All About Watches

If it didn't rip off so many elements from a Royal Oak and didn't have 'Laureato' on the dial, I could really, really dig this. I probably prefer the design to the AP actually as it doesn't have the superfluous gold bezel screws that Thruth Thruth is so fond of.
But jesus, it even has a "GP" at 12 instead of an "AP"...:lolguy:

I really feel sorry for the schmucks that paid $5k more last year for the 'limited edition' - which is limited in the sense that the performance of those watches is more limited than the new full production models.

Can never have enough screws, good or otherwise

Brazil is great, you just need to not stray far from Ipanema and Leblon and be careful what you pick-up in Copacabana's Help disco. Never marry one though, they don't travel well to more temperate climes and then there's half of Rocinha fevala you will be expected to keep. Not a good move that, ruined many a good man.

Lord Buckley Lord Buckley sorry to say I was disappointed to find Help disco has been closed for a few years now. I have had to amuse myself in various dives around Lapa instead.

Not Acme. AliExpress

Yes, except what if you want to buy less than 30,000 units?

Yes, keep on forgetting my time there now is nearly 20 years ago. My old haunts may already be gone, or changed beyond recognition. Probably not a good idea for me to go back.

Lapa was where Ronnie Briggs had his bar, a good couple of small music venues there and you had that guitar music from the 1920s that came from there, when Lapa was the place to be. It was also the place you went if you wanted lady boys in my time.

I always kept myself in the relatively safe south zones of Ipanema, Leblon and the occasional trip to Copacabana's Help at night.

I know nothing about watches, so some questions for you all.

1). what is a great entry level price to get a really good watch?
2). can you recommend some really good watches that don't cost too much. Eg, l don't want to pay 10K, l just want a decent watch that is really simple and not too expensive.

Well how much DO you want to pay?

Give us some examples of what you'd consider a "great" watch.

1) are you interested in pre-owned or do you have to be first one to jack-off with this watch (fully naked and in front of a mirror, of course)?
2) are you looking for a classic dress watch or something sportier?
3) what is your budget?

Living in a damp and inclement North Sea climate, then Dainite soles are the way to go. I notice Edward Green now have a wide range of Dainite sole offerings too. But what they have to do Vulcain watches?

If you're not a watch person, but you want an entry level quality watch of some distinction, then I would suggest an Ole Mathiesen, one of these:

They're simple and discreet. However, not sure you can get them readily in Australia?

A great high street option is a Longines and in their current Heritage range is this beaut, the Railroad:

Alternatively, a Seiko, perhaps one from their Presage range. You will be getting in-house movements which watch aficionados get all excited about and in the higher range watches you're getting quality that Swiss watch makers deliver for a good Euros 1000 more than the equivalent Seiko. The only problem there is one of status, Seiko kept all their truly great watches for the domestic market only for many years, so they're still considered a cheap and cheery option by many. They are the watch brand equivalent of Toyota.

It depends what you value in a watch Shooey - if its just something smart that tells the time there are no shortage of well-priced options. Like a Timex for example.

But let me put it this way, you can walk into Myer and buy a pair of glued-sole, black leather shoes that look ok and protect your feet from the concrete. But there's no craft and nothing intrinsically interesting about them... I can't imagine you ever wearing a pair of shoes like that, so why would you settle for the equivalent in a watch?

Why you no buy? Also you ever come down to MIA?

Overseas has taken up the watch budget for the near future.

I generally get to MIA once or twice a year, but I haven't been lately due to work and kid commitments. Hopefully next season I'll get back down to the Grove.

Ah got you! Well if you ever come let me know, dont tell Rambo though, he is too shy to come out of his cave.

Suddenly, the Rolex Explorer II Polar looks more interesting. Hafez al-Assad's personal watch:

Someone I knew better than I should have had a Explorer II that had fallen off the back of a lorry. One weekend having taken too much whizz and weed found himself in a state of rampant paranoia and decided to hide the Rolex from the heat that he knew were closing in and about to break down the door and arrest him at any moment. Having hidden the Rolex safely away he forgot where he had hidden it and it was never seen again.

very pretty

how do you find the thickness?

Well they're not ultrathin watches by any stretch but I wouldn't call them thick either - 'solid' is probably the right term. The regular hi-beat and the 037 are 13mm thick or just under, but they seem to wear thinner than that number suggests. They're about the same as a GMT Master, only you don't have a great big ratchet bezel flaring out on top, and the flanks of the case are nicely sloped so I have no problems sliding it under pretty tight dress cuffs. The clasp on the bracelet it also very low profile so the overall girth is modest IMO, particularly by today's standards.

Not my pic but you get the idea:

As for the regular auto models, they're a slightly smaller diameter but a bit thicker again than the hi-beat models - so it might feel more barrel-shaped, I dunno as I haven't tried one on. I would think it's probably in acceptable territory for a sporty watch like that though.
