Old formsta has picked up his second 'lex...

If you can get permission from the Missus. Next bonus for me, will be 2019 or 2020 the way things are looking. The bad times are going to continue as were locked into low rates and the vagaries of exchange rates for the next 12-18 months.

I started off liking the Black Bay more, but now, I think the Pelagos has got more staying power as a classic.

What did Rolex did you go for?

I don't need NO permission from the missus. If I want, I buy...

Which Rolex? White Milgauss.

Some think the Pelagos is the watch that the Submariner should be...

You're last one was not a Milgauss? The green and orange one is great. I like it. No, it was the green bezel Sub?

The Pelagos is the update to the Submariner tool watch. Absolutely.

Whether that will date or not, is up in the air at the moment. It looks modern, right for the time, but whether it will be a classic is still to be proven. But I'm convinced it is.

My first was the Green Sub date. I went with the intention of buying the Milgauss GV but when I told the saleswoman that green was my favourite colour she asked me had I not considered the green sub, which luckily they had only just taken delivery of. I liked it and bought it. (serendipitous given the short supply)

Regards, the white Milgauss, I was just strangely drawn to it. Its not been a big seller, and amongst the other bling looked forlorn. So I took pity on it and bought it. I think its a bit of an ugly duckling to be honest, and some collectors I've spoken to are of the same opinion.

I won't be 'flipping' it...nor will it be a safe Queen, locked away. I wear my watches and keep them. Only when they're a bit worn, do they really become yours. A palimpsest of a sort, if you like.

I really do like the Pelagos - it's a great design.

I tried one a while back and was surprised at how large it felt on my wrist. It's not heavy - far from it, due to the titanium - but it sits up quite high on the wrist due to the case shape. I tried on a Rolex Sea Dweller at the same time and it hugged my wrist more.

If you do get a Pelagos, try to get a very lightly-used, second-hand one from the first couple of years, before Tudor introduced the in-house movement and added about five lines of text to the dial...

Have you considered getting a Green Hermes Breast Pocket Wallet?

Surprised nobody here has mentioned the silly money paid for Paul Newman’s Rolex
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5023775/Paul-Newman-s-Rolex-sold-17-7million.html

At least Jack Nicklaus Rolex kept his a long time .....and it was his only watch ....and he was top of his game.

I think that Newman was given the Rolex by his wife in 1968 or 1969, and he then gave it away to his daughter's then-boyfriend in 1984, so he held on to it for quite a while.

I must admit that I find it difficult to get excited about these auctions where people pay ludicrous prices for watches. I look at them as I do car auctions nowadays. I like both cars and watches and appreciate them for both their form and function, but collecting such things nowadays has largely become a pursuit for the super-rich. In very rare cases, the items (whether they be cars, watches or perhaps art) will be used (or displayed, in the case of art) but in most cases you can be sure that the items will be put away, preserved, as an investment.

Seriously - some guy just paid US$15.5 million plus $2 million buyer's commission for a watch. He's not going to actually wear it.

Although, having said that, perhaps Rolex bought the watch for its own archives - I know that PP routinely buys up rare Patek models for its archives, so Rolex may have done the same with the Newman Daytona.

The thing is, the Newman Daytona isn't even a nice looking watch. The current Daytona isn't attractive either.

Oh, no - are Omega really making a re-edition of the Ploprof with rose gold accents?

That's truly, abysmally awful.

They are big chunky things, the new version is a plus for me: I like the additional text and the in-house movement always a winner when it comes to selling-on. Not a big issue with the Tudor's reasonable service costs.

Very few on the second hand market. Like the Black Bay's.

Rolex supposedly manipulates the second hand market to maintain the inflated prices. And that price for Newman's watch is clearly peak market looking for a readjustment. When you see some of their mass produced models reaching 100,000's of USD just because the original sale documents are with them from 1965 or '68, it seems a lot to pay for the invisible quality of provenance.

I view the Daytona as the equivalent of a Porsche. Some middle aged chap gets really excited about them months before they pull the trigger and several months later it's gone....what they were looking for was not to be found in the watch or car.

Greatest Omega ever...

Lots of them on the second hand market, a Bond version too. But I always worry about the longevity and ease of repair on a quartz from the mid-70s.

You like'em big, the Omega?

Y'know....I kinda like that...and bi-metal TOO! Super blingy.

Like the Quartz chrono, cool, in a retro 70s way. That vertically mounted button could double up as a trigger button for the limpet mines you've just attached to the hull of your enemies yacht! Its a bit 70s Bond...

No wonder it meets with Dawgs approval...!!!!

It's all about functionality my man. Never know when you are going to have to sink your nemesis.

I like a lot of 70s design. Some of it has a, what I can only describe as a 'fuck-it' attitude to it. Makes me smile. I see it as the perfect antidote to what I consider the sterility of Bauhaus influenced design which bores me senseless.

Not sure how Rolex can manipulate the used market. There seems to be something going on with the supply of new SS sports watches though. You can't find SS Subs, GMT's and Daytona's for love-nor-money. And I believe the shortage is now effecting other markets not just the UK.

There seems to be no problem with bi-metal variants though. One Rolex AD I walked passed a few weeks ago had about 6 bi-metal Daytona's in the window, a Platona and a bi-metal GMT which was perfectly vulgar and absolutely perfect.

I've actually come around to this view in my old age. Obviously in the 80s and 90s I thought it was terrible, but I dig the verve of it now.

Dealer said he is getting 25% less steel watches
But must take all sorts of cellini junk

Those Max Bill watches aren't bad. They look clean and neat. Shame about the plexi-glass. Whereas the likes of NOMOS are just boring beyond all interest.

They have to take what Rolex allocates them. Then they have to buy the one's they don't sell. You can then build-up a large collection of Cellini's that way. Waiting, all lonely, for a buyer.

Jack’s watch was a gold day date. I don’t like the clutter on the Daytona. I prefer a cleaner style.

I still have the wind up pocket watch my mother gave me as a teenager working on the farm and truck. It has a leather pouch that I wore on my belt. It flips open to see the time and does up with a big press stud. Much more practical than a wrist watch for real work.
