The problem, for Arnathor Arnathor , is that most original Heuer Monaco watches will cost twice what a new TAG Heuer Monaco will cost. He'll pay $5000 or so for the TAG re-edition, but if he wants an original from the 1970s, he'll probably have to pay anywhere from $10k to $15k. Some of the old Monacos sell for $45 - 50 000.

I think that the true, classic Heuer is an old Carrera from the 1960s. Even they typically cost a fair bit now, though.

If Arnie wants a mechanical chronograph, he should look around for an Omega Speedmaster Professional in good condition (not the "reduced" auto, but the manual-wind "moonwatch"). If he doesn't mind a quartz watch, he should have a look at the Seiko chrono that I posted a page or two back.

Great watch, but a big step in price for a second hand unit.

Obviously won't dissuade anyone from Omegas though.
 
Right now, I would be crazy to spend over $600 on a watch. Those are nice and I like the suggestions though!
 
I like this take on a chronograph - single 60 minute rather than 30min counter, discreet small secs, 40mm, very readable for a chronograph, and you can use the pushers underwater. And the price is about half that of a new Speedmaster...

It looks busy I agree but I can read the time remarkably easily nevertheless.

If I were to redesign it, I would get rid of the Ar logo and replace it with an hour counter as per the U1000, and lose the numbers on the inside of the hour markers. IMO that would make it a little less busy and add >1hr timing functionality. Also I'd lume up the chronograph counters rather than the running seconds, which is basically an expendable feature on a chronograph anyway.

Or just make a U1000 that isn't 4ft in diameter and 3ft tall like the current model.

That is a tad busy. I like the left hand crown. Would look less busy with the number on the dial gone - never liked the EZM3 dial for that reason. EZM1 has a simpler look and you still have a 60 minute counter. But if you want the chrono I understand

I gives me that 60's or 70's Jacques Cousteau or James Bond vibe. Gotta be feeling it. Not an every day unit for sure.
