, say 35/36mm. It's cost effective enough though, around Euros 450 in the Seiko boutique in Amsterdam:

I like this too, the Soviets answer to a moonwatch:

Looks a fine reasonably priced piece, but would like to see one first. Here's the official webpage, I like the look of several of these beauts:

i picked one up on a massdrop last year. its a nice watch. not really blue though.

Yeah, it's kinda a blue hue only at certain angles and light. I read somewhere that's to do with the design coming from Japan's top cocktail waiter and the watch being designed to be worn in the neon haze of a bar. I like this idea, even though I don't go to bars anymore.
