Apps

One of the estate agents I've been using has an App that pays you for exercise that you do. It monitors the steps you take. How does that work, who's paying for this?

What's the difference between that and Spotify?

Not much. Slightly different libraries and playlist formats. Amazon gives you a bit more control. For premium, Amazon has a slight edge. For free, Spotify is better. Though to be honest I wouldn’t pay full price for either.

If you're looking for premium Hi-Res streaming and a massive library of music, Qobuz is another good option. Relatively expensive for the monthly downloading in Hi-Res, but not when you factor in you'll never need to buy a hard music format again.

I have this mobile app for Air Canada. Ever since the last update it is constantly running in the background and even shows up on the notification bar of Android. I don't have any flights. I never logged in with the app - I just use it on a booking by booking basis to get tickets or do upgrades. Why does it need to "run" every X minutes?

Goddamit. I did the three (or was it longer?) month free Spotify trial, built some good playlists and now it is running out. I was hoping they might have a BF deal or something.

They have you on the hook. You'll be on escalator subscription price increases for the rest of your life. It's like being addicted to blow. Don't do it mate.

I think I'm going to uninstall Snapchat. I forgot my password and the latest upgrade logged me out. Frankly I only had an escort on my friends list there and some people I met randomly at bars with whom I never speak with after that night.

buy gift cards on sale. get on the family plan. get a trial under the wife's name.

Microsoft Edge has a new logo now in Android. I guess they wanted to further distance themselves away from Internet Explorer.

Fender Play guitar app is 50% for an annual subscription right now. I’m doing the free week trial now and it seems pretty good (especially if your musical tastes are fairly mainstream).

I tried uninstalling the Amazon Shopping app but a few rounds of Play Store updates and I find it back on my mobile.

Recently I have been asking Amazon to ship my stuff to their self serve retrieval kiosks. I had always been shipping to the basement floor of this bank two blocks away. Of course if the bank is closed I can't retrieve my package. Then I found one in the same building as my coworking space. The challenge is it is smaller so there isn't a panel to enter your pickup code. If you enable Bluetooth, device communications and kocation services of your Amazon Shopping app and you log in as you it will open the door to your package. I guess I am uninstalling and switching back to the other location since I don't feel like surrendering more of my privacy just to open a door.

Since I will soon surrender my iPhone, I needed something else to track my distance and steps. I didn’t know Google Fit could do it. Let’s see how it compares with the Apple Health I have been using for the past 5 years.

Why does Twitter keep profiling UFO sighting posts on my feed? I don't care about aliens. Shoot them down with a nuclear missile.

The Royal family algorithms I understand but UFOs?

You learning Swahili?

No, it's me. I took the easy way out. Italian.

I learnt French between age 8 and 14 and my post-secondary studies required me to learn and break down Latin and Greek words to their roots for two courses. Between those two, English, and all my time reading/viewing Italian recipes it is easier to pick up.

Very interesting. I wish you luck.

We’ve a family account for Duolingo for nearly three years now. It does add some fun to improving new language skills. I find it helps with vocab and grammar but doesn’t help with conversational skills at all. If you use it as your sole means to learn a new language it will suck, but if you use it as a study tool to supplement lessons it is pretty good.

I don't have anyone to talk to so the usefulness is correcting poor English subtitles or not having to look at subtitles when viewing videos or reading recipes.

I guess it would have been better if I started this three or four years ago at the company. They started breaking into English out of Italian during conference calls or meetings because of me. I'm also exposed to a lot of Brazilian Portuguese people.

Prior company to that it was German and Bavarian.

Does anyone here use Plex? It sounds like the Napster of movies while staying inside the law.

its basically just a front end entertainment center software for your home server.
With sharing.

A friend at work uses it and rips a lot of content. He added me to his library and suggest I use it on the plane because it isn’t blocked like the other big streaming services. When he showed me the movies he has access to, it was thousands - because he is sharing content with a big group of people.

I never buy content outright, so I’m trying to figure out the economy of buying and sharing a few films with a sharing syndicate over the usual streaming services.

I’m also still confused how Napster was illegal and this isn’t, but I guess it is because you aren’t copying someone else’s film - just watching it from their server. Plus the content isn’t shared across the internet, just within your sharing collective.

Doesn't someone have to be like Rambo and download the original movie? (or God forbid buy the digital copy)

And then the movie is streamed from some poor bastard's Internet? I know everyone has unlimited gigabit fibre these days (or not) but I never really feel charitable enough to act as Netflix lite for friends and family.

Were you part of the sneak preview with J Lo?

After 10+ years of converting my newspaper subscription to digital on Kindle I'm now having to find another format since Kindle is shuttering all its periodicals and papers. I kept the original e-reader as the "home" device but left the app on my iPad through the years as I lived and/or travelled to the States and Europe. Feels sad but I'll be happy to actually see the photographs for the newspaper articles now.
