All About Watches

Monkeys are so clever
Wearing luca rubinacci-recommended shirts
And in-watches
The watches are not mine - I'd have thought the store background to be a little too obvious to demand further explication - but as a monkey, I much prefer to follow the King of Cool down to a T. Thank you very much!

About 10 years ago I had the chance to but this Auguste Reymond, the chrono moon phase from the Jazz Age:

csm_M-612S751-56u_8f7faf1bcc.webp

It was just under €2,500 at the time. It was and likely still is the smallest watch to house the ETA Valjoux 7751 movement with a case dimension of 37mm.

It was quite impressive and I ummed and ahhed that it wasn't a watch for someone in their mid-30's, now I am in my later 40's, I would get it straight away at that price. The watch is still in production, but it's going for over €4,000 now!

Don't feel bad you did the right thing.

Old man flabbergasted by the current value of a Rolex he bought decades ago. Take #2 (As a reference point and quick summary, he paid $543 [the equivalent of $3000 in today's dollars] for a solid gold Daytona in 1973. He seems to have made some profit.)

That's one ugly looking Daytona that, no matter what the value.
I'm not enamored with chronographs; they all look equally ugly to me, so I have to concur.

At any rate, beauty seems to fall by the wayside when it comes to vintage valuation. Rarity, uniqueness, condition, and provenance are much more relevant, it seems (a solid gold Daytona in good condition with original boxes and original receipt is going to be much more valuable than some stainless steel Submariner head from the same period, no matter how "ugly" we deem the former). If anything pertains to aesthetics in this market, it is "iconography" (even when it is somewhat fabricated or utterly fallacious at times): "Paul Newman Daytona," "James Bond Submariner," "Steve McQueen Explorer II," etc.

I know what you mean about chronographs, always the risk of superficial added functionality cluttering the face and dials. It works sometimes: The Speedmaster, the Longines Heritage Diver 1967 and their 1973 Heritage in white. The Monaco? Too many variants they milked it too the extreme. The CWC military chronographs, but sadly not owned by real watch makers now so the quality suffers. And then there's the Daytona, a strange watch, behind the waiting lists, like owning a Porsche the novelty soon wears off and all those I have known to own one, eventually got rid and went down market.

Jeff cohen = major cocksucker
These old men and their old watches thing has become too popular; boring already

Amazing daytona though

100k retirement fund? You kididng?

Let's say he has another 10yrs. 100k would give him an extra 10k a year, on top of his already generous pilot's retirement fund. Because he used to be a pilot he probably likes travelling, so he could use that 10k for a few really nice vacations per year. Not bad.

I really like the new Air King:

Obviously, these things are very subjective, but I don't like it.

I much prefer the old Air King design, as the new one smacks too much of taking various bits and pieces from different Rolex models and slapping them on to create a new Air King.

How can get you a few really nice vacations for 10k?
That sum is more like one semi-long okay-ish vacation

I like that, a nice watch. Are you tempted?

Very tempted, but the price dear boy. Five and half grand and in this recession I would feel somewhat guilty. So I will wait until next bonus. Sometime 2019 methinks! In the meantime I will likely go for the Tudor Black Bay 36mm in the next few months. Unless my missus gets me one of the Omega X-33's that she can get from work. They get limited batches of them at €1300 ago, but you need to be quick ordering. My missus was too slow last time. You also have to sign a statement that you won't ever sell it. Much better than the old X-33:

I can see what you're saying, Explorer number dials, a dab of Milgaus colour scheme on the wording and second hand. But I still think it's an excellent update. The Air King range had become a bit of a poodle, too small to wow and viewed as the entry level of Rolex. An update was well overdue. This stands on it's own merits.

Eh, he won't be staying at a top resort in St Barts, but he can def fly to the Caribbean and stay in a nice resort 3 times a year for 3k a pop. Pilots are used to staying in bad hotels anyways.

Anyone happy with an inexpensive quartz? My old Seiko has been going decades. No servicing required just a battery. The newer Ecodrive does not need that.

I have my fathers manual Certina but only for sentimental value. I could buy a new watch for the cost of servicing at an independent place.

You can have one very decent two week vacation on that for you and your family. You might have to ditch ordering escort girls a dozen at a time mind you. But I suppose that depends on where in the world you intend to go and whether you bring the missus with you.

What do you guys think about these over priced toy watches:

Do you plan on getting cancer removal surgery to your wrists afterwards?

What are you guys thoughts about one-watch collections? I have been trying to get a "one watch collection" for ages, but it is near impossible to get just one that tick all your boxes. So far i have considered, Omega Aqua Terra, Omega 2254, Oris Aquis and currently the IWC mark xvi. Most are in the dress hybrid genre.

A contradiction in terms.

I have an IWC, one of the Spitfire ones. Its was a legacy. Nice watch, I don't wear it much these days as I'm too frightened of damaging/losing/having it stolen given its sentimental value.

One watches collections are a bit boring, you need a wide range to cover all basis. Whilst I can see why someone collects the Omega Aqua Terra and Speedmaster special editions. I don't think it would prove ultimately satisfying long term.
