Eidos? Nope. You won't even throw away the Eidos lapel pin like I tell you.

Seiko? I told you yesterday that Cousteau would not wear Seiko.

You refuse to buy Big Johnny Lobbs like you promised even after I choked down Arepas. Deal breaker.

I tell you the CC is a secretary's car. Daily.

I wasn't there when you chose the severe cutaway collar Hugo Boss shirt.

I show you pictures of real jumper boots vs Crapmina Ass Jumper boots.

Sorry Forrest, you lie like a sidewalk.

So, time to ask the big boys since Leitmotif is just a Seiko shill. (I do really like that Alpinist, though).

I'm looking to buy mysef a watch, the first proper one with my own money. Here's what I'm looking for:
1) Not a diver ideally, but willing to reconsider if it strikes me;
2) Budget in the sub 500 euro range, preferably near the 300;
3) Non quarz, though it's not exactly a deal breaker to be honest;
4) My wrists are 17 cm in circumference so I don't like huge watches;
5) Dials can be white/off white, green or blue. Black doesn't score too well with me.

There are no big boy watches in the sub-500 Euro range. And, for better or worse, Seiko dominates it.

If this is going to be your first - and, for the time being, only - serious watch, I think you are right to avoid the divers'. For the same reason, you should also avoid the Alpinist (SARB017). After all, who, except for a tactless tacky, would be proud to own a watch with a green face as the cornerstone of his watch "collection"?!!

You might want to look at other watches in the SARB range: 033 (black dial), 035 (white dial), and 065 (so-called "Cocktail Time," which has a gradient/sunburst white to ice-blue dial and is a special edition). Most of these retail in the $300-400 range. This means that you can easily ditch the default shitter bracelet/band and use the rest of your budget to get a nice aftermarket crocodile strap that complements your shoes and other leather accessories. At the end of the day, you will have a decent dress watch that can hold its own (but that is also nothing to write home about).

If you really don't want to get a Seiko and if you would still like to stay - roughly - in the same price range (without actually going through more savings and more pain to get an actual big boy's watch), why not take a look at Frederique Constant?

Oh, absolutely, I know the budget is not enough to buy the watches you guys talk about, though I thought asking could still be useful.

Well, that sunburst green and cathedral hands really do make a strong impression on me. It's a nice sporty look for sure.

SARB033 and 035 don't cut it, while the 065 is absolutely stunning. Truly beautiful and hits almost all of the right spots, aesthetics wise, on what I look for in a dress watch. The only black dial watch that I like so far is the Omega Speedmaster.

Isn't Frederique Constant much more expensive, as in twice my budget? That Slimline To be honest, I could save up for some other time, but I think that the absolute highest I'd spend would be 1000ish euros, I just can't justify at my age investing more money into it.

Frederique Constant start around 600. Dont care for the wandering jew, he talks all big but no performance.

Frankly, I would suggest continue saving for a future omega or rolex.
There are some options, Frederique Constant, Junghans, Oris, Raymond Weil, Maurice Lacroix, but I feel these will just be buyer's remorse.
500 eur now mean 500 eur less for your future rolex.

Unlike with clothes, few will wonder "hey why isn't that guy wearing any watch?".

Not really, a love of watches is not restricted to Omega or Rolex.

If you like watches and you only have €500 budget, you should go out and get a watch in that price range, either new or second hand. If you like watches, you will buy watches when and to the level your budget allows and you will have a story to tell.

Watch aficionados, I mean real watch collectors, appreciate and dig a wide spectrum of watches and at all costs. Real watch fetishists do not get off on the distinction between luxury and that of quality and distinction at an affordable price.

Yes, save up for a better watch, but enjoy watches on the way up. Serious watch aficionados have collections that cover the full spectrum of their collection tastes.

Well, I'm not a watch snob nor collector by any means, my goal would be to own one dress watch, one sports watch and a diver and actually use them, not have them sit in rotating cases because I bought them for eye candy.

Am I the only one not particularly impressed by Rolexes? Some are indeed nice, but the overhype of some models, coupled with the bulkyness and tackyness (two tone watches, really?) of many versions don't make them a favourite.

Vintage dress watch Omegas...those really look good imho.

Absolutely not! You're so unique! It's not like there's an online community of cheap wankers who have developed an entire discourse against Rolex in their existential need to deal with their middle-class insecurities and to ultimately justify the thousands of dollars they have spent in Steinharts, Hamiltons, and Squales (which could have, of course, gotten them at least one decent wristwatch in the pre-owned market).

After all, what is there to be impressed by a brand that has created some of the most recognizable designs in horology -- the visual cues of which the above brands (and Seiko and others) endlessly regurgitate to this day? Why would you be impressed, finally, by a company the majority of whose products are more stable in value than most currencies in the world?!!

Oh, look, what do we have here. Inferiority complex, argumentum ad populum and gratuitous insults, could have you tried to reason more with your head stuck up your derrière, my dear?

I will introduce you to a beautiful new topic, it's called "different tastes", you know, when I buy something I don't seek the brand name for validation or its history, I look for the quality, feel and aesthetic components, which in turn dictate its subjective value to me. I could not care less if your lack of manners leads you to indulge in a two tone metal watch because "muh history", it still looks like garbage and perfectly suits the wrist of a person that couldn't understand elegance even if it was embedded in his DNA.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to my villa in the italian hills.

Olololo.

W WildBlue you will have to forgive him. He is a newly-minted Rolexian and just as the anti-Rolex proles have screeds against he has readily taken up the "Rolex is an investment, Bitch" argument along with Rolex being God's gift to Swiss watchmaking.

Not sure why he had to go off on you just for saying you don't like the looks of Rolex. His response was much like his boyfriend Leitmotif Leitmotif treats him except without the Nazi twist.

ConchitaWurst how come you don't pimp your Reverso like RootBeer here does his top top investment-grade purchase?

Now there's a man with taste! That's my grail and exit watch.

Talking about Rolex's, I am sure you will remember Walt Odet's infamous review of the modern 2000's era Explorer I:

http://www.timezone.com/2002/09/16/the-rolex-explorer-ref-14270-part-1/

Was at the airport today and those Tudor Black Bays and the Pelagos are sorely tempting!

Out of all the rolexes one could buy as an "investment", the root beer would be the worst. A standard black sub could be easily converted into cash anywhere in the world, the root beer not so much.

No worries Thruth, I'm always fine with criticism and friendly ideas exchanges, however I just wanted to make it clear that I don't take shit from anybody, especially if that somebody is an anatomically deficient immaginary friend appeaser overcompensating person who is overprotective of a silly metal purchase.

I don't get why people get upset at Nazi jokes and the like, my grandfather was in a concentration camp and barely escaped, he never saw the topic under a bad light and would always chuckle about it, possibly because he was the prison guard. Silly things aside, the first part of the story is true, people are oversensitive about everything, just chill, if you can take a d**k you can take a joke.

Hey now, I lost a family member at Dachau.

He fell off the guard tower.

Except for the platinum Yacht-Master?

Please post some pictures of your new VC Overseas so that the poorly educated of the forum (farmers, islanders, and other rabble) see a decent watch that is not a Rolex. That one with the blue dial is my exit watch.

Of course except for the platinum Yacht master.

I will shoot some photos at some point of the VC.
