The back should sit comfortably just OVER your hips, and given you’re skinny, well below your waist.
In the pics I’ve seen of you before, you tend to go a bit too low for my taste
 
I guess my question is: if I’m adding 2” to the front rise, do I automatically add 2” to the back rise?

Ciano, S&M, PC and other m2m outfits don’t normally ask for back rise, just front.

Whenever I go M2M I do a pretty high rise, but this time I’m going little extra (might look silly but I have no plans to ever tuck anything into them).

If I go OTR, it’s an always a trade-off between a decent rise versus a good straight leg (not skinny and not baggy). I’ve been wearing JCrew’s 770 straight leg jeans/‘5 pocket chinos’ for the last few years but the rise is def a bit low and after a few washes they are also too slim in the leg.
 
i think trousers are much less technical than jackets (I attended a trouser making course a few years ago and it all seemed pretty straightforward, I made a pair in 4-5 classes so it doesn’t require a 20yr apprenticeship).
My advise is find a local alterations tailor/seamstress that can copy garments, give them your favorite pair, tell them any adjustments you want, and run with if.
I’ve done this on several pairs, from tailor made to Filson’s, and it has always worked wonderfully. And if you can procure your cloth, shouldn’t run you more than a couple hundred bucks (ymmv).

Trousers (Pants to USAsians) rise get bandied around without much consistency these days. It used to be - in the good old days when I was cool - = the difference between the outside length measurement - i.e. top of waist band to end of leg and inseam - from crotch to end of leg. How it was adjusted is a 3 D tailoring issue. It can be adjusted by altering front panel or back panel or back rise or front rise. Back and front rise can be shown as a J x 2 (each with different shape /scoop) rather than a U.

The amount of material around bum from seam to seam can be shortened or lengthened. The height of back and or front can be lengthened or shortened. Thigh measurements can have an effect as well. Then this all - 4 seams - has to come together neatly underneath the crotch.

Most OTR Trouser rise descriptions these days are nonsense - what I would call low rise will be described as High rise and it is always only front rise - from under join/seam to top of waistband.

And don't get me going on flies. A men's fly should also be on a bit of a J curve and go Under the crotch to facilitate flopping one's HUGE member out to micturate. Women's flies don't have to accommodate this function and are only there to facilitate pulling on trousers and doing them up. These days to save $ I presume all manufacturers seem to use women's flies. These are short - finishing long before crotch. Thus presenting a hurdle/barrier over which one must flop the penis and as a result impeding flow and especially full evacuation at the end of the act.

I am bemused by the current fad for pleats - when in most cases they look like an affectation and serve no purpose except to emphasise child bearing hips.

I like pleats for continuing the crease line up into the top block, even if they aren’t terribly functional
 
Wouldn’t outseam = (front rise + backrise)/2 + inseam?

For example:

Front Rise: 13
Back Rise: 16.5
Inseam: 31
Outseam: 45.5ish

(Not an outseam of 43.25 )

No - it's, rise, 2 x different shaped and length J curves.
 
Do kids still buy used denim for the sick fadez or is that not a thing anymore? Wondering if I should try to recoup some money on old jeans that don’t work for me anymore or just put them away to give to my son in a few years (with a certainty that he will just say ‘ewww, gross!’

Who makes a good needlecord 5 pocket with a straight leg and generous rise? Something like the classic Levi’s in barley corn, but better quality than their current shite.

I couldn’t quite find anything fitting the bill, based on some interweb browsing. So for $25 shipped and an inseam that doesn’t need changing, I’ll start with the Levi’s while I keep looking

TL;dr: cargo pants and an ocbd in the office - too hipster?

Returning to the office five days a week like the rest of the country, I’ve realized I have plenty of dress trousers and shirts for meetings. But I could probably use a few new pairs of machine washable chinos for those days I’m just sitting in my office. I’m already the boss, so there is no one here to impress.

Anyway, they all look so boring. So I starting thinking about getting a few pairs of cargo pants instead. Something I’ve never gotten into before. But is it too much of a hipster millennial thing?

The last 2 pairs of strides are like my Stan Ray I have an off-white pair, an olive/green pair and a black pair. I don't go for cargos much, altho I wear Uniqlo Cargos around the house and garden.

Don't like that cuffed above ankles look at all.

Uncuffed and one decent break at front, long but no break at back.

What brand are those?
 
I guess the OGs could work at a pinch if you’re desperate for something set apart from chinos but why is everyone trying to hyper casualize everything? If you must go that route just cut to the chase and get sweat pants and crocs. Are chinos that hard to wear? They’re available in every kind of fit in every colour of the rainbow. I detest cargo pants. What are you carrying that you need extra pockets for?
So if you must - check out the OGs but CPs get a ‘two thumbs down’ from me, especially for white collar office work.
